2010 August | Before Bigs

I was on Pigeons and Planes the other day and came across Joshua Bennett who will probably be known more for other things he has done besides make great music. The UPenn graduate has performed his poetry at the White House where he received a standing ovation from President Obama and 200 other guests in attendance. He has also published his own book Jesus Riding Shotgun and plans on pursuing a PhD at Princeton University.

Though he will likely go down in history for the things he has done outside the studio, his music shows signs of success in the near future. Check out his most recent single “Don’t Let Me Go” featuring AmJay and listen to him performing his poetry at the White House by clicking on his name above!

new Curren$y – “A Movie” x “4 Hours & 20 Minutes”

New Orleans rapper Curren$y released a couple of songs recently, “4 Hours & 20 Minutes” featuring Killa Kyleon and “A Movie” featuring Mr. Marcelo. Never heard of the artists featured on the tracks but I know Curren$y from a mixtape he did with Wiz Khalifa back in 2009.

Curren$y is an up-and-coming artist and was featured in XXL’s “Freshmen Class of ’09″ for rappers that are going to break out; a list that included Kid Cudi, B.o.B., Asher Roth but also Charles Hamilton.

Prospect of the Week: Pill

Rapper Pill is our Prospect of the Week as he hails from Atlanta and has gained praise from Andre 300, XXL Magazine and worked with acclaimed DJ Drama on a project. Pill has released three mixtapes (4180: The Prescription (2009), 4075: The Refill (2009) and 1140: The Overdose (2010)) to date.

Pill is signed by Asylum and Warner Bros. Records; in June he was featured on the cover of XXL’s “Freshmen 10″ lineup along rappers Big Sean, Donnis, J. Cole and Wiz Khalifa.

Pill’s debut album, The Medicine will be released after his EP “The Diagnosis” comes out. Once Pill’s EP and debut album release, this rapper is going to break out.

Meet The Incomparable Shakespeare, if you don’t know, he’s from Brooklyn as he mentions in the song above featuring Adele, “Hometown”. Above is the official music video to his single off his latest mixtape, The British Invasion. Currently The Incomparable Shakespeare is working on an entire album with singer-songwriter Jon Solo.

Shakespeare’s influences range from alternative to emo to folk even though he is a rapper. I like his music because most of his songs build up along with a different beat than most rappers. He’s an intriguing rapper and below I have included “Hometown” and “On A Lonely Start”, a sneak preview to their forthcoming album.

Concert Review: Jimmy Cliff at Reggae Fest 8/14/10

This is kind of late but on Saturday August 14, I went to see the horse races at Del Mar Race Track and was fortunate enough to see Jimmy Cliff perform after the races for the Reggae Fest they held that night at the Fairgrounds. I recorded the video above, I know not the best quality, that’s why I put another video below that gives you a better idea of Jimmy Cliff.

Jimmy Cliff is currently the only living musician to receive the Order of Merit, the highest honor granted by the Jamaican government for achievement in the arts and sciences, and Cliff was one of five inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.

He performed all of his classic songs including “I Can See Clearly Now”, “The Harder They Come” and “You Can Get It If You Really Want” as well as some of his other hits. I enjoyed most of his music very that day and filmed most of his songs but uploaded my favorite by him.

Tijon “Use Me” – official music video

I have been talking to Tijon for the last week and he sent me his official music video for “Use Me” a remix to Bill Withers’ classic, “Use Me”. I think the song is fairly good and Tijon has the potential to carve a niche for himself if he can mix up the songs a bit more and produce more original stuff.
