Hidden Gem: Mister Heavenly *Michael Cera plays bass!

January 29th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Rock |

Mister Heavenly is a indie rock super group that opened for Passion Pit in December 2010 and are a band you should know about. I’m not only introducing you to this band because Michael Cera is a temporary bass player for them but they released two songs officially and they’re free!

Mister Heavenly consists of Honus Honus from Man Man, Nick Thorburn from Islands and Joe Plummer from Modest Mouse. They are considered “doo whoppers” and have a cool, indie rock sound. Below listen and download (PC: right-click; Mac: control-click) “Pineapple Girl” and “Mister Heavenly”.

All of the Lights orchestra cover + Sampled Saturday

January 29th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, Remix, Sampled Saturday |

I talk about this all the time in posts where an artist samples another’s music: most of the time I love it, especially when the artist shows originality like Hoodie Allen and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis being two most recent examples.

Below are 4 songs that sample some dope songs, making for some dope instrumentals, good vocals and overall pretty catchy jams.

Blue Scholars – Big Bank Hank (Bibio sample)
Olu – Jetpack Shit (feat Colbie Caillat) (Colbie Caillat sample)
Professor Green – I Need You Tonight (INXS sample)
Bugus – Fly Away (Benny Benassi sample)

*To download – PC: Right-click song / Mac: Control-click song*

What’s your favorite of the above songs? Let us know on our twitter, facebook, comment or the shoutbox on the right.

XV – SmallVille X H.A.M. (freestyle)

January 28th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

The kid with the green backpack, XV, recently dropped a song produced by J. Cole which samples Smashing Pumpkins. “SmallVille” has a nice relaxing beat to it and the sample only makes it better. Great production, great lyricism, great song.

SmallVille (produced By J. Cole)

Next XV song is “H.A.M.” and is the hit single from the Jay-Z/Kanye West collaboration off their upcoming album, Watch The Throne, coming out summer 2011. XV handles the track nicely and of all up-and-coming rappers to take on a big song, XV has the skills to do it well.

Black Eyed Peas remix & 2 mashups

January 28th, 2011 by | Dance, Mashup, Pop, Remix |

It’s Friday night, it’s time to go out and have some fun. But before you hit the town, show your friends you got three dope songs to party to: one is a remix by Zedd to BEP’s “The Time” and the other two are mashups.

Black Eyed Peas – The Time (Zedd Remix)

First mashup is Black Eyed Peas vs Blur, a rocking party mashup by DJ’s from Mars. DJ’s from Mars mixes it up nicely and brings in some electronica into it, making it even better.

Black Eyed Peas vs Blur – Boom Boom Two

Next mashup is Black Eyed Peas vs Daft Punk by DJ DiBella. Not sure if I like the original more, but I like how DJ DiBella mixed it up so it’s not just vocals over instrumentals.

Kyle Lucas x MGK, Mat Musto x Nate Walka – Over Being Sober

January 28th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video, Pop |

It’s really cool Nate Walka, Mat Musto, Kyle Lucas (MC of Vonnegutt) and Machine Gun Kelly all collaborated on this track because it’s dope and really shows their talent.  Plus I’m sure they got some good money from Ciroc for the promotional material they pushed in the music video.

Anybody catch Machine Gun Kelly say “Mazel Tov all night when it ain’t nothing but it’s Kosher”… love it!

Download “Over Being Sober”

Bonus: Kyle Lucas recently put out an awesome freestyle. “The Funeral Freestyle” further shows why Kyle Lucas will have a successful career not only individually but with his hip-pop band Vonnegutt. By the way, Big Boi agrees as he signed Vonnegutt to his Purple Ribbon record label.

“So rest in peace / I just murdered this beat” What a dope ending to a dope song.

Download “The Funeral Freestyle”, which is off his latest mixtape, It’s Always Sunny in Marietta (Download).

Sam Adams – “Coming Home” (remix)

January 28th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix |

Sam Adams remixes Diddy’s “Coming Home” by adding in some great rapping and awesome lyrics. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too big on Sam Adams when I first heard his music, but in the last year he has really stepped his Sh*t up and this song helps better prove that. He’s making the college white rapper more mainstream with many others joining him. I also love how much pride he has in his city when he continually raps on the hook “I’m coming, I’m coming home, Boston’s own you know I’m coming home”. I like this track a lot and I hope you do as well. Enjoy!

Hidden Gem: Phil Ade *Miss Temptation x Break Me Off

January 28th, 2011 by | Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap |

I have had mixed feelings about Phil Ade’s music. Some songs I really like and other’s I don’t care for too much. Recently the DMV-area MC put out a couple dope tracks that really show his potential, plus the production behind it is great.

“Miss Temptation” is produced by Sunny Norway has a more chill feel, vocals kind of remind me of Kanye West, especially what Phil Ade does on the hook.

Phil Ade – Miss Temptation Prod. by (Sunny Norway)

“Break Me Off” is produced by BrandUn Deshay, who is like Big K.R.I.T. in that he’s a good rapper and a great producer. Love the instrumentals and the rapping on this.

Phil Ade – Break Me Off (Prod. By BrandUn Deshay)

Check out Phil’s last mixtape, The Letterman (Download), which was mixed by Don Cannon. Here’s my favorite track off it.

e-dubble – Robots Can’t Drink (ff #53 – final freestyle friday)

January 28th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix |

Freestyle Friday number 53, the final one in a year-long saga from e-dubble of making some dope music and releasing it for free each Friday. I can’t believe an artist can release good quality music every week for a year straight, and he did it all for free!

In e-dubble’s final freestyle friday he samples a song of his from his album, Hip-Hop is Good, “Drinking With My Headphones On” but in the song he mentions it’s a bit of a mashup because he uses some of the vocals from another song off the album, “Robot Pop Songs“. Without further ado, e-dubble’s final (and longest) freestyle friday, “Robots Can’t Drink”.
e-dubble – Robots Can’t Drink
HOWEVER, e-dubble is going to continue to release free music with his upcoming mixtape, Written Thursdays, dropping in February. For all e-dubble freestyle friday, click here and for all our posts on e-dubble, click here.
