Kyle Lucas (of Vonnegutt) – “”New New New (New New)”

February 28th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix |

kyletop Kyle Lucas (of Vonnegutt) New New New (New New)Kyle Lucas of the hip-hop trio Vonnegutt has just dropped a remix he made to Kid Cudi’s “New New New (New New)”. Though this song is a bit outdated, he does a great job of freestyling with great flow over a hard beat. Kyle Lucas and Vonnegutt have a lot of things they are working on which we will hear of soon. They will be on the Vans Warped Tour this summer. In the meantime, enjoy this remix!

upcoming R&B update *August, Bluey Robinson, Cameron Bedell, Superlative

February 28th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B |

1198180856 1 upcoming R&B update *August, Bluey Robinson, Cameron Bedell, SuperlativeI googled R&B smooth and the above picture is what I got.

I want to say sorry because a few of these songs are a bit old. Below are four R&B songs from some up-and-coming R&B/Hip-Hop artists. I hope that all these artists make it mainstream because the songs below are so chill, smooth or overall just really catchy.

August made the track below for Usher. His vocals aren’t too bad (somebody sign him), the lyrics aren’t the best but the instrumentals are solid and overall good production from August. Very catchy R&B!
August – Throne (Usher Demo)
This Bluey Robinson is pretty old (2009) but I only heard it about a month ago when my friend Matt posted it on facebook. It’s such a smooth R&B jam, catchy hook, and overall a great song to get your groove on.
Bluey Robinson – Showgirl
This song came out in Fall 2010 and I forgot to post it. Cameron Bedell and Donnie Chauncey hook up to create this love ballad, I strongly considered to use in MJF’s “My Blogger’s Valentine” mixtape but it was a little too love song for me. However everything about this song screams catchy. I can easily see this song on the radio.
Cameron Bedell – Chasing Your Love ft. Donnie Chauncey
Lastly, the most recent song comes from a group of artists known as Superlative. This is their first song “Prototype”, which was submitted to me a couple weeks ago. It’s a chill song with an interesting beat, and I look forward to Superlative first project coming out later this Spring.

DJ Mashups – DJ Bahler, DJ Phresh, DJ Ryno and DJ Invisiboy

February 28th, 2011 by | Dance, Mashup, Mashup Monday, Remix |

Four mashups from four mashups artists who have DJ in their name. First mashup is by one of my favorite mashup artists, DJ Bahler, who really knows how to make the most out of a song he is using in a mashup. He uses Tyler The Creator vocals and instrumentals with Gold Panda and Caribou in his latest mashup “Cellar Door” (song above). Download because DJ Bahler had the guts to use Tyler the Creator. Download “Cellar Door”

DJ PHRESH does more of a remix than a mashup when he uses upcoming hip-hop duo Dean & Ravo’s catchy song “Walkin’ Around” vs Capone. Not really sure who Capone is but I’m sure DJ Phresh used some of his vocals with Dean & Ravo. Solid electro instrumentals but I’m more a fan of the Dean & Ravo vocals.

I like DJ Ryno because he uses several songs pretty well and you can easily point out the songs he uses. However easily identifying the vocals and instrumentals also means the transitions are a bit slow but overall DJ Ryno is solid and if you like the mashup below, then you can download his last mashup mixtape, Nocturnal Concepts.
Next to Last by DJ RYNO
DJ Invisiboy recently reached out to us and at first I didn’t like the mashups because it’s music ADD overload with how crazy some of his mashups are. However “Rawnald Where You At” is my favorite featuring Lil Wayne vocals overal Starf*cker‘s insanely catchy indie rock instrumentals which Invisiboy sped up.

(music video) Childish Gambino – Freaks And Geeks

February 28th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

It’s music video Monday and today we got Childish Gambino‘s latest video for “Freaks and Geeks”, the second song released off his upcoming 5-song EP. The video is him rapping in a warehouse, basically showing people he’s not only a funny writer/actor but also a really good lyricist whose rapping is for real. Download “Freaks and Geeks”.

(too big for) Hidden Gem: Chase & Status

February 27th, 2011 by | Dance, Electropop, Pop |

chasestatus1 (too big for) Hidden Gem: Chase & StatusChase & Status are an electro duo who hail from London, UK. It consists of Saul “Chase” Milton and Will “Status” Kennard. The duo have a very unique electronic/pop sound to their music and have quite catchy tracks. They have actually been quite popular in England for a while and currently have over 3,000 fans on their facebook page. They are just now starting to become mainstream. I actually just heard them on XM radio the other day. Their first album, More Than Alot, debuted in the UK album charts at number 49 on October 19, 2008. Since then they have been up to a lot with tours all over England and many other parts of Europe. They just released their second album, No More Idols, on January 31st and it’s a good one. Expect a lot from this electro duo in the near future. In the meantime, enjoy two of my favorite tracks by them “Streetlife” (featuring Takura) and “End Credits” (featuring Plan B).

Hip-Hop remixes *Zion I, Andre 3000, Gilbere Forte’, Intuition

February 27th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, R&B, Remix |

Above is a 4-minute beat-box of some of the best rap songs through music history. It’s pretty clever and overall really cool figuring out which songs he’s beat-boxing in the video.

Below are 4 hip-hop artists that rap on a track to improve the original, especially in the Ke$ha song in which I’m puking on the inside a little bit for posting.

First rapper & producer Intuition jumps on indie/electro duo Phantogram, who I’m very fond of. Wasn’t the biggest Intuition fan until I heard him add some hip-hop to “When I’m Small”, now I want to hear more.
Phantogram – When I’m Small (Remix feat. Intuition)
Outkast was amazing, but individually Andre 3000 and Big Boi are still great artists. Andre 3000 jumps on the Ke$ha track “Sleazy”. Perfect song title, the drum instrumental is hot and overall Andre 3000 kills it.
Ke$ha – Sleazy (Remix) (feat. Andre 3000)
For a more relaxed jam than the three above, Zion I jumps on Rebelution’s “Safe & Sound”. I think the original reggae/dub song is solid but then bay-area hip-hop group Zion I jumps on the verses and a little on remixing the production, which makes it so much better.
Rebelution – Safe & Sound (Zion I Remix)
Lastly for an even more relaxed jam, Gilbere Forte‘ jumps on Miguel’s R&B single, “Hard Way”. It’s a very chill track, didn’t like the original but with talented MC (and XXL Freshmen 2011 snub) Gilbere Forte’ I suddenly enjoy this song a lot more.

Hidden Gem: Smokey Robotic *electronic pop hop

February 27th, 2011 by | Electropop, Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap |

Watch the music video above for “Forever My Love” (DOWNLOAD) and I think you will agree Smokey Robotic is a pretty cool music group. Their music mixes genre’s with mostly electronic synthed up instrumentals over a mix of pop, hip-hop and R&B. Overall they are a funky band and they have become one of my favorites where I can’t wait til they release new music.

Below are two of my favorites from the New York/Vancouver genre-blending music group. I say genre-blending because it would be an injustice to stick them into a genre when their music is so diverse.
Smokey Robotic – Voices (newest song)
Smokey Robotic – Outside the Lines (Uptown)

Relax under the covers – The Kickdrums, Mike Posner, PJ Simas & Yeasayer

February 27th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, Rock |

Above is a mashup/cover by produced by PJ Simas and performed by him on the instrumentals and rapping and Jorden Corey with the vocals. In the song they specifically focus on Skylar Grey’s part from “Coming Home” by Diddy Dirty Money and her feature in “I Need A Doctor” by Dr. Dre and Eminem. Download “Coming Home x I Need A Doctor” (cover).

Below are three other really good songs that are covers.

First is The Kickdrum’s cover of Nirvana’s song “Love Buzz”, big fan of the instrumentals and the vocals go along really well.
The Kickdrums – Love Buzz (Nirvana Cover)
Recently Mike Posner did a cover of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep”. Before you dismiss Posner for what turned out to be a flop of a debut album save for a few pop hits, Posner returns to his awesome production roots for a relaxed pop cover.
Mike Posner – Rolling In The Deep (Adele Cover)
Lastly Yeasayer covers Seal’s “Crazy”. Seal is a great artist and while I don’t think the Yeasayer cover is better than the original, it provides a alternative/folk perspective of one of the best Seal songs.

February 25th, 2011 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Hip-Hop/Rap |

The Drive in 600x600 The Drive in Mixtape is Finally Here!It has arrived! The Drive-in mixtape by The Dean’s List is now available in it’s entirety for your pleasure. I have been really looking forward to this mixtape ever since I got a preview of it in early January. I have been listening to their music since they dropped Undeclared last year and I am very happy with the results of The Drive-in. They have really taken their music to the next level with this one. Watch out because The Dean’s List is blowing up. I hope all of you, wherever you may be, now know how truly musically talented Sonny Shotz, DJ Mendoza, and Mik Beats are (if you didn’t already know). This is with out a doubt the best mixtape of 2011 so far. It will be tough to compete with this one. My favorite songs from the mixtape are “All Systems Go” featuring OnCue, “Light Up The Sky” featuring Dani Umm, and “Dear Professor”.  Enjoy!
