Asher Roth is one of the few white rappers I have respect for. My cousin Kev turned me on to him in Spring 2009 when “I Love College” and I immediately became a fan. Rather than continue to put out catchy hip-hop songs since his release of his debut album (which is pretty good), he has taken a more alternative/indie direction with the hip-hop he’s making, not trying to force hits on us like Sam Adams or Chris Webby.
As the first true white college rapper, Asher Roth has graduated to another level and I look forward to the music he puts out because I know he won’t sell out to pop beats and getting pop artists featured in his music just to make a quick buck. Asher Roth is an artist that will be in the industry for a while and even if he doesn’t put out another over-played single like “I Love College” he’s still one of my favorites for staying true to his craft and not being a so-called “sell out” in my eyes.
Here’s “More Cowbell” and “Back Home”. “More Cowbell” actually samples a cowbell with a hilarious SNL soundbite opening the song; love the instrumentals, flow is fire. Then another chill hip-hop song with interesting instrumentals plus Roth & Chip Tha Ripper killing it on the drum beat and old school sample.
