Review: King Fantastic, Gilbere Forte, The ’87 Stick Up Kids at Little Temple

June 28th, 2011 by | Concert/Festival Review, Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap, Reviews |

276828 216055125099839 2760175 n Review: King Fantastic, Gilbere Forte, The 87 Stick Up Kids at Little TempleTalk about an excellent underrated music lineup on a Monday night. Little Temple bar in Los Angeles gathered several artists to form a dope show last night that started with retro-futuristic electronic hip-hop duo King Fantastic, followed by electronic hip-hop group The ’87 Stick Up Kids, then east-coast rapper Gilbere Forte followed by electronic/hip-hop/pop-punk group, Ninjasonik, who I didn’t get to see because the show started a bit late but who I heard were awesome. Here’s my show review.

Got there a bit early around 10:30 because I figured when King Fantastic told me their set was starting at 11:30, maybe a couple other acts would be opening for them. In fact, King Fantastic was the opener and was a great one. They pumped the crowd up with their electronic hip-hop songs Finger Snaps and Gun Claps while also playing their “Bass Head” remix from Bassnectar. Overall I loved just about every minute of it and really appreciated the fact Killer Reece One brought out his partner from Bleu Collar to do a song they made back in the day.

If King Fantastic is coming to your town, I highly recommend you see them. They had the most fans there and were excellent openers to a fun-filled night. Here’s my favorite that we haven’t blogged about yet.
Bassnectar – Bass Head (King Fantastic Remix)
Next came The ’87 Stick Up Kids who I knew a few songs from but didn’t have a ton of expectations and knew nothing about the group except what they sounded like. Overall they were the most upbeat group but my least favorite music which doesn’t mean so much as I liked almost all the songs I heard at this show. Rather than talk about them too much, here’s my three favorites from this catchy electronic/hip-hop party crew The ’87 Stick Up Kids.
The ’87 Stick Up Kids – Jack Donaghy
Lastly I saw Gilbere Forte, who the crowd didn’t seem to know much of but who I kept telling my friends, “this guy is going to be an XXL 2012 Freshmen”. Seriously, he has loads of talent, some of his songs I really liked while others were just decent. Overall he did well, although most of the crowd had either gone outside while waiting for the headliner or had left. Still, Forte showed talent and I look forward to more from the rapper. My favorite song Forte performed was “Blacking Out” which isn’t actually his song, so here’s a favorite of mine that I wish he performed.

Hidden Gem: Lazerbeak *Alternative Electronic/Hip-Hop

June 28th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Dance, Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap |

lazerbeak 600x450 Hidden Gem: Lazerbeak *Alternative Electronic/Hip HopLazerbeak is the super producer of Doomtree with production behind Sims Bad Time Zoo and his own album, (Legend Recognize Legend) among his recent work. He is also dope live which you can read more about below.

I saw Lazerbeak perform with Dessa and Sims of Doomtree in early May and was super impressed by Lazerbeak‘s 10-minute DJ set where he “dropped bombs” on the crowd then introduced Sims for a dope hip-hop set which featured some dope rhymes. However I was more impressed by the dope production from Lazerbeak who brings a ton of energy on stage even if he isn’t front and center.

Here’s my three favorites from Lazerbeak, which are off his last album, Legend Recognize Legend.
Lazerbeak – Dream Team
Lazerbeak – Let It Go
Lazerbeak – Wild Life
If you like those Lazerbeak songs, check him out on facebook and twitter.

Chiddy Bang – “Mind Your Manners”

June 28th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix |

mwfrL Chiddy Bang Mind Your MannersA new release from Chiddy Bang surfaced earlier today called “Mind Your Manners”. Personally, in my opinion, it’s not their best work but it is still a solid track. I do like how they continue to crunch out new tracks each week. Although, I would love to hear more original work by them. Anyway, enjoy!

The Dean’s List – “All My Troubles”

June 28th, 2011 by | Dance, Dubstep, Electronic Tuesday, Hip-Hop/Rap |

deanslist 8 The Deans List All My TroublesBoston’s own The Dean’s List is at it yet again releasing another awesome new track called “All My Troubles”. This is a true party track with a lot of electronic and dubstep influenced beats. There is not much rapping in it but when there is Sonny Shotz kills it as usual. This group can do it all, arranging their style and uniqueness of sound in many different ways. This group is going to get big by the end of this year and I expect everyone to job on their bandwagon. Enjoy!

Dom Kennedy – New Jeeps (Ft. Asher Roth and Mikey Rocks)

June 28th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

Dom Kennedy New Jeeps (Ft. Asher Roth and Mikey Rocks)Dom Kennedy is seriously one of the most underrated, under-appreciated rappers in the game. He just dropped his album, II: From the Westside with Love, under the shadows of Big Sean and Curren$y, and it’s seriously a nugget that not enough people know about. Dom Kennedy may be the next big thing out of the west coast. Check out “New Jeeps” featuring Asher Roth and Mikey Rocks of the Cool Kids. It’s a must listen and has the perfect summertime vibe.

Follow Mr. Kennedy on Twitter, and if you’re really feeling it, buy the album of itunes.

Hidden Gem: The Bynars *Boston Synth-Pop

June 27th, 2011 by | Hidden Gem, Pop, synthpop |

20110413 155410 996274 Hidden Gem: The Bynars *Boston Synth PopThe Bynars reached out to us in Mid-May, I listened to their stuff within a couple weeks later and decided I would do a blog post because of their catchy sound. Although The Bynars can be categorized as synth-pop, the Boston band has some grooving rock elements which shouldn’t turn you off to their music if you don’t like pop.

In their e-mail to us they attached their last three singles off their self-titled album. I really like all the songs they have sent me so here are their last three singles. Check out their full album on bandcamp.
The Bynars – Can You Hear It
The Bynars – How Does It Feel to Be in Love
The Bynars – Asking Your Mom for Money

If you like The Bynars music, follow them on facebook and twitter.
