Avicii blows away crowd in Bloomington

November 10th, 2011 by | Concert/Festival Review, House, Reviews |

It’s Halloween weekend and your options for music in Bloomington,IN (Home of the Indiana Hoosiers) are go to the Bluebird, Jake’s bar, or go see Avicii in the middle of a farm 20 minutes away from B-Town. Many students obviously chose to see the rising star for electronic house music at Bounce Music Festival. Avicii aka Tim Bergling has sky rocketed from No. 39 (2010) to No. 6 (2011) in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ’s. The Swedish DJ has passed the people he grew up idolizing like Swedish House Mafia guys and Eric Prydz. Avicii started up in 2008 with a single “Lazy Lace” and now his songs “Levels” and “Fade into Darkness” are top 10. The main reason for his growth has been touring around the world. From Europe to America to Asia, Avicii has crossed continents to perform at some major festivals like Ultra Music Festival in Miami and major nightclubs like Space in Ibiza, Spain.

Avicii’s first time in Bloomington was incredible. It was my first time I got to see him and he exceeded my expectations. Artesse (upcoming DJ and UPenn student) opened for Avicii with remixes of “Paradise” by Coldplay and “Wonderwall” by Oasis. Once Artesse was done, Avicii came on stage just as the sun was setting. He opened with “Fade into Darkness”, one of my favorites to get the crowd into it. Once the sun went down, the epic light show began with lasers shooting out across the crowd, strobe lights, and multi-colored lights to synchronize with the music. Avicii played a “Coming Home” remix, which was the first time I heard a remix of the song and it sounded awesome. The only way he could finish the set was with one of his most popular songs, “Levels”. Once the set was over and the crowd left, Avicii ran off stage and took a flight to his next performance that same night at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ. It seems like with a “work hard” mentality, performing at major venues, and coming out with the hottest electronic house music, Avicii will be a top 5 DJ in the world in no time.

Here’s my two favorite originals from Avicii, “Fade Into Darkness” and “Levels”.
