The Verbal Surgeon is coming out of Western Massachusetts and brings us the old school feel that we really dig. He started writing music when he was just 15 years old, writing everything on his Sidekick ID. He currently resides in Rochester, New York, working on two projects; one will be solo project that will drop this Spring/Summer, and the other will be with his dude Tugboat. Here’s “What’s Love”.
Check out my Q&A with him below, guaranteed you’ll love his flow.
Q: BeforeBigs- Who are your musical influeneces?
A: The Verbal Surgeon- I really got into rapping listening to Vinny Paz. I grew up on that old 90′s vibe though so I naturally have a love for all the greats: Nas, Mobb, Pun, Big L, Raekwon, Ghostface, etc.
Q: BeforeBigs- what is the craziest thing that has ever happened at a concert of yours?
A: The Verbal Surgeon- ha I was doing a house show this one time and this vanilla scoop just came up and started grinding on me while I’m rapping. It came out of left field. I saw her scoping me out all night and then she just hopped on my shit! I have a video of it on youtube haha. I took her in the bathroom and shit, she had nice buns.
Q: BeforeBigs- Who are some artists you’d like to work with?
A: The Verbal Surgeon- There’s a lot of artists I’d love to work with. If given the opportunity I would probably venture out of the hip hop genre of artists, I’d love to work with Emily Haines. She’s one of my biggest influences right now. I’d love to kick it with An Horse too, they make great tracks.
Q: BeforeBigs- For somebody that’s never heard your music before, how would you describe it?
A: The Verbal Surgeon- Versatile. When I first dropped Annotations of a Surgeon I remember I handed out a copy to one of my teachers in High School and I told him even if he doesn’t like Hip Hop, out of the 26 tracks he’ll find one he likes.
Q: BeforeBigs- did he find one that he liked?
A: The Verbal Surgeon- I honestly don’t know haha, I just wanted to push my shit out there
Q: BeforeBigs- Any future plans?
A: The Verbal Surgeon- Big plans, after this mixtape drop dedicating all my focus on getting my first self produced album out
Q: BeforeBigs- why did you start writing music?
A: The Verbal Surgeon- I was never into drugs or drinking that much when I was younger. I tried smoking and shit when I was like 12 and it didn’t appeal to me. All through middle school and highschool I never was into the same scene as kids were, I’d rather write music instead of drink and shit.
Q: BeforeBigs- that’s all I’ve got for you now, anything else you’d like to tell us?
A: The Verbal Surgeon- Yeah, eat your vegetables. And if you’re trying to be a “rapper” don’t just listen to “rap” expand your horizons and branch out.
Here’s all the new tracks The Verbal Surgeon has released in the Spring.
