Review: Crystal Fighters at The Fonda Theatre

MG 9406 as Smart Object 1 665x452 600x407 Review: Crystal Fighters at The Fonda TheatreLast Thursday, courtesy of Groundsounds I had the pleasure of seeing UK alternative dance rock band Crystal Fighters at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. It was an excellent show as Crystal Fighters proved to have lots of energy, engaging the audience with clapping, dancing and many fun moments to sing along.

I highly recommend seeing this band as they know how to get the crowd dancing and there were quite a few cute hippies in the audience to mingle with if you go see Crystal Fighters. This band won’t produce fans that fold their arms when watching them, but produce much dancing, singing along and attractive hippy chicks. Although there were many songs I heard that I didn’t know before the show, I still enjoyed most of them very much but especially loved “Plage”, “You & I” and “LA Calling”. I also really liked that when it felt like Crystal Fighters was done performing like after they performed “Plage”, they came back and performed even more, it was a never-ending dance party! Enjoy those three tracks below.

Review: The Dustbowl Revival at The Mint *must-see band!

The Venice beach collective plays a variety of music from old school country honkey tonk to indie rock to catchy pop. There’s nothing Dustbowl Revival can’t play and they seem to always prepare a different set for each performance they do bringing on various musicians as well. It was also the violinist’s birthday so there were many violin solo’s which you don’t see very often and was quite awesome. Read more below. (more…)

Hidden Gem: American Authors *the next Imagine Dragons?

October 25th, 2013 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Pop, Rock |

American Authors 600x400 Hidden Gem: American Authors *the next Imagine Dragons?A group less electronic and more upbeat than Imagine Dragons, the American Authors are about to become huge mainstream acts with alternative pop/rock hits “Believer” and “Best Day Of My Life”. They’ve gotten placements in various large-scale and nationwide commercials as they have this upbeat alternative pop/rock sound that will take them far. In fact, if I were Imagine Dragons I’d bring American Authors on tour with them worldwide as everybody will dig their positive vibes before Imagine Dragons set things off with their dramatic yet uplifting vibes in the alt pop/rock variety.

Anyways, follow American Authors they will be on mainstream radio sooner than you think! Stream American Authors EP and their cover to Lorde‘s “Royals”.

There’s no way you didn’t like what you heard above, so like American Authors on Facebook! I realize they might already be considered mainstream but it’s Friday and I want to spread the weekend love with positive vibe music.

Review: Armand Van Helden at Create Nightclub

1384154 10151901357046413 663077003 n 400x600 Review: Armand Van Helden at Create NightclubLast Saturday, a few buddies and I caught, Armand Van Helden, aka 1/2 of critically acclaimed DJ duo Duck Sauce, at Create Nightclub in Hollywood.  His DJ set went by super quick although it lasted for over two hours, which shows how entertaining of a set he performed, which was mostly disco and progressive house, lots of fun!

Anyways, I don’t remember a ton of what he spun, but when he performed 2009 Duck Sauce hit “Anyway” and the latest Duck Sauce single, 2013′s “It’s You”. Oh and also his 1996 classic, “The Funk Phenomena”; watch music video’s for those three songs below.

Hidden Gem: Andy Gruhin *emerging singer/songwriter

1276942 10151594713286090 1919444412 o 600x398 Hidden Gem: Andy Gruhin *emerging singer/songwriterPerfect for a lazy day, Andy Gruhin is the best up-and-coming artist for some easy listening music. He recently covered the worst song about “Chinese Food“. I actually heard his cover first before finally watching the Alison Gold “Chinese Food” song. After I heard Gruhin’s cover a couple times, I thought it would be so great to approach random strangers with lines from this song, or to fulfill my goal of picking up a chick using cheesy lyrics as pick-up lines.

A little about Andy Gruhin; he graduated in May at my alma mater Syracuse University, signed to Sony/ATV Music Publishing and recently released his new song, “Double Cross” on soundcloud. I think he has potential as a songwriter so keep an eye on him, especially when I remind you about the next top 40 single that gets written by him. Also look out for an announcement of a northeast US tour.

Either way, sit back, relax and enjoy in this comical cover of “Chinese Food” and then stream and download his original “Double Cross”.

If you like what you heard above, give Andy Gruhin a like on facebook.

Hidden Gem: Lancelot *Australian Nu-Disco/Dance

919832 649621955053526 762950066 o 600x395 Hidden Gem: Lancelot *Australian Nu Disco/DanceAbout a month ago on my way home from work, I put on Songza’s Indie Dance & Nu Disco playlist and about 3-5 songs in I hear Australian musician Lancelot‘s “Spoken Word” and immediately fall in love with his tunes. Within that same week I believe I heard another track, maybe “Higher Ground”, which I also dug a lot.

The dude has less than 5,000 Facebook fans, which will change when DJs more well-known than Goldroom and Le Crayon start remixing his tunes or when he starts remixing some mainstream music in Australia and worldwide. Either way, I hope he comes to LA soon, so I can impress my Nu-Disco music friends when I invite them to see Lancelot.

Below is my favorite, “Spoken Word”, his latest project, “Thinking Of You” EP and a 2-track Free EP as well.. I really love the handclaps or finger snaps with the piano to open the song plus I believe I hear children cheering in the background of the song, just lovely dance vibes especially when the guitar riff jumps in, so smooth!

Review: Culture Collide Festival (Miami Horror, Mystery Skulls, Gemini Club, Plastic Plates, Maya Vik, and Ghost Wave)

Review: Culture Collide Festival (Miami Horror, Mystery Skulls, Gemini Club, Plastic Plates, Maya Vik, and Ghost Wave)Late last week I caught Filter Magazine’s 4th Annual Culture Collide Festival. I went to days one and two of the three day festival and thoroughly enjoyed most of the acts I saw, although this years lineup didn’t have the same sexiness that previous lineups had, although Maya Vik is one sexy lead singer/guitarist! Read more below for reviews on the acts I enjoyed, which included: Maya VikGhost WavePlastic PlatesMiami Horror (DJ Set + live band), Gemini Club and Mystery Skulls.

I was going to write reviews of every band I saw but I didn’t enjoy every band and feel it’s better to not saying anything at all on them if I have nothing good to say.

Review: Houndmouth live at The Mint *alt folk up and comers

1292826 539325526141846 136346229 o 600x597 Review: Houndmouth live at The Mint *alt folk up and comersLast Wednesday, my brother and I caught Indiana folk rock band Houndmouth at The Mint in West Los Angeles. The Mint invited us out and knew I would love the harmonized vocals and positive energy that Houndmouth displayed throughout the set.

Although at times it felt like I heard songs more than once because some of their tunes sound similar, overall I felt encouraged to sing along to many of their tunes because the whole band was singing, which I loved. A quality show on a weeknight, if you happen to see Houndmouth on a lineup at an event, I highly recommend checking them out, especially if you dig folk music. As someone whose never been too much into folk, Houndmouth is one of my few exceptions as they have an upbeat vibe or at least understand that if everybody in the band sings along, their audience will be encouraged and enjoy to sing along with them, it’s fun.

Watch videos to “Penitentiary” and the single off their debut album, From The Hills Below The City (iTunes), “On The Road”.

Video: Basic Vacation I Believe *Breakout actA band that’s about to become huge is Basic Vacation, especially when their EP comes out next Tuesday (October 15)! The New York City/Philly indie rock band recently got signed to Capital Records, CAA is doing their booking and big things will be on the horizon for them!

Watch the new video to their single, “I Believe” which is a fun pop-rock anthem that will catapult this group to what I’m hoping for is a national tour starting in 2014.
