Tonight catch El-P, Warm Brew and Thurz at the Troubadour

Tonight it’s going down at The Troubadour with an underrated hip-hop show put together by Red Bull Sound Select. I’ve been to a few of their events before and it’s always a good time but tonight should be a solid hip-hop show with some interesting local acts.

LA-based hip-hop trio Warm Brew, talented rapper/producer Azizi Gibson, and insightful rapper Thurz, who has broken away from U-N-I to create compelling, poignant solo concept albums, will kick off the night. Renowned Brooklyn rapper and Definitive Jux founder El-P will headline.

The show is all ages and tickets are just $3 for those who RSVP at, with all proceeds going back to support the opening local bands.

Here’s some more info below on the artists performing, including a song and/or video I enjoy from them.
Yannick “Thurz” Koffi – formerly one half of renowned Los Angeles rap duo U-N-I – broke new ground on his remarkable solo album, L.A. Riots. Inspired by the violent aftermath of the Rodney King verdict, the album is a poignant collection of tunes that rely heavily on live instrumentation that eschews samples without sacrificing the boom bap.

Rapper/producer Azizi Gibson ran into Flying Lotus at his day job at Urban Outfitters soon after his move west, and he gave the renowned producer a copy of his demo. The next day, Flying Lotus suggested they meet for lunch, and following a handful of performances together, Lotus signed Gibson to his Brainfeeder label. Gibson’s latest project, Ghost in the Shell, features 19 polished tracks that combine his appetite for “densely layered, idiosyncratic beats with a smattering of futuristic g-funk,” according to the LA Weekly.

LA-based hip-hop trio Warm Brew met in high school and are creating smooth, honest, exciting hip-hop with an emphasis on the groove, the soul and the funk. They dubbed their latest album Ride because it’s just the beginning of the band’s epic journey together. They are currently in the studio working on the full-length follow-up to Ride.

Brooklyn rapper El-P, born Jaime Meline, has been a major driving force in alternative hip-hop for more than a decade, producing for several underground rappers and collaborating with renowned artists including Killer Mike and Mos Def. He co-founded independent record label Definitive Jux, which boasts an impressive roster of artists including Aespop Rock and Murs. El-P is known for combining an old-school aesthetic with an inclination to boldly push boundaries. Recently El-P collaborated with Killer Mike to form Run The Jewels, stream their entire self-titled debut album below.
