Maybe the best performance I’ve ever seen at The Roxy Theatre occurred last Saturday when I went to see Miniature Tigers perform at the classic West Hollywood venue. Read more of my review below.

Hidden Gem: Cousin Matt *chill electronic duo

March 31st, 2014 by | Alternative/Indie, Chill/Jam/Reggae, Electropop, Hidden Gem, synthpop |

I was going to post this yesterday when I was experiencing a very lazy Sunday and overall withdrawal from a long fun weekend but I got lazy, what a surprise. Anyway I’d like to introduce you to Cousin Matt, a brand new Brooklyn/Atlanta based duo that have twinkling production, seductive vocals and a dreamy feel that really caught my ear. They’ve only released three tracks and I just heard their latest “Soft Science” yesterday and immediately became a fan of this emerging music duo.

The cousins New York and Atlanta confluence is felt, with a style and sound that brings to mind D’angelo and Sufjan Stevens, and an attitude and approach not unlike early LCD Soundsystem.
Here’s the three songs they’ve released so far. My favorites are “Pelicans” and “Soft Science”.

Download: Gallant – Jupiter Grayscale *sensual glittery R&B soul

March 30th, 2014 by | Alternative/Indie, Pop, R&B |

Today is Lazy Sunday but I’ve decided to get out of bed and blog after lying down and listening to this track earlier today and realizing it’s sensual soulful joy with glittery beats from producer Maths Time Joy and vocal ecstasy from Gallant.

Hotly tipped LA artist Gallant has revealed a new track today in “Jupiter Greyscale”. Produced by Maths Time Joy and featured on Gallant’s upcoming debut EP Zebra, the track is a study in intricate beats from MTJ and the showstopping vocal of Gallant.

The artist has gained fans at Pitchfork, The Guardian, NME, Noisey and BBC Radio 1 with his chilling falsetto, beguiling many on tracks from his upcoming debut EP, Zebra.  Following If It Hurts, Manhattan and Forfeit is Jupiter Greyscale. Hooking up with hotly tipped UK producer Maths Time Joy, the track is a study in intricate beats and stunning vocals. With Zebra fast approaching, this track is yet another example of why Gallant is on the rise. Follow him on facebook for more on this emerging talent.

Video: The Griswolds – Mississippi (Magic Man Remix)

March 27th, 2014 by | Alternative/Indie, Electropop, Music Video, Remix, synthpop |

I’m a big fan of The Griswolds and their label, Wind-Up Records; also becoming a big fan of Magic Man who are just as talented remixing dope indie songs as they are making original indie electro synth pop jams. Well the two bands came together with Magic Man remixing “Mississippi” from The Griswolds. I still like the original more but this is a laid back remix that will get hipsters to unfold their arms and dance a little bit. Enjoy the video to “Mississippi” (Magic Man Remix) below. (more…)

Video: Miniature Tigers – Swimming Pool Blues *summer indie pop-rock fun!

March 27th, 2014 by | Music Video, Pop, Rock |

Miniature Tigers have just released the video for their new single “Swimming Pool Blues.” The pool-side sun-infused clip debuted on NYLON today, who said “Good to the last synth, this video is getting us seriously psyched for summer.”

The band is finishing up a headlining tour and will be playing at The Roxy Theatre in LA this Saturday.  Their much-anticipated new LP Cruel Runnings, is slated for release June 10 via YEBO Music.

It’s hard not to sing along to the chorus and when the lead singer keeps singing “yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah”, it’s so catchy and fun, I want summer now because of this song!

Video: Brett Dennen – When We Were Young

March 27th, 2014 by | Music Video |

I seriously think this song could get on the radio on more than just KCRW. What do you think? Here’s the latest video from singer/songwriter Brett Dennen, “When We Were Young” which is a fun upbeat track that groves. I love the chorus, the video is a bunch of Americans dancing and having fun and overall its a nice song. Enjoy the video below.

Review: The Wyld at Bardot’s It’s A School Night

March 26th, 2014 by | Alternative/Indie, Concert/Festival Review, Hip-Hop/Rap |

New Zealand alternative hip-hop trio The Wyld made their US performance debut with an intimate show at Bardot in Hollywood, California to a packed house. During the show, I spotted my friend and rapper @KoshaDillz and we were able to discuss the performance we were watching. To be honest, I hate to talk bad but I wasn’t impressed with The Wyld at all. This is a band I’ve been following since fall 2010 when they came onto the scene with “Revolution” and followed that up with “Full Circle” nearly a month later in late 2010. I became a huge fan and thought they had a ton of potential as they had this Kid Cudi with a Cage The Elephant vibe. They didn’t release anything for a while until fall 2013 with the release of Abstract EP, which really disappointed me as there was only 1 song from it, I’ve since continued to enjoy, “Wake Up” plus their new edit of “Revolution”.

Review: Das Tapes live at The Spare Room, Roosevelt Hotel

March 24th, 2014 by | Concert/Festival Review, Dance, Disco, Electropop, synthpop |

Last Thursday, The Burning Ear put together a fantastic free show with Los Angeles funky brother duo Das Tapes bringing their dance vibes to The Spare Room at The Roosevelt Hotel for Glenn Close’s birthday. It was a fun night and one of the best free shows I’ve been to since Das Tapes and the audience not only sang happy birthday to Glenn Close while she was bowling nearby the stage, but I met actor Michael Pena and told him how I enjoyed his movies, he said thanks and gave me a bro hug, it was awesome! Yet the best part of the evening was hearing Das Tapes perform their new jam, “Fetish” which is an absolute hit that sounds like a mix of ClassixxPoolsideToro Y Moi and Chromeo.

Stream and download the new track from Das Tapes below.
