Last Thursday I witnessed Isaac Rother & The Phantoms and Fool’s Gold live at The Echoplex as part of Red Bull Sound Select’s monthly LA concert series showcasing underrated bands. It was truly a great show with Isaac Rother & The Phantoms bringing a 60’s and 70’s psychedelic rock pop variety that was catchy and fun. (more…)
Last Saturday I worked the merchandise and food & beverage table at We Are The West‘s “The Underground Series” a monthly concert done in an underground parking garage on a Saturday night in Santa Monica, California that features We Are The West and a different opening act each month. It was my first time attending this intimate unusual concert and I absolutely loved it, not only making money selling popcorn and drinks to people but getting to enjoy some diverse music that is still hard to put into a single genre.
Both bands that performed, Morello and WE ARE THE WEST, have diverse sounds that have folk and Americana yet also have blues rock and pop stylings as well. The show started with lead singer Malcom Cross and Morello performing with lead singer Cross doing a couple songs on his own then the rest of the band jumping in to create something pop, folk, singer/songwriter and really all over the place composition wise. I’ll give you their most recent music video and tell you to check out their soundcloud for more. Also like them on Facebook if you dig Malcom Cross and Morello.
After Morello killed it with Cross’s voice to the instrumentation to them just jamming out with alternative pop vibes, then came We Are The West who are seriously experienced performers. My friend Tim works with the band and had been trying to get me to come to their show so I was honored when he asked if I wanted to make a few extra bucks to work merchandise and sell popcorn and drinks. I got to meet many of We Are The West‘s fans and the band who were really nice and appreciative of my help. However I was super appreciative of their music and the experience they provided us music fans as they were absolutely wonderful. It felt like going on an unusual road trip when they performed, that was almost never ending as each song was so diverse composition wise, the sound invoked different feelings and I highly recommend seeing this band live, they kick ass and are super wonderful people! So close your eyes and listen to their latest 3-song EP below. Also below that is their latest music video.
Last weekend I attended Echo Park Rising for a few hours and caught acts that were mostly forgettable except for Harriet Brown, an Asian male with a bowl cut who might be the 2nd coming of Prince! Here’s my review of the acts I saw below. (more…)
Last Thursday I caught Ben Browning, Bassist of Cut Copy, perform for free at Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, CA. It was a solid show and because I LOVE CUT COPY I had to see Ben Browning’s solo project. It’s not as dance-able as Cut Copy is but surprisingly real catchy electronic pop that’s worth a listen. Although I probably only caught 15 minutes of his set, I really enjoyed his energy and look forward to more from him although if it was Cut Copy, I would be the happiest person on earth seeing them for free again!
