Review: Freedom Fry live Good Times at Davey Waynes (Hollywood)

March 30th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Concert/Festival Review, Pop |

Last night I had the pleasure of catching one of my favorite emerging folk-pop bands, Freedom Fry at Hollywood bar Good Times At Davey Wayne’s. It’s not every Wednesday I get to catch a band that has such a laid back yet infectious vibe that is easy to cling to.

My favorites I heard them do live was the cover of Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” which was really cool and had a soft poppy vibe that was fun; also enjoyed their latest song release “Brave”, my favorite 2017 song release of theirs, “Awake” and one of my all-time favorites from this rising group, “Shaky Ground”. Miami Horror – “The Shapes” *artsy concept album

March 24th, 2017 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie, Electropop, New Wave, synthpop |

One of my favorite Australian bands is back with some great new music with their new concept album, The Shapes. After a two-year hiatus spent writing, experimenting and exploring, Melbourne’s Miami Horror return with their new conceptual project The Shapes.

The Shapes comes to life as a sonic / art experience and sees the band delve deep into rhythm and percussion with influences ranging from the art pop and lyrical wit of Talking Heads to Caribbean funk and African beats.  The first taste from The Shapes, “Leila” embodies the glitzy, glamorous sunshine of LA, draped in 80s synth melodies and topped with those iconic Miami Horror vocals, it’s a fitting first single.

Watch: Speelburg – “Pulse Of A Million” *alternative psychedelic pop

March 16th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Dance, Electronic Rock, Electropop, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Pop |

When I first heard this song, I thought it was weird yet grabbed me because of its upbeat nature and I like the alternative, almost psychedelic vibes with uplifting lyrical content. Speelburg is intriguing, cool, strange, awesome and exciting! I really want to hear more from them and catch Speelburg (real name Noah Sacré) live!

March 15th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Chill/Jam/Reggae, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Pop, Rock |

My favorite emerging band Magic Giant. Yes, my favorite emerging band who continues to climb higher and higher in the mainstream music scene and whose tours are lasting longer and longer have released a new video and I love it!

They were couch-crashing at a friend’s farm in upstate NY and woke up to this beautiful scene outside their window. It was so serene that it inspired this acoustic arrangement of Set on Fire which you should watch below.

Stream: Franc Moody – “Dopamine” *disco funk similar to Daft Punk

March 15th, 2017 by | Disco |

North West London collective Franc Moody announce their new single “Dopamine” following in the footsteps of their 2016 instrumental EP1. “Dopamine” takes this same lithe funk sensibility and adds a deft vocal and lyrical content that plays with the physical and emotional effects of the song. I love the funky basslines, the smooth melodies and the lyrical content keeps me into the song very much. I think Franc Moody is onto some low-fi dance music.

Introducing Shane Henry *rock blues infusion

March 15th, 2017 by | Hidden Gem, Rock |

Today I want to introduce you to acclaimed blues rock musician Shane Henry. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Henry has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments opening for such artists as BB King, Etta James, Buddy Guy, Edwin McCain and the Destroyers. His new album is produced in part by in part by David Ryan Harris (John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Santana) and Justin Glasco (The Lone Bellow). Henry’s music has been heard on NBC, CBS, Discovery Channel, Hallmark Channel, and the E! Television network.

Here’s his new single, “Save Me”, off his upcoming album, Light in the Dark (due for release April 28). According to the person who reached out with the song, the upcoming album “boasts songs that effectively reflect an upward gaze while offering hope and comfort in a world where challenges abound and confusion often reigns. A mix of the occasionally dark underbelly, some instantly accessible grooves, a host of ready refrains and fiery fretwork, it carries a persistently uplifting theme throughout.”

Stream “Save Me” below and be on the lookout for Shane Henry’s upcoming album. (more…)

Video: Winstons – “Without You” *soulful blues rock

March 10th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video, Rock |

Winstons is a garage-soul duo out of Virginia, residing in Brooklyn. They do love songs, blue songs, and dance songs with drums, guitar, harmonies, and a harmonica.

The lead singer sounds like the lead singer from Kings Of Leon with the soulful rock melodies of The Black Keys and Alabama Shakes. Their sound has drawn comparisons to Screaming’ Jay Hawkins and The Cramps. I really like what they are bringing in “Without You” and can’t wait to hear more, one of my new favorite bands!

Watch the video to “Without You” below.

Freedom Fry – Junkie *happy indie pop

March 10th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Pop |

“Junkie” is Freedom Fry‘s second single and third new song of the year. In their words, This is our indie pop ode to being in love and hopelessly addicted to someone. – Bruce & Marie.

It’s a fun indie pop song and every time I hear a new song from Freedom Fry, I can’t wait for what they are going to bring next. Stream “Junkie” below.

Stream: Tuxedo – “2nd Time Around” *disco/funk

March 8th, 2017 by | Disco, Electropop, Pop, R&B, synthpop |

I love the future disco/funk vibes of Tuxedo and I’m so excited to share the first release from their upcoming album Tuxedo II (pre-order) out March 24 through Stones Throw Records. “2nd Time Around” continues the impressive upbeat debut release Tuxedo dropped in 2015 and I can’t wait for this 2nd album as it will be wholly original yet still draw influence from the future funk wobble of Zapp, Gap, Jam/Lewis and Junie Morrison, while nodding lyrically to Mtume, Jodeci and Cameo.

Tuxedo is Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One. The crystallization of their 2nd album’s concept comes courtesy of its message of universal love; thanks to the signature combination of soul and pop sensibility that have come to define Mayer’s hook. I can’t wait to hear the full length, definitely buying this album when it drops!

Stream “2nd Time Around” below, watch them perform it live on Jimmy Kimmel Live and peep the upcoming tour dates, you do not want to miss this duo live! (more…)

Hidden Gem: Airpark *Groove-heavy rock/pop

March 6th, 2017 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie, Pop, Rock |

Nashville-based alternative rock/pop duo Airpark released their debut track “All The Time” and I was hooked on them. Inspired by minimalism, melody and groove-heavy percussion, bandmates Michael Ford, Jr. and Ben Ford launched the group in 2016, one year after their previous project The Apache Relay quietly called it quits.

Stream “All The Time” below. It’s off Airpark‘s first EP Early Works, Volume 1, out now via Eugenia Hall Records. In fact, stream the four-track EP, it’s pretty good!

Below find a bio on Airpark, links to follow them, and upcoming tour dates.
