Music Video: Tailor – Wolf *Dark Pop

September 4th, 2012 by | Music Video, Pop |

Hailing from Cape Town, Tailor releases her charming demons in her debut album, The Dark Horse. Having written half of the album on the spot in a single day, the album is a collection of moody and dramatic stories detailing her baggage and desires to escape. “Wolf” perfectly introduces Tailor’s sinister structure as she sings, “As the darkness fills my soul / The way that I don’t know / Everything you do is oh so-so.” Tailor channels Fiona Apple‘s aggressive melancholy in The Dark Horse – no surprise considering the album was mastered by Ted Jensen who’s list of credits includes Fiona Apple’s Tidal and Norah JonesCome Away With Me.

Although Tailor’s lyrical imagery is strong enough to not even need a video, “Wolf” is surreal and jerky, seducing with Michel Gondry-esque artistry.

QUALMS – “Pressure” *synthpop

August 15th, 2012 by | synthpop |

As Justin Mantell and Darin Thompson of QUALMS gear up for the release of their upcoming LP, Honeylung, they are offering a little taste with single, “Pressure.” Incorporating genre distinctive loud instrumentals over the vocals and steady synth buzzes, this track generously summarizes where the duo’s intentions are directed in Honeylung and doesn’t leave out the nostalgic 80’s impression left from QUALMS Split 7″ release last Winter with Orca Orca.

Black Pistol Fire – “Crows Feet” *Blues Rock

Kevin McKeown and Eric Owen may be Canadian-born but their relocation to Austin, Texas isn’t their only claim to the south – they produce some rich blues-rock that will even have southern natives jammin’.

Having been compared to the legendary Creedence Clearwater Revival in the past, their new single, “Crows Feet” channels the vigor of Jack White with the accessibility of The Black Keys. In other words: if you’re a fan of rock, don’t let this duet pass you by.

Download: The Wilde – This Is All For You *Mellowhop

August 9th, 2012 by | Electropop |

For any musician, Luke’s ambition should be an inspiration. He sure does make being productive look easy. The newest addition to The Wilde‘s track list is “This Is All For You,” a wobbly, anxiety-ridden stream of consciousness: “Actual me / I am actually fine / Pop two pills / And pretend I didn’t have wine.” Driven by an isolated guitar riff and featuring Hannah Sears during the chorus, it can be haunting and enlightening all at the same time.

“Proverbial you you have nothing to fear.” Listen & download below!

The Wilde – Run (Feat. Lucky Fours) *mellowhop, hip hop

The Wilde really nails it in his collaboration with Lucky Fours (aka Gio Jacuzzi), “Run.” Matching a powerpop melody with a super catchy hook, “I don’t really know what it feels like to live in the sun / but now I really know that it feels right to break free and run,” their controlled spoken word / rap makes escapism feel less guilty.
