Video: In The Corner (Dylan Owen feat. Kinetics)

May 14th, 2012 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

If there’s nothing I love more, it’s collaboration. Especially when one of my fave rappers gets with another talented rapper and produces something WORTH listening to. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the future of of rap is here. It’s happening right now, kids. Bye bye to all the rappers with limited vocabularies, overinflated egos, and absolutely nothing to show for all their big talk. Essentially, anybody can get up on stage and throw around a few cuss words and call themselves a hustler but can you tell a STORY? A story that’s real, asks deep questions, challenges social norms, empathizes with what it’s like to be a struggling human being?

Enter Dylan Owen, a 20 year old up and comer from Goshen,New York.

The story gets better. This kid got with Jeremy Dussoliet from my all time fave rap duo, Kinetics & One Love, and cranked out a video that, after watching it more than a few times, gave me a feeling in my gut that I was witnessing the game of rap on the brink of a complete 180. These guys are telling stories that are relevant – they’re making rap MATTER.

The combination of Owen’s fast-paced, go-hard delivery with Dussoliet’s (a.k.a. Kinetics) gritty, no-nonsense, straight-from-the-gut story telling in this video is unreal. Watch “In The Corner” below.

Hidden Gem: Superhumanoids *alternative pop

May 13th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Pop |

I recently came across a fantastic LA based band called Superhumanoids. These guys do a great job of creating unique tunes blending indie rock, dream pop, and electronic sounds that are relaxing and even give the listener a touch of nostalgia. I was obviously stoked to see they’re currently touring with another awesome LA band, Active Child. View the rest of the tour schedule here.

Right now I’m really digging the track “Geri” off their upcoming LP, Exhibitionists. Listen and download that plus their most recent track, “Too Young For Love”.

I also love their music video “Mikelah”, which you should view below. (more…)

Kinetics & One Love – Cross-Fading Back To Normal *remix/mashup project

May 8th, 2012 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Hip-Hop/Rap, Mashup, Remix |

What do you get when you mix songs off Kinetics & One Love‘s 2009 album, Fading Back to Normal, with hits like Kanye’s “Runaway” and M83’s “Midnight City”? A sick explosion of the hottest pop and hip hop tunes mixed with the gritty rap that is K&OL’s trademark.

Cross-fading Back To Normal is the epic remix project K&OL have just completed and lemme tell you, each mash-up/remix is a total eargasm.

Download the entire mixtape FOR FREE here!

My favorite song is Track 9 off Cross-fading, a mash-up of “Midnight City” with K&OL’s “Dazed and Confused”.

Video: Kinetics & One Love – Sign Language ft. Vita Chambers & Orchestra)

April 27th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video, Pop |

It’s been awhile since I’ve guest blogged for BeforeBigs but I’m stoked to be back and giving you guys the latest info on one of my favorite rap duos, Kinetics & One Love. I think the reason I dig these guys so much is because they’re more than just rappers: these dudes are straight up ballers. Having met as students at Cornell University and forming a collaboration out of a mutual passion for music, they soon after created the chorus to B.o.B’s smash hit “Airplanes” which reached No. 2 on the iTune’s singles chart just days after its release. Since then, the gifted pair has been consistently turning out songs under the Warner Music Group label that blow my mind both soundwise and lyrically.

In an industry that has become over saturated with all these wannabe’s who spit about how they ball so hard and all I hear is “blah blah blah,” Kinetics & One Love brings something to the stage that is so real and so raw. Their lyrics are deep and from the heart – the gut if you will – and coupled with metaphors that are provocative and make you think about the deeper things in life.

With all that being said, I was beyond stoked when Kinetics & One Love officially released the music video for the orchestral version of their song “Sign Language.” I distinctly remember saying to myself, “this needs to be the future of rap.” The video also features performances by Vita Chambers of Universal Republic Records and the Shattered Glass Chamber Orchestra.

Download the mp3 to this song here. Watch the video below. (more…)

Music. Fashion. Collaboration. The Future of NOW.

January 7th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Before Bigs Exclusive, Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Electro, Electronic Rock, Electropop, Guest Mix, Hip-Hop/Rap, Rock |

So I decided to create a rather unconventional music post today. Get ready to be INSPIRED.

I’ve recently helped some friends of mine launch a clothing line called the  ADAMO Collection. The whole idea behind this company is to provide a platform for rebelliously creative young people to pursue their passions, collaborate with each other, and express themselves freely. As a forward thinking company centered on passion and creativity, we look forward to working with bands, DJs, music blogs, etc!

Needless to say, launching a clothing line sure isn’t easy and 18 hour workdays are not unheard of. In order to stay sane and keep inspiration flowing, we blast music on our sick sound system 24/7. I thought it’d be neat to share some of these tunes with you guys and so I’ve compiled a playlist of some of our most listened to tracks on spotify. I’ve included everything from electronica/dubstep artists like Pendulum, Doctor P, Flux Pavilion, Emancipator, The Glitch Mob, Benny Benassi, and Steve Aoki, to more indie/alternative tracks from bands like The Naked and Famous, The Civil Wars, and M83. I also threw in some Tinie Tempah, Coldplay, and Claude Debussy. I think my favorite track has gotta be Pendulum’s The Island ( Dusk til Dawn remix). SOOO GOOD. Introducing the Glass Child *singer/songwriter

January 4th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie |

Well it’s been awhile since I’ve really dug a female artist but oh my goodness, Charlotte Eriksson (the Glass Child), is IT. She’s got IT. She’s sensational and original. The combination of her gritty voice and intense lyrics moves my soul just a lil bit. At just 19, she moved from her homeland of Sweden to London to devote herself completely to music. The result has been the release of her self-produced debut EP and the creation of her own record label, “Broken Glass Records.”

I love every one of her songs off her newly released EP, This Is How Ghosts Are Made. My two favorite songs are “Insanity” and “Tell The World” (You can stream the entire album on the Glass Child tumblr):

The City Streets

December 16th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Pop, Rock |

It was one of those cold, lonely nights and I was in need of some warm music to keep me company. The City Streets provided just that. Hailing from Alberta, Canada, this trio dubs their style of music “melodic power pop with with the spirit of punk rock always shining a light.” Great stuff. So my two favorite songs by these guys are”Irish Rose” and “All is Grace,” both off their 2010 album The Jazz Age. I’ve included mp3s of both songs. ENJOY!

Introducing The Chocolate Robots….

December 13th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Rock |

Well here’s a swell little band I knew nothing about. Isn’t that usually the case though? I feel like there are a million darling bands out there that, when I hear ’em, I think to myself, “GOLLY GEE, WHY HAVEN’T I HEARD THESE GUYS BEFORE”?

Ladies and Gents, I give you….The Chocolate Robots. What first drew me in about these guys was the fact that THEY HAVE A STORY. The band is composed of three brothers: Mike Giresi, Mutt Giresi, and Marco Giresi. These guys grew up jammin’ in their parents’ pizza shop….thus the title of their latest record “Pizza Face” which can be purchased here.

COOL FACT: The album was recorded using a bunch of old tube and tape equipment their dad had left over from being an Italian singer/songwriter in the 70’s.

Well, I’ll let you get to listening to these guys. My two favorite tracks off their new album are “Impossible Princess” and “Young Luff,” both of which can be downloaded via the link below. CIAO.

Video: San Cisco – “Girls Do Cry” *Indie

November 28th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video |

The other day I stumbled upon a dandy little music video by an Australian band called San Cisco. Basically, these indie poppers have swag. Having recently released their debut EP “Golden Revolver,” San Cisco is gearing up for an exciting year.

They released a video for their single “Girls Do Cry” and they collaborated with an independent fashion design collective based in New York. The video is a vintage inspired clip of several young women who are independent fashion designers. Needless to say, the song goes perfectly with the footage. Check out the awesome video below!
