It was a great show (read my review here), and I was afforded the opportunity to interview rising LA hip-hop act Thurz before the show as he was opening for Chuck Inglish. Here’s most of what I (@ImZachSE) talked about with Thurz (@Thurzday) before the show.

Preview: Brokechella 2014 *best LA value festival of 2014

April 4th, 2014 by | Concert/Festival Review, Guest Mix |

brokechella poster final 2 1 485x600 Preview: Brokechella 2014 *best LA value festival of 2014A festival I had an unforgettable experience at because of the art, the underrated music, the hospitality of event staffers and overall fun in such a local scene was Brokechella 2012. Last year I couldn’t attend because of Coachella and this year personally won’t be able to attend but that doesn’t mean I won’t have awesome friends covering the festival for me while I enjoy Coachella weekend 2.

For those in Southern California that can’t afford Coachella and are into more intimate festival scenes, then Brokechella is for you! With over 50 musicians performing and even comedians this year, it’s sure to be a festival worth going to. For $10, that’s less than 50 cents an artist and you know the people of cARTel know how to throw a super fly dope fun event for all. Now it’s in 4th year, Brokechella is sure to be one of the most talked about and underrated events of the season in Los Angeles and I highly recommend any music and/or comedy fan to check it out as you will have as great a time I did two years ago attending this Downtown LA event.

For more info on Brokechella, visit Brokechella.com and purchase tickets here. Because I’m pretty pumped the event has continued for the 4th year in a row, I’ve created a playlist of 15 artists from Brokechella to look forward to including BtB favorites Azad RightWarm BrewVerbs and many more! Review: Jamie N Commons live at The Grammys offices

1174833 10101182027239786 1504856331 n 600x600 Review: Jamie N Commons live at The Grammys officesProbably most of you don’t know but I recently got hired by The Grammys to work in their Awards department and help with the process of all the award submissions they’ve been getting. It’s been an amazing experience and one of my favorite parts of it is when artists drop by to perform a few songs for us. The latest act, Jamie N Commons, was signed by mega-hit producer Alex Da Kid, whose record label, Kid In A Korner, also has Imagine Dragons on the label.

Anyways Jamie N Commons WILL BE A STAR! The dude has a unique voice that as Alex Da Kid described as a “timeless instrument”. Listening to him live was like wandering through nature being lost and then hearing Jamie’s raspy Johnny Cash-like vocals guiding you to the direction you need to take. His voice will take him far and my favorite part of their brief performance was when the pianist and the bassist (who didn’t have his bass) sang with Jamie to create awesome harmonized vocals on some of the choruses. It was a great performance and Jamie N Commons are an extremely humble band to keep an eye on as they are currently in the studio working on their major label debut album.

Below are two songs he performed which I absolutely loved, “Wash Me In The Water” and “Lead Me Home” (which was used in AMC’s The Walking Dead) (more…)

Review: Go Go Bizkitt! and The Phantom’s Revenge at @TheCentralSAPC

3922491835cf11e2974722000a1fb774 7 600x600 Review: Go Go Bizkitt! and The Phantoms Revenge at @TheCentralSAPCLast Wednesday, I experienced the funky sounds of Go Go Bizkitt! and The Phantom’s Revenge at The Central SAPC in Santa Monica, CA. Both DJs were awesome with Go Go Bizkitt spinning that funky disco house vibes all night while The Phantom’s Revenge played mostly disco house with some trap music and some electro vibes. One of my favorite parts of this dance party show was hearing both of the acts remix Daft Punk.

Stream some of my favorite songs from the two rising DJs below.

Goldroom, Ghost Beach & Carousel Light Up the Echoplex

(Pictured Above; Ghost Beach)

Last Thursday, I was blessed to see a great show at the Echoplex in Silverlake. Goldroom, Carousel and Ghost Beach absolutely rocked a packed house full of energetic hipsters. All three have a style each unique in it’s own way.

Originally apart of synth pop trio NightWaves, Goldroom of Los Angeles provided a laid-back disco feel similar to Poolside. It is perfect for the typical Southern California vibe and even though it is not summertime anymore, it sure felt like it when he was on stage. Below is my favorite track of his from the night.

Goldroom – “Morgan’s Bay”:

Brooklyn based electro-pop duo, Carousel will soon become house hold names in the music industry. Their catchy and genuine sound  got the crowd dancing their shoes off. This was the first time I have ever seen them live but certainly not the last. Check out my favorite track of theirs from the night that will surly be getting some radio time soon.

Carousel – “Open Road”:

By far the best performance of the night that I saw was that of Ghost Beach. Hailing from New York City, this tropical grit pop group provides an 80′s rock influence with a modern day alternative rock sound. They were featured on our Best You Never Heard 7: Summer Underdogs mixtape back in August. This group is going places and I look forward to seeing them perform live again. My favorite track of theirs from the night is below.

Ghost Beach – “Tear Us Apart”:

As a whole, this show featured some great electro-pop up-and-comers that are worth taking a closer look. I cannot wait to see how they progress as artists.

Review: Carousel at Abbott Kinney Festival

October 8th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Before Bigs Exclusive, Concert/Festival Review, Electropop, synthpop |

dce53c0410d611e29ed51231381b333c 7 600x600 Review: Carousel at Abbott Kinney FestivalAbbott Kinney Festival is an annual street fest in the Venice Beach area filled with hippies and young socialites. It was my first year going and after getting to see my favorite up-and-coming band out of Boston perform, Carousel, I walked up and down the closed off Abbott Kinney Boulevard and saw tons of herbal medicine booths, a “Vote for Rosanne Barr for President” as part of the Peace and Freedom (and Stoner) party, and tons of other people selling massages, clothing, artwork and other stuff you’d normally find along the Venice Beach boardwalk. There were also a ton of cops, a ton of hipster parents and tons of children.

However I came to Abbott Kinney Festival to see Carousel, an up-and-coming indie/electro-pop trio out of Boston who has a sound similar to Miike Snow and will become a huge mainstream act once they get in some more touring and shoot some videos for their songs, which are all great!

I caught most of Carousel‘s set which the crowd seemed to enjoy even if only a few knew their music and many enjoyed their “Dancing On My Own” Robyn cover (which I hope they release). Stream and download my two favorites I heard them perform.

Adventure Gallery @TheCentralSAPC

 Adventure Gallery @TheCentralSAPC

Earlier this week, Portland based Adventure Gallery rocked the night at the renowned, The Central Social Aid and Pleasure Club in Santa Monica.

They have an 80′s rock/pop feel mixed with a modern day electro pop sound. Perfect for the people with 80′s nostalgia looking for a new and fresh sound. This group is small now but has the makings to do some big things down the road. It will be interesting to see how they progress.

Enjoy some of the tracks they performed that night below.
