Last Saturday night, after attending Tarfest (review here) and going out to dinner in K-Town, we arrived at Dance Yourself Clean at The Satellite to see Powers and Body Language. We ended up seeing only Body Language and the fantastic Dance Yourself Clean DJs spinning indie dance pop tunes but what a wonderful show it was. Here’s my review of Body Language.
Last Saturday I caught two shows in one day. The first show I went to was a mini-festival free at La Brea Tar Pits called Tarfest. It was the 13th Annual Tarfest and this year they had sexy singer/dancer Gavin Turek headline and emerging psychedelic rock band The Shelters perform before her. We caught these two acts and they were both delightful to the diverse all-ages crowd. It was truly a fun experience going to Tarfest and seeing these two acts so let’s get to my review of them. So I decided the best way to put together all the songs I discovered in August 2015 would be to make an epic playlist dedicated to all those songs. Below is the 60-track playlist which ranges in genre and the popularity of the artist. Read below the playlist to hear my thoughts on several of these artists to keep an eye on. (more…)
Before the Bigs Music Podcast episode 9 was a bit shorter (around an hour versus hour and 5 minutes like the other episodes) but it was packed full of great new tunes in hip-hop, dance, alternative and much more variety as Tahsan Scott of Groundsounds.com came on the show and brought with him a few new tracks from Action Bronson featuring Chance The Rapper and produced by Mark Ronson, Timothy Rhyme and Tuxedo.
We also played new releases from Toro Y Moi, Cape Lion, Satellite Stories, Von Sell, Armors, Con Bro Chill and A.W.O.L. featuring Freedom Fry. Also we go in depth with the future of Years and Years and electronica trio from the UK whose crafting a sound similar to fellow UK producers Rudimental and Disclosure combining 90′s R&B elements with house sounds that I’m absolutely loving lately.
This week I had my friend Joel from Lights & Music Entertainment, a concert promoting/music production company that is on the rise with parties in LA, Seattle and Portland. Joel Albers is taking concerts to another level by creating dance-able vibes through indie pop vibes. I attended the last night of 8th Grader’s residency at The Satellite through Joel’s Dance Yrself Clean party in Silverlake and had a fantastic time singing and dancing a bit along to 8th Grader‘s Neo R&B/indie electro pop vibes. We also talk his new showcase, KILLER DISKO, more info here.
Stream the podcast in full above where Joel and I talk not only 8th Grader but we get an exclusive preview of 8th Grader‘s collaboration with TouchTone who Joel calls the most underrated disco producer in LA, new edit from JRocc (of The Knocks) to Tuxedo‘s “Do It”. We got lounge house from PANG, new song from Scarlett Johansson/Este Haim’s The Singles collaboration which is produced by Dave Sitek, new remixes from Shook, Cats Hero, Monsieur Adi and Chimes to songs I absolutely love. Also Joel introduces me to machineheart, plus we close out the show with a feel good electro house pop song from Goldhouse and disco funky vibes from Falcon Punch. Stream most of the tracks played on the podcast on soundcloud below.
Before the Bigs Podcast 7 is out and it’s a doozy full of 15 tracks as I hosted the show solo but found some great hidden gems to play for you. Included in this episode are new tracks from GRiZ, Big Data, Galantis, Viceroy featuring K.flay, Urban Cone, Great Good Fine Ok, Max And the Moon, Pr0files, Bad Wave, the black and the white, A-L-X and Broken Witt Rebels. Didn’t particularly focus on any one artist and played a variety of upbeat music including Coleman Hell whose producing a new kind of alternative dance.
On the latest episode of Before the Bigs Music Podcast I got my friend and rapper Kosha Dillz on the show. We talk about his latest song “Tubeshvat Hop”, his upcoming plans including his own showcase at SXSW 2015 and Warped Tour this summer and he even spits a little freestyle for us! If you don’t want to hear me talk and just want the songs we played on the podcast, stream and download below.
The latest episode of Before the Bigs Music Podcast has me talking about Columbia Records latest emerging artist you need to follow, Leon Bridges, who just released two songs on iTunes this week that we play on the show, “Coming Home” and “Better Man”, another new (and FREE) song from Venice Beach Folk/Electronic band Magic Giant, who are performing with Gavin Turek and Freedom Fry on Valentine’s Day at The Troubadour (purchase tickets here). Speaking of Freedom Fry, we play a deep house remix from Feast to their song “Shaky Ground”. I talk about and play new releases from Vermont’s Argonaut&Wasp, COIN, and FMLYBND. Karl Kling‘s got a new song to be released on his forthcoming debut album.
I even bring my roommate/dance music exper, Sam Aaron, on the show to talk some new dance songs from Body Language, LA beat maker Coyote Kisses, French house/deep house DJ Le Youth, dutch house DJ Funkerman and a new mashup from The Hood Internet. He thought The Hood Internet mashup was from Classixx so I play out the podcast with our favorite Classixx track, “I Get You” featuring Jeppe.
Stream/download the podcast above or if you don’t want to hear what I say about the music, stream the podcast playlist below on Soundcloud and most of the songs I’ve played on all the episodes updated weekly on Spotify.
