Stream: Franc Moody – “Dopamine” *disco funk similar to Daft Punk

March 15th, 2017 by | Disco |

North West London collective Franc Moody announce their new single “Dopamine” following in the footsteps of their 2016 instrumental EP1. “Dopamine” takes this same lithe funk sensibility and adds a deft vocal and lyrical content that plays with the physical and emotional effects of the song. I love the funky basslines, the smooth melodies and the lyrical content keeps me into the song very much. I think Franc Moody is onto some low-fi dance music.

Stream: Tuxedo – “2nd Time Around” *disco/funk

March 8th, 2017 by | Disco, Electropop, Pop, R&B, synthpop |

I love the future disco/funk vibes of Tuxedo and I’m so excited to share the first release from their upcoming album Tuxedo II (pre-order) out March 24 through Stones Throw Records. “2nd Time Around” continues the impressive upbeat debut release Tuxedo dropped in 2015 and I can’t wait for this 2nd album as it will be wholly original yet still draw influence from the future funk wobble of Zapp, Gap, Jam/Lewis and Junie Morrison, while nodding lyrically to Mtume, Jodeci and Cameo.

Tuxedo is Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One. The crystallization of their 2nd album’s concept comes courtesy of its message of universal love; thanks to the signature combination of soul and pop sensibility that have come to define Mayer’s hook. I can’t wait to hear the full length, definitely buying this album when it drops!

Stream “2nd Time Around” below, watch them perform it live on Jimmy Kimmel Live and peep the upcoming tour dates, you do not want to miss this duo live! (more…)

Miami Horror – “Leila” *NEW ’80s-INSPIRED CONCEPTUAL RECORD

March 3rd, 2017 by | Dance, Disco, Electropop, New Wave, synthpop |

One of my all-time favorite Australian bands Miami Horror has released a new single “Leila” which will be on their new 80’s-inspired conceptual record The Shapes out March 17th.

Stream “Leila” below which has this upbeat disco vibe that is a lot of

“Leila” is the first song released from Miami Horror‘s new conceptual release The Shapes – a unique 5 track release that has Miami Horror step out of their comfort zone. The Shapes combines upbeat percussive grooves, with experimental vocal styles that echo Talking Heads and other post-new wave groups of the 80s.

In conjunction with the EP’s release, Miami Horror are working closely with visual artists that have inspired their music such as Erin Garcia, Spenceroni, Lynnie Zulu & Annukil, as well as Argentinian and South African artists John Mccam & Sebatian Borkenhagen.

I can’t wait to hear the rest of The Shapes and give you guys a thorough review of the 5-track EP, I love everything Miami Horror does and this continues their vibrant electric vibe they bring to their music.

Review: Body Language live at The Satellite

September 29th, 2015 by | Concert/Festival Review, Dance, Disco, Electropop, synthpop |

Last Saturday night, after attending Tarfest (review here) and going out to dinner in K-Town, we arrived at Dance Yourself Clean at The Satellite to see Powers  and Body Language. We ended up seeing only Body Language and the fantastic Dance Yourself Clean DJs spinning indie dance pop tunes but what a wonderful show it was. Here’s my review of Body Language.

Review: Tarfest 2015 with Gavin Turek and The Shelters

September 28th, 2015 by | Concert/Festival Review, Disco, Electropop, Pop, Rock |

Last Saturday I caught two shows in one day. The first show I went to was a mini-festival free at La Brea Tar Pits called Tarfest. It was the 13th Annual Tarfest and this year they had sexy singer/dancer Gavin Turek headline and emerging psychedelic rock band The Shelters perform before her. We caught these two acts and they were both delightful to the diverse all-ages crowd. It was truly a fun experience going to Tarfest and seeing these two acts so let’s get to my review of them. Before the Bigs Music Podcast episode 9 was a bit shorter (around an hour versus hour and 5 minutes like the other episodes) but it was packed full of great new tunes in hip-hop, dance, alternative and much more variety as Tahsan Scott of Groundsounds.com came on the show and brought with him a few new tracks from Action Bronson featuring Chance The Rapper and produced by Mark RonsonTimothy Rhyme and Tuxedo.

We also played new releases from Toro Y MoiCape LionSatellite Stories, Von SellArmorsCon Bro Chill and A.W.O.L. featuring Freedom Fry. Also we go in depth with the future of Years and Years and electronica trio from the UK whose crafting a sound similar to fellow UK producers Rudimental and Disclosure combining 90’s R&B elements with house sounds that I’m absolutely loving lately.
