Last Thursday, The Burning Ear put together a fantastic free show with Los Angeles funky brother duo Das Tapes bringing their dance vibes to The Spare Room at The Roosevelt Hotel for Glenn Close’s birthday. It was a fun night and one of the best free shows I’ve been to since Das Tapes and the audience not only sang happy birthday to Glenn Close while she was bowling nearby the stage, but I met actor Michael Pena and told him how I enjoyed his movies, he said thanks and gave me a bro hug, it was awesome! Yet the best part of the evening was hearing Das Tapes perform their new jam, “Fetish” which is an absolute hit that sounds like a mix of Classixx, Poolside, Toro Y Moi and Chromeo.
Stream and download the new track from Das Tapes below.
Saturday night I saw one of the best performances of a DJ singing ever in Brooklyn’s Chris Glover aka Penguin Prison performing live at Echoplex. The only other DJ who also sang that possibly rivals how awesome of a performance I saw Saturday night might be that of Mystery Skulls back in October at Culture Collide Festival. (more…)
Last Saturday, a few buddies and I caught, Armand Van Helden, aka 1/2 of critically acclaimed DJ duo Duck Sauce, at Create Nightclub in Hollywood. His DJ set went by super quick although it lasted for over two hours, which shows how entertaining of a set he performed, which was mostly disco and progressive house, lots of fun!
Anyways, I don’t remember a ton of what he spun, but when he performed 2009 Duck Sauce hit “Anyway” and the latest Duck Sauce single, 2013′s “It’s You”. Oh and also his 1996 classic, “The Funk Phenomena”; watch music video’s for those three songs below.
About a month ago on my way home from work, I put on Songza’s Indie Dance & Nu Disco playlist and about 3-5 songs in I hear Australian musician Lancelot‘s “Spoken Word” and immediately fall in love with his tunes. Within that same week I believe I heard another track, maybe “Higher Ground”, which I also dug a lot.
The dude has less than 5,000 Facebook fans, which will change when DJs more well-known than Goldroom and Le Crayon start remixing his tunes or when he starts remixing some mainstream music in Australia and worldwide. Either way, I hope he comes to LA soon, so I can impress my Nu-Disco music friends when I invite them to see Lancelot.
Below is my favorite, “Spoken Word”, his latest project, “Thinking Of You” EP and a 2-track Free EP as well.. I really love the handclaps or finger snaps with the piano to open the song plus I believe I hear children cheering in the background of the song, just lovely dance vibes especially when the guitar riff jumps in, so smooth!

This years lineup continues the tradition of diverse musicians from all over the world which includes several personal favorites of ours including Miami Horror, Plastic Plates, The Silent Comedy, Chateau Marmont, GRMLN, Gemini Club, Mystery Skulls and Ghost Wave.

Originally released in the Fall of 2012 by Dennaton Games for PC, “Hotline Miami” was inspired by the 80s aesthetic movie, “Drive.” “Hotline Miami” is now out for Mac, PS3 and PSVita. The game and its accompanying soundtrack has been highly reviewed within the video game community with praise from non-gamers, as well.
Australians Miami Horror DJs (of the band Miami Horror) will be spinning their dance-pop jams at the event as headliner. Miami Horror is known for their 80′s-influenced dance music and single collaborations with artists such as Kimbra and Alan Palomo of Neon Indian.Watch videos to my two favorite Miami Horror songs below. While I didn’t catch the entirety of the three acts I saw perform at the Santa Monica Pier for All Hands on Deck, I thoroughly enjoyed this show as it was outdoors with the Pacific Ocean in the backdrop and I got to take an awesome chick to enjoy these upcoming acts with myself. Anyways here’s my review of Kisses, YACHT and Poolside at All Bands On Deck.
