Before the Bigs episode 4

Before I get to telling you what this latest episode is about, I’m happy to announce that we are on TuneIn so you can easily listen to the podcast from anywhere now!

The latest episode of Before the Bigs Music Podcast has me talking about Columbia Records latest emerging artist you need to follow, Leon Bridges, who just released two songs on iTunes this week that we play on the show, “Coming Home” and “Better Man”, another new (and FREE) song from Venice Beach Folk/Electronic band Magic Giant, who are performing with Gavin Turek and Freedom Fry on Valentine’s Day at The Troubadour (purchase tickets here). Speaking of Freedom Fry, we play a deep house remix from Feast to their song “Shaky Ground”. I talk about and play new releases from Vermont’s Argonaut&WaspCOIN, and FMLYBNDKarl Kling‘s got a new song to be released on his forthcoming debut album.

I even bring my roommate/dance music exper, Sam Aaron, on the show to talk some new dance songs from Body Language, LA beat maker Coyote Kisses, French house/deep house DJ Le Youth, dutch house DJ Funkerman and a new mashup from The Hood Internet. He thought The Hood Internet mashup was from Classixx so I play out the podcast with our favorite Classixx track, “I Get You” featuring Jeppe.

Stream/download the podcast above or if you don’t want to hear what I say about the music, stream the podcast playlist below on Soundcloud and most of the songs I’ve played on all the episodes updated weekly on Spotify.

It’s a great location with DJs and bands performing on or near the beach, there should be beautiful weather present and hopefully a laid back fun ambiance in what should be a very fun one-day music festival. This will be my third time attending the Southern California festival in which I’ve discovered some real talented artists. Here’s the set times:

c3e4d78e9c6511e39d7812ff38e342a5 8 600x600 Review: Penguin Prison live at EchoplexSaturday night I saw one of the best performances of a DJ singing ever in Brooklyn’s Chris Glover aka Penguin Prison performing live at Echoplex. The only other DJ who also sang that possibly rivals how awesome of a performance I saw Saturday night might be that of Mystery Skulls back in October at Culture Collide Festival. (more…)

Thank You Thursday #2 – Thanksgiving Edition

November 28th, 2013 by | Alternative/Indie, Electronic Dance Music, House, Music Video, New Wave, Pop, Rock |

thanksgiving Thank You Thursday #2 Thanksgiving Edition

It’s Thanksgiving (or close to it… hey we all got things to do!) and it wouldn’t be right to not give a quick THANK YOU to some dope ass artists that have done some dope ass shit this year.  To keep it nice and concise I’m just gonna touch on one dope thing they did that was original and/or creative and/or unique and/or interesting.  If you don’t know what this is or why I do it please go here for a quick explanation.

Noir x Lomez x Atnarko – Lost Again (Feat. Symbol)

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Is pretty much all I can say. This shit is so damn sexy and cool and right it kinda hurts.  Production, Melody, Composition, bass chord progression, lyrics, etc. Not to mention it has that new wave vibe to it that I have always absolutely love.  One of the best parts of the song is the very tasteful bridge that comes in and introduces a whole new section of the song and it kinda almost takes off (if that makes any sense) at 2:55. Pretty cool that Pete Tong made this an Essential New Tune also. Thankful to have worked with Symbol in the past. Great shit has been made here.

Walking Shapes – Keep

The whole video is ridiculously well shot and the song is amazingly well written.  The first thing (along with many) that struck me as impressive was the whole Indie aesthetic of the video to go with the indie-rock song. Nate HoHo (lead singer/front man in the video) had a stellar performance coupled in with the tasteful nudity that was 100% well placed all made sense.  Great pay off at the end too. Dude is a visionary. Much respect, THANK YOU! slightly NSFW

Pre10d *Full Album*

16 minutes for a whole album? Yes, I could take a few lessons in this. Thank you for showing me that a short and concise album can be done and effective. Interesting beats, direct (and indirect) lyrics at times that actually are saying a lot (and nothing) all at the same time. Got a dope track with him and LAZERlibby coming out in 2014. THANK YOU!

Carolyn Malachi – Finally
Love this lyrics video & song. Love the over the top dramatic facial features of every word. Love her whole brand packaging.  THANK YOU!

Lazerbitch – Bass Goes Boom [Feat. Symbol]
Music don’t always gotta be so cereal, right?! Great Beat, Great Rhymes, Great Hook. But the video… very very well done with very minimal resources. The strip club shots were all pro looking. NSFW?! maybe. 100% dope though. THANK YOU!

“Two of the most powerful words in the English language for bringing about change, Daren, are “thank you.” Especially when offered before the change even occurs and everything still looks pretty much like it did yesterday. ”

Review: Armand Van Helden at Create Nightclub

October 25th, 2013 by | Concert/Festival Review, Dance, Disco, Electro, House |

1384154 10151901357046413 663077003 n 400x600 Review: Armand Van Helden at Create NightclubLast Saturday, a few buddies and I caught, Armand Van Helden, aka 1/2 of critically acclaimed DJ duo Duck Sauce, at Create Nightclub in Hollywood.  His DJ set went by super quick although it lasted for over two hours, which shows how entertaining of a set he performed, which was mostly disco and progressive house, lots of fun!

Anyways, I don’t remember a ton of what he spun, but when he performed 2009 Duck Sauce hit “Anyway” and the latest Duck Sauce single, 2013′s “It’s You”. Oh and also his 1996 classic, “The Funk Phenomena”; watch music video’s for those three songs below.

Hidden Gem: Lancelot *Australian Nu-Disco/Dance

919832 649621955053526 762950066 o 600x395 Hidden Gem: Lancelot *Australian Nu Disco/DanceAbout a month ago on my way home from work, I put on Songza’s Indie Dance & Nu Disco playlist and about 3-5 songs in I hear Australian musician Lancelot‘s “Spoken Word” and immediately fall in love with his tunes. Within that same week I believe I heard another track, maybe “Higher Ground”, which I also dug a lot.

The dude has less than 5,000 Facebook fans, which will change when DJs more well-known than Goldroom and Le Crayon start remixing his tunes or when he starts remixing some mainstream music in Australia and worldwide. Either way, I hope he comes to LA soon, so I can impress my Nu-Disco music friends when I invite them to see Lancelot.

Below is my favorite, “Spoken Word”, his latest project, “Thinking Of You” EP and a 2-track Free EP as well.. I really love the handclaps or finger snaps with the piano to open the song plus I believe I hear children cheering in the background of the song, just lovely dance vibes especially when the guitar riff jumps in, so smooth!
