Hidden Gem: The Yugos *infectious quirky lo-fi pop/rock

February 23rd, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Pop, Rock |

Cincinnati based band The Yugos will release their album Weighing the Heart on March 10th via Old Flame Records. When I heard their song “Ingenue” back in early February, I was hooked! I can’t wait for their album as I think this band has influences from bands like The Talking Heads, The Psychadelic Furs and The Cure. You might not love it on your first listen but once you listen again, you won’t want to stop as it’s got this dark infectious lo-fi rock/pop vibe that sounds fresh!

Introducing Los Colognes *tropical smooth fun

February 8th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Ambient, Electropop, Hidden Gem, Pop |

Nashville-based Los Colognes have just announced their third album The Wave, out May 12th via Big Deal Media / Thirty Tigers. Last month they released the first track “Flying Apart,” which has such a tropical smooth sound I’m hooked on! The band has a run of shows in the US, including opening slots for St. Paul and the Broken Bones and an appearance at Sasquatch Festival.

Guitarist/singer Jay Rutherford opines in “Flying Apart” – ‘Nobody believed / We’re all just hoping / Floating down streams.” It’s a song that invokes “the wave” metaphor of the album’s title, while churning through its own sonic sea of shimmering keyboards and guitars anchored by drummer Aaron Mortenson. The music evokes any of the best moments of late seventies or mid eighties FM radio while never being weighed down by the specter of influence. Los Colognes are a young band who have managed to forge their own sound while channeling the best sonic worlds of the decades past.

Stream “Flying Apart” below and find out more info on the upcoming album and Los Colognes upcoming tour dates!

Unlike the live approach used to record the group’s previous records, The Wave was built from the ground up with attention to each part. There is a certain economy of space in the songs that feel’s deliberate, while never ceasing to be warm and inclusive. Guitar and keyboard lines drift off each other in between lyrical exchanges while Mortenson propels the beat, sometimes meditative, sometimes driving.
The journey to finish recording The Wave was its own quest for Rutherford and Mortenson, a more deliberate process of creation and craft that shows a band becoming fully aware of its voice and its vision. Los Colognes have given us a singular collection of quietly anthemic tunes held together by philosophical reflection and damn fine rock and roll chops. The Wave is coming.
The Wave is out May 12th, preorder the album HERE.

Kyko *tropical electronic pop/rock

November 28th, 2016 by | Alternative/Indie, Chill/Jam/Reggae, Electronic Rock, Electropop, Hidden Gem, Pop |

The latest Hidden Gem I got for you is London outfit Kyko. Formed in 2014, this young pop band is crafting a sound that keeps getting better. They just released “Nature” which is very Vampire Weekend/Paul Simon‘s Graceland-esque and I LOVE IT! They released “Nature” earlier this month and before that have had excellent releases on their soundcloud.

I discovered this band through a reddit post about people looking for music influenced by Graceland and African artists that influenced Paul Simon in making that classic album. I first heard Kyko’s “Animals” and fell in love with the tropical laid back pop/rock vibe that is very easy to groove to. Once I heard “Nature” and the several other songs on their soundcloud, I was hooked and hand to feature them on BtB.

Hidden Gem: Cobi *emerging soulful pop act similar to Hozier!

October 31st, 2016 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Pop |

Shout out to Go Lightly Media who keeps pitching me really talented emerging artists and the latest I present to you today is Cobi. His first single, “Don’t You Cry For Me” has garnered over 15 million streams on Spotify since debuting in May and I love the track!

Cobi reminds me of three other emerging artists I really dig in Hozier (similar voice and production), Leon Bridges (similar soulful vibe) and Jamie N Commons (similar instrumentals and arranging). I think Cobi can achieve similar success as these artists and even rise to heights beyond what they’ve currently achieved and I love Leon Bridges and Jamie N Commons!

Los Angeles catch me enjoying the soulful vibes of Cobi and Australian indie folk-rock band Boy & Bear at Teragram Ballroom this Wednesday November 2nd. Highly recommend this show as I’m a new fan of what Cobi is putting out there and a HUGE FAN of the headliner, Boy & Bear, who remind me of a mix between The War On Drugs and Houndmouth.  Stream “Don’t You Cry For Me” and “Prophet Story” from Cobi below.

Hidden Gem: Golden Coast – “Comeback Kid” *Smooth Electronic Pop

October 13th, 2016 by | Electropop, Hidden Gem, Pop |

Golden Coast is officially on my radar with the release of their new single, “Comeback Kid”. The track sports the best of everything this duo has to offer: a dance-able beat, hooky leads, anthemic sing-along breaks and just the right amount of head nod; I LOVE it!

A little more on the band from their publicist:

Golden Coast conjures up its California namesake with danceable drums, sunny synths, verby guitars and just enough rasp in the falsetto to offset the levity. The duo made the trek from the mountains of Colorado and the San Jacinto desert to Los Angeles nearly a decade ago, met in college while producing and writing for various artists before finally deciding to team up and release a project of their own. Golden Coast combines the best of both their skill-sets: a mixture of electronic and organic instruments, tight production, and sanguine themes set to no shortage of instantly hooky melodies.

Golden Coast gives us another indie pop gem with “Comeback Kid.” The second single off of their debut EP set to be released in November, this track sports the best of everything the band has to offer. If any of the other songs on the EP are half as infectious, we’ve got a pretty good feeling about this.

These guys are hidden gems because that’s not their only great track I dig, “Recess” also shows off their smooth electronic pop vibes and I see big potential from this duo! I first discovered the LA-based duo last year with “Futurist” and was hooked. So check out “Recess” and “Futurist” below.

March 18th, 2015 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie, Ambient, Before the Bigs Radio, Dance, Disco, Electronic Rock, Electropop, Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap, House, Pop, R&B, synthpop |

Before the Bigs Music Podcast episode 9 was a bit shorter (around an hour versus hour and 5 minutes like the other episodes) but it was packed full of great new tunes in hip-hop, dance, alternative and much more variety as Tahsan Scott of Groundsounds.com came on the show and brought with him a few new tracks from Action Bronson featuring Chance The Rapper and produced by Mark RonsonTimothy Rhyme and Tuxedo.

We also played new releases from Toro Y MoiCape LionSatellite Stories, Von SellArmorsCon Bro Chill and A.W.O.L. featuring Freedom Fry. Also we go in depth with the future of Years and Years and electronica trio from the UK whose crafting a sound similar to fellow UK producers Rudimental and Disclosure combining 90’s R&B elements with house sounds that I’m absolutely loving lately.

Hidden Gem: Saints of Valory *upbeat alternative Pop/Rock

April 8th, 2014 by | Alternative/Indie, Concert/Festival Review, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Pop, Rock |

I don’t know how I discovered this band, I just found four of their songs on my iTunes that I downloaded in December and finally got to. But wow, Saints of Valory‘s four song Possibilities EP is some great upbeat fun that I enjoy very much! This rock/alternative/pop band signed to Atlantic Records and are a hit!

Stream the Saints of Valory‘s Possibilities EP to understand the hype, my favorites are “Kids”, “Long Time Coming” and “Back Up”.

Oh wait, now I remember how I might have discovered them! When I was really into “Royals” covers, I think I came across theres and became a fan of the band. Watch their Saints of Valory‘s acoustic cover to “Royals”, the harmonized vocals are hot and makes you want to sing along to Lorde‘s catchy lyrics!

Hidden Gem: Cousin Matt *chill electronic duo

March 31st, 2014 by | Alternative/Indie, Chill/Jam/Reggae, Electropop, Hidden Gem, synthpop |

I was going to post this yesterday when I was experiencing a very lazy Sunday and overall withdrawal from a long fun weekend but I got lazy, what a surprise. Anyway I’d like to introduce you to Cousin Matt, a brand new Brooklyn/Atlanta based duo that have twinkling production, seductive vocals and a dreamy feel that really caught my ear. They’ve only released three tracks and I just heard their latest “Soft Science” yesterday and immediately became a fan of this emerging music duo.

The cousins New York and Atlanta confluence is felt, with a style and sound that brings to mind D’angelo and Sufjan Stevens, and an attitude and approach not unlike early LCD Soundsystem.
Here’s the three songs they’ve released so far. My favorites are “Pelicans” and “Soft Science”.
