March 16th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Dance, Electronic Rock, Electropop, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Pop |

When I first heard this song, I thought it was weird yet grabbed me because of its upbeat nature and I like the alternative, almost psychedelic vibes with uplifting lyrical content. Speelburg is intriguing, cool, strange, awesome and exciting! I really want to hear more from them and catch Speelburg (real name Noah Sacré) live!

March 15th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Chill/Jam/Reggae, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Pop, Rock |

My favorite emerging band Magic Giant. Yes, my favorite emerging band who continues to climb higher and higher in the mainstream music scene and whose tours are lasting longer and longer have released a new video and I love it!

They were couch-crashing at a friend’s farm in upstate NY and woke up to this beautiful scene outside their window. It was so serene that it inspired this acoustic arrangement of Set on Fire which you should watch below.

Freedom Fry – Junkie *happy indie pop

March 10th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Pop |

“Junkie” is Freedom Fry‘s second single and third new song of the year. In their words, This is our indie pop ode to being in love and hopelessly addicted to someone. – Bruce & Marie.

It’s a fun indie pop song and every time I hear a new song from Freedom Fry, I can’t wait for what they are going to bring next. Stream “Junkie” below.

Stream: Tuxedo – “2nd Time Around” *disco/funk

March 8th, 2017 by | Disco, Electropop, Pop, R&B, synthpop |

I love the future disco/funk vibes of Tuxedo and I’m so excited to share the first release from their upcoming album Tuxedo II (pre-order) out March 24 through Stones Throw Records. “2nd Time Around” continues the impressive upbeat debut release Tuxedo dropped in 2015 and I can’t wait for this 2nd album as it will be wholly original yet still draw influence from the future funk wobble of Zapp, Gap, Jam/Lewis and Junie Morrison, while nodding lyrically to Mtume, Jodeci and Cameo.

Tuxedo is Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One. The crystallization of their 2nd album’s concept comes courtesy of its message of universal love; thanks to the signature combination of soul and pop sensibility that have come to define Mayer’s hook. I can’t wait to hear the full length, definitely buying this album when it drops!

Stream “2nd Time Around” below, watch them perform it live on Jimmy Kimmel Live and peep the upcoming tour dates, you do not want to miss this duo live! (more…)

Hidden Gem: Airpark *Groove-heavy rock/pop

March 6th, 2017 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie, Pop, Rock |

Nashville-based alternative rock/pop duo Airpark released their debut track “All The Time” and I was hooked on them. Inspired by minimalism, melody and groove-heavy percussion, bandmates Michael Ford, Jr. and Ben Ford launched the group in 2016, one year after their previous project The Apache Relay quietly called it quits.

Stream “All The Time” below. It’s off Airpark‘s first EP Early Works, Volume 1, out now via Eugenia Hall Records. In fact, stream the four-track EP, it’s pretty good!

Below find a bio on Airpark, links to follow them, and upcoming tour dates.

New KYKO is out and I can’t stop moving around and bobbing my head listening to the latest from the rising South London musician that has this silky smooth pop vibe with vibrant instrumentals that grow as the song whirls into something quite special.

I love that there is African pop vibes, lyrics that are easy to get into and just a fun smooth attitude that builds wonderfully!

Hidden Gem: The Yugos *infectious quirky lo-fi pop/rock

February 23rd, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Pop, Rock |

Cincinnati based band The Yugos will release their album Weighing the Heart on March 10th via Old Flame Records. When I heard their song “Ingenue” back in early February, I was hooked! I can’t wait for their album as I think this band has influences from bands like The Talking Heads, The Psychadelic Furs and The Cure. You might not love it on your first listen but once you listen again, you won’t want to stop as it’s got this dark infectious lo-fi rock/pop vibe that sounds fresh!

Stream “Ingenue” below.

If you like that listen to “Steve French” and “Take Some Time” below. (more…)

Introducing Los Colognes *tropical smooth fun

February 8th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Ambient, Electropop, Hidden Gem, Pop |

Nashville-based Los Colognes have just announced their third album The Wave, out May 12th via Big Deal Media / Thirty Tigers. Last month they released the first track “Flying Apart,” which has such a tropical smooth sound I’m hooked on! The band has a run of shows in the US, including opening slots for St. Paul and the Broken Bones and an appearance at Sasquatch Festival.

Guitarist/singer Jay Rutherford opines in “Flying Apart” – ‘Nobody believed / We’re all just hoping / Floating down streams.” It’s a song that invokes “the wave” metaphor of the album’s title, while churning through its own sonic sea of shimmering keyboards and guitars anchored by drummer Aaron Mortenson. The music evokes any of the best moments of late seventies or mid eighties FM radio while never being weighed down by the specter of influence. Los Colognes are a young band who have managed to forge their own sound while channeling the best sonic worlds of the decades past.

Stream “Flying Apart” below and find out more info on the upcoming album and Los Colognes upcoming tour dates!

Unlike the live approach used to record the group’s previous records, The Wave was built from the ground up with attention to each part. There is a certain economy of space in the songs that feel’s deliberate, while never ceasing to be warm and inclusive. Guitar and keyboard lines drift off each other in between lyrical exchanges while Mortenson propels the beat, sometimes meditative, sometimes driving.
The journey to finish recording The Wave was its own quest for Rutherford and Mortenson, a more deliberate process of creation and craft that shows a band becoming fully aware of its voice and its vision. Los Colognes have given us a singular collection of quietly anthemic tunes held together by philosophical reflection and damn fine rock and roll chops. The Wave is coming.
The Wave is out May 12th, preorder the album HERE.

Review: Urban Cone at Bardot *electric catchy pop

February 8th, 2017 by | Concert/Festival Review, Electronic Rock, Electropop, Pop |

Monday night I caught the recently signed to Interscope band Urban Cone as they rocked the intimate stage at Bardot in front of a small but packed house in Hollywood. They were so damn catchy with their infectious electro-pop, I enjoyed just about every song they performed in their short but jam-packed set.

Last week they released the catchy pop hit, “Old School” which should be all over pop/top 40 radio stations and garnering tons of streams online. They’ve been making catchy alternative electro pop tracks for years and it seems with a major label backing, they could finally break out in the US as they continue to gain recognition, they clearly have what it takes and as they got a fun sound that’s hard not to like.

Stream or watch my 4 favorites they performed live below, “Old School”, “Sadness Disease” and “Come Back To Me” and “Urban Photograph”. (more…)

Introducing Chris Youmans and The Sound Agency *funk-pop-soul fusion

February 7th, 2017 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Chill/Jam/Reggae, Pop |
Chris Youmans & The Sound Agency came to life in 2013. At the group’s core is a collaboration between Youmans and multi-instrumentalist Colin Deas, who Youmans met while studying music at UC Berkeley. The Sound Agency takes the best elements of classic and modern pop, rock, funk, and soul and weaves them around Youmans’s infectious songs.

The band released their debut EP, Make Things Right, in February 2016 to a sold out crowd at Neck of the Woods in San Francisco. Following the release, the band moved from Berkeley to Los Angeles and has begun touring tirelessly on the west coast. This summer they will be making their debut at several California festivals and working on their next release.

The Make Things Right EP is currently streaming below on Bandcamp; my favorite song includes the title track.

CHRIS YOUMANS & THE SOUND AGENCY TOUR DATES
2/24 – Los Angeles, CA @ The Mint LA
3/4 – San Diego, CA @ Seven Grand SD
3/10 – San Francisco, CA @ The Hotel Utah Saloon
