Canada’s best alternative hip-hop band Zoo Legacy has released a new single in “CRWD” with a video release and single available for FREE download! “CRWD” continues their almost laid back hip-hop/alternative approach with catchy hooks and overall a grooving track easy to get into. I’ve long been a fan of this band and am glad to hear they have released something new!
Watch the video to “CRWD” below and watch support their kickstarter campaign so we can get a new album from these emerging musicians! (more…)
Our favorite hip-hop group from San Diego, Vokab Kompany, has released, “Don’t Owe You” their latest single and video from their upcoming collaboration album with Crush Effect. The album, titled VKCE, drops December 18 and I can’t wait for it. If the previous collaborations with VK and CE are any indication what’s to come between these two exciting up-and-coming acts, then this will be a must-listen album!

Our favorite alternative hip-hop group from Canada, Zoo Legacy, has finally released a new single and were proud to premier it on BeforeBigs.com. We are huge fans of this band who has the alternative instrumental style of The XX with the rap swagger of Kid Cudi. They just released “L.K.U.T.” off the upcoming EP, City Light Glow, coming out in early July.
Watch the video to “L.K.U.T.” below and read a brief Q&A I did with lead vocalist/rapper Nick Pouponneau of Zoo Legacy.(more…)
While not easy to pinpoint, fans have described the band’s style as a mash-up of KiD CuDi and The xx. Zoo Legacy’s music isn’t characterized by any single tempo or song structure, but rather offers listeners variety. Whether an upbeat crowd pleaser, moody synth-driven rap, or thoughtful acoustic verse, the band’s music maintains a recognizable style that is unique to Zoo Legacy.
Although “How Much Love” is their newest song, here’s 5 tracks that came out over 6 months ago from Zoo Legacy that display their sound. Out All Night (live) by Zoo Legacy
Manhattan, NYC rapper Skizzy Mars is an interesting act. As an alternative rap artist, he brings a unique lyrical flow with laid back almost indie sounding instrumentals. Kind of reminds me of OnCue and Macklemore but Skizzy is doing his thing in New York City. I know we are a little late on Skizzy Mars but hopefully you haven’t heard these four dope songs from the musician whose influences range from Kanye West and Frank Ocean to Beirut and The Killers.
Here’s five of my favorites from Skizzy Mars. The songs are listed from newest to oldest but if you listen from his oldest song at the bottom to the newest song at the top, you will notice how the quality steadily improves, a big reason why I consider him a hidden gem and an artist that’s a must watch. I’m so glad I downloaded the SXSW 2011 Torrent because if I hadn’t, I might have never discovered the hottest hip-hop act from Australia, Bliss N Eso. They have a huge following outside the US, but I’m hoping to change that with some upbeat rock & roll/hip-hop tracks below.
Here’s an interesting and odd Michael Jackson tribute performed by Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy. He performs several classic MJ songs and looks somewhat weird at times singing the songs.
To bunch these songs together might not be fair, but if you like rap songs when they have a banging rock instrumental with some nice guitar riffs on it, then you came to the right post.
First song, credit P&P for finding the latest song from The Knux, “She’s So Up”. I love the instrumental, the rapping is really good and I can’t wait for what The Knux bring us next. The Knux – She’s So Up
Next we got Kyle Lucas who teamed up with STS and Pierce The Veil in “Picking Up The Pieces”. The flow is really good, an interesting sounding hook that sounds like a female Chester Bennington (of Linkin Park) and overall there is some good rock that drops in later in the song. STS/Pierce The Veil/Kyle Lucas – Picking Up The Pieces
Team Prolific came out with this song in January called, “Getting Down”, and it is by far the best song I have heard from them. Support them by purchasing it on iTunes. Prolific – Getting Down
Lastly, this song came out in 2010 and I didn’t feel right posting it because Ghostface Killah really isn’t an up-and coming artist which we mostly write about. However the song, which is off his latest album, Apollo Kid, has some of the best instrumentals plus Ghostface Killah and Black Thought straight up kill it with their lyricism and flow. Ghostface Killah – In Tha Park (Feat. Black Thought)

If there is an artist to get on board with that more people should know about, it’s Kokayi. Above is the music video for “Roxtar” which is one of my favorite songs from him and the dope single from his Robots & Dinosaurs album (Buy). Roxtar (right-click to download)
If you’re wondering who those animals in the background of the music video are, that’s The Rock-afire Explosion, an animatronic robot band that was widely popular in the 1980′s. You can find more about them here.
Don’t sleep on Kokayi, he’s got loads of potential. Currently he’s working with a jazz band and in plans on a national tour. Follow Kokayi on facebook and twitter.
Freestyle Friday number 53, the final one in a year-long saga from e-dubble of making some dope music and releasing it for free each Friday. I can’t believe an artist can release good quality music every week for a year straight, and he did it all for free!
In e-dubble’s final freestyle friday he samples a song of his from his album, Hip-Hop is Good, “Drinking With My Headphones On” but in the song he mentions it’s a bit of a mashup because he uses some of the vocals from another song off the album, “Robot Pop Songs“. Without further ado, e-dubble’s final (and longest) freestyle friday, “Robots Can’t Drink”. e-dubble – Robots Can’t Drink
HOWEVER, e-dubble is going to continue to release free music with his upcoming mixtape, Written Thursdays, dropping in February. For all e-dubble freestyle friday, click here and for all our posts on e-dubble, click here.
