Alternative Rock *The Monikers, Future Islands, New Manhattan, Jacuzzi Boys, Milagres

Alternative Rock *The Monikers, Future Islands, New Manhattan, Jacuzzi Boys, MilagresHere’s five alternative rock songs from relatively unknown but highly underrated up-and-coming bands.

First we go with The Monikers who reached out to us with their recently released EP, Taliesin West (DOWNLOAD). I was on the fence with the EP but found one I particularly enjoyed as it had this up-and-down sound with an attractive instrumental. You might not like the vocals but you gotta appreciate the instrumentals and how this song flows.

The Monikers – Opportunity
Next is a song by Future Islands which I found out about on the How To Make It In America season 2 mixtape. I really like how this song picks up, the vocals and overall sound of “Balance” is real futuristic yet has an 80′s synth influence behind it, finding a “Balance” of awesome sounds. Good pun?

Future Islands – Balance
New Manhattan has a stripped down garage rock sound that’s tight, streamlined and melodic. With “Come On” its real short and catchy song that reminds me of a mix between The Strokes and Two Door Cinema Club. All of New Manhattan’s original tracks can be found on bandcamp.

New Manhattan – Come On
Not sure how I found this but it sounds like some old school rock with a more upbeat wavey approach. Plus their name is dope, Jacuzzi Boys!
Jacuzzi Boys – “Cool Vapors” Download
Lastly comes Milagres, not sure where I found them but they have a more chill alternative rock sound with “Here To Stay”.

4 rock songs you never heard * Big Wave Riders, Fez, Hooded Fang & Toy Bombs

February 24th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Rock |

Above is a live performance of Big Wave Riders “It’s Funny Things Aren’t Gonna Change”. I found that group at TBIS but the other three I found on facebook when a friend was looking for new indie rock music. I joined in on the conversation and so did many other people. The bands that other people gave him, I looked them and found a few good ones I should let you know about.

Let me know which of these bands you like the most and I can direct you to more of their music! Anyways, I hope you like these songs and let your friends know any of the songs if you like it, I’m sure it will impress them.
Big Wave Riders – It’s Funny Things Aren’t Gonna Change (relaxed fun cruisin’ along the beach feel)
Fez – Low Light (awesome guitar, overall great instrumentals)
Hooded Fang – Promised Land (this is from 2009 but still very instersting)
Toy Bombs – Free (gritty, love how it’s kind of erractic, even a little southern rock style)

Hopefully these descriptions are accurate, they tend to be all over the place but nonetheless great music.

Above is Foster The People‘s greatest song to date, “Pumped Up Kicks”, arguably one of the best songs in the Summer. Whether it’s Summer time or your longing to get to the wonderful weather of Summer rather than the bad weather you might be in now.

“Pumped Up Kicks” is off the 3-song self-titled EP Foster The People released in late January through iTunes. Here’s the other two songs from the EP, which are just about as relaxing as “Pumped Up Kicks”.

Hidden Gem: Wolf Gang *rock with awesome piano

February 8th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Rock |

Continuing the trend of providing a dope rock song like I did yesterday with Polarsets, above is the music video for “Lions In Cages” from UK rock band Wolf Gang. They have some really great instrumentals and nice lyrics and I just love the use of the piano in their songs. This is for Jon, who was asking for some good indie rock music today, I hope this fits the bill!

Below is “Lions in Cages”, which just builds so well and all the instrumentals make for a wonderful rock track.
Lions In Cages
“The King and All Of His Men” is another track with excellent instrumentals, lovely harmonized vocals (which I love) and great pickup in the song. For fans of Wolf Gang, sorry I posted a dope song from 2009.

Lastly, “Back to Back” is a more soft rock song with interesting vocals.

New Kingdom – Naked Time EP

January 16th, 2011 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie, Rock |

20100623 NEWKINGDOM New Kingdom Naked Time EPMy cousin Kevin told me about New Kingdom a couple years ago as Oren Yoel, keyboardist of New Kingdom, produced most of Asher Roth’s debut album, Asleep In The Bread Aisle, which I thought was a dope album that deserved more praise.

While Oren produced hip-hop material, New Kingdom is an alternative rock band from LA. However each of the four band members bring their own styles/tastes and New Kingdom has sounds of soul, pop, funk and hard rock. Additionally, New Kingdom has shared the stage with Asher Roth, B.o.B and Janelle Monae.

Recently they released their first project, Naked Time EP (download), and while I didn’t expect much, I was really blown away with how catchy and fun their music has become. Below are two of my favorite’s off the 7-track EP.

Introducing The Jersey Shore Band

January 4th, 2011 by | Rock |

snooki pickles Introducing The Jersey Shore BandI caught your attention when I mentioned Jersey Shore didn’t I? This band is not actually called “The Jersey Shore Band”, they are The South Jersey Seashore Lifeguard Convention Band.

The instrumentals are dope, not too sure about the lyrics, but overall it’s a catchy song from the laid back rock band.
