Preview: FIDLAR, Cheatahs, Cherry Glazerr, Isaac Rother & the Phantoms at Echoplex 2/27

February 26th, 2014 by | Music Video, Rock |

Tomorrow night will be a crazy good punk rock show featuring LA’s very own FIDLAR and rising local artists Cherry Glazerr and Isaac Rother & the Phantoms. Also London-based four-piece Cheatahs has also been added to the bill.

The showcase was curated by new Los Angeles curator Amoeba Music and will feature the smooth stylings of LA-based quintet Isaac Rother & The Phantoms, who harken back to an era when rock ‘n roll was simple, fun and dangerous. Meanwhile, LA trio Cherry Glazerr combines lo-fi shoegaze elements with relentless driving grooves. Fiery alt-rockers Cheatahs will celebrate the recent release of their self-titled debut album, which VICE named February’s Best Album of the Month. They’ll join headliners FIDLAR, who have a reputation for being one of the most exciting punk bands on the planet. I’ve seen FIDLAR before and they know how to rock out with lots of energy, creating a really fun raucous environment.

The show is just $3 with RSVP to and $12 without RSVPing. So if you have any interest, make sure to RSVP, especially since it’s at one of the most underrated music venues in LA, Echoplex!

Below, watch FIDLAR’s latest video, “Cocaine”, starring comedian/actor Nick Offerman pissing everywhere around LA.

Review: Theophilus London at Amoeba Music Hollywood

July 21st, 2011 by | Concert/Festival Review, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, Reviews |

As you know, I have been looking very forward to Theophilus London‘s debut album Timez Are Weird These Days to drop and after it finally did, I heard of a free show that he was going to do at the infamous Amoeba record store in Hollywood and I had to attend. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in his performance for many reasons. He seemed way more into how he looked than the way he performed on stage. There were many times where you couldn’t even hear him rapping and singing. The instrumentals were way too loud that it covered up his voice. He appeared to be on lots of drugs because he could barely stand and speak. As a matter of fact there was a moment when he stopped a song half way through and started another one. There were also times when he just let his song play out and he just stood there. Pretty odd if you ask me.

Not all of it was his fault though. It was in a record store and not a legitimate music venue which means the sound quality and stage set up were not the best. Also he had been promoting his album all week on talk shows, music venues and many more which means he was likely very worn out and just needed a rest.

Besides all of this, I still really enjoy his album and think it will be very successful. I do feel that he needs to work on his stage presence a lot better though if he wants to remain in the music business for the long term. However, I guess I cannot be too upset considering it was a free show. Check out some of my favorite tracks that he performed. Enjoy!
