Preview: Brokechella 2014 *best LA value festival of 2014

April 4th, 2014 by | Concert/Festival Review, Guest Mix |

A festival I had an unforgettable experience at because of the art, the underrated music, the hospitality of event staffers and overall fun in such a local scene was Brokechella 2012. Last year I couldn’t attend because of Coachella and this year personally won’t be able to attend but that doesn’t mean I won’t have awesome friends covering the festival for me while I enjoy Coachella weekend 2.

For those in Southern California that can’t afford Coachella and are into more intimate festival scenes, then Brokechella is for you! With over 50 musicians performing and even comedians this year, it’s sure to be a festival worth going to. For $10, that’s less than 50 cents an artist and you know the people of cARTel know how to throw a super fly dope fun event for all. Now it’s in 4th year, Brokechella is sure to be one of the most talked about and underrated events of the season in Los Angeles and I highly recommend any music and/or comedy fan to check it out as you will have as great a time I did two years ago attending this Downtown LA event.

For more info on Brokechella, visit and purchase tickets here. Because I’m pretty pumped the event has continued for the 4th year in a row, I’ve created a playlist of 15 artists from Brokechella to look forward to including BtB favorites Azad RightWarm BrewVerbs and many more! (more…)

Azad Right – “It’s All Right”

March 2nd, 2012 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Azad Right. However, he’s back with “It’s All Right”, sampling the great beat of “Intro” by The XX. His rapping is solid and he does have some talent. I have seen him live and he does put on a great show and has a pretty big following. I loved how he put out this track sampling a great beat. I cannot wait to see what more original content he will produce. In the meantime enjoy!

Kosha Dillz, Azad Right, and Keith Masters live at The Viper Room

February 21st, 2012 by | Concert/Festival Review, Hip-Hop/Rap |

Last Wednesday, it’s was Oy Vey LA, post-valentine’s show from Team Kosha Dillz. There were many hip-hop acts, a couple I saw who I have nothing good to say, so I won’t say anything at all. However last Wednesday at The Viper Room, there were a few artists that were real good and I have written about below. (more…)

Azad Right – The Time Is Right (street album)

October 8th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B |

Los Angeles buzzmaker Azad Right has dropped his latest street album, The Time Is Right (DOWNLOAD) last month. The project features 15 original records (and two bonus cuts) from the underground up-and-comer. I think it’s a solid album, not many tracks that stand out or are very memorable but an enjoyable project to listen to nonetheless.

Here’s my three favorites from The Time Is Right.

Azad Right – “Stained” (featuring The Bridge)

September 14th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

What an awesome new track by Azad Right. This kid has really been maturing as an artist. I saw him perform back in June and knew he would continue to grow and develop. This song may be my favorite of his that I’ve heard so far. His rapping is once again great and The Bridge provides an amazing chorus. To top it all off Jonathan Marquez does an awesome job on the boards to create a great beat, making “Stained” an all around excellent song.

This track is the third and final single of his much anticipated next project The Time is Right which is slated to drop a week from today on September 21st. When Azad sent us this track earlier today he said:

“This is one of the many tracks on the mixtape that I tell a story, but the reason that we’re dropping it as the final single is because it’s very relevant to where I am currently in my life.”

I cannot wait for this new mixtape to drop. It will truly bring him to the next level. Enjoy!

Azad Right – “I’ll Be Around” (Video + Bonus Footage)

Download: Azad Right – “I’ll Be Around”

Azad Right’s video for his newest single “I’ll Be Around” which dropped last week has been getting lots of love on Youtube, approaching 20k hits. I’ll let him explain the rest:

“The video for my first single, I’ll Be Around, that we dropped last week is closing in on 20k hits.  Week 2 of our roll out plan for my mixtape, The Time Is Right (dropping later this month), consists of performance highlights and the second single from the mixtape.  I’ve attached footage of the sold out show on Sunday where I opened up for Jay Rock at his album release party (Kendrick Lamar also came through to do a few songs) at the Key Club in Hollywood.  In this clip, I tell a story of where I met Nas a couple weeks ago before his Rock The Bells show and actually spit a couple of verses for him.  Let me know what you think.”

Review: Tinie Tempah, iSquare & Azad Right at The Key Club

June 4th, 2011 by | Concert/Festival Review, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, Reviews |

Last night I saw a fun sample/remix filled show with four varied acts which consisted of Azad Right, Rob Roy (ugh), iSquare and the UK hip-hop superstar, Tinie Tempah. This show took place at The Key Club in Los Angeles. Here’s my review:

After getting to know Azad Right much better during our pre-performance interview before his 1st hip-hop show, I was really looking forward to hearing the new songs he mentioned he was going to try out on the crowd. Azad Right is a poet but you wouldn’t even know it… sorry I had to rhyme while I got your time.

Anyway, Azad Right was an excellent opener as he got the crowd fairly pumped with his variety of hip-hop from electronic and pop based beats to the Coldplay-sampled “Spiderwebs”. He got a few other artists in his team to get on stage which actually hurt his performance when two other artists/friends of his lip-synced and overall didn’t do anything on stage. However when he busted out an acapella freestyle for about 30 seconds with the DJ eventually dropping a dope beat without interrupting his freestyle, that’s when the crowd got pumped up again. Finishing with his hit song, “Spiderwebs” was a perfect choice as it got the crowd real pumped for the next act. This was my 2nd favorite song he performed (the freestyle was the best!).

Next came Rob Roy. As someone once told me, if you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all. I have absolutely nothing good to say about Rob Roy so let’s just move on.

iSquare hopped on stage next. This pop/hip-hop/R&B group is the 2nd coming of Black Eyed Peas. Seriously they know how to pump up a crowd! Even though all but 1 or 2 songs was a remix/sample to some popular artist like Journey, they still killed it by being fun, engaging and performing catchy tunes. The choreographed dance was a bit much as the stage didn’t seem to quite fit how good their dancing could have been. Overall iSquare is one talented group and it’s only a matter of time until Interscope Records invests some more money in marketing them to stardom. Below is “Hey Sexy Lady”, unfortunately their only memorable song but easily a mainstream radio hit.
iSquare Hey Sexy Lady
Lastly came Tinie Tempah. This show went quicker than I though so when he came on stage fairly early, I figured his set would be at least 30 minutes. However Tinie Tempah only gave us about 20 minutes of great music. I have too many favorites from Tinie and don’t remember a song I didn’t like as he got the crowd pumped with his electronic, pop and rock based hip-hop. Mostly I remember jumping up and down, bobbing my head and throwing my hands in the air to just about every song. Below is two of my favorites he performed, “Pass Out” and “Miami 2 Ibiza” which samples Swedish House Mafia. Plus I added a recent Tinie Tempah song that we haven’t blogged about yet and features Wiz Khalifa.
Tinie Tempah – Miami 2 Ibiza (feat. Swedish House Mafia)
Tinie Tempah – Til Im Gone feat Wiz Khalifa
Tinie Tempah – Pass Out
Overall I would give this show a 4 out of 5 as three out of four artists did a great job and the music kept getting better and better, minus act #2, Rob Roy. Azad Right showed he can rock a big stage and get the crowd pumped, iSquare showed that once they have more original music, they can easily headline venues like these, and Tinie Tempah brought the house down with his fun party hip-hop.

Hidden Gem: Azad Right

May 27th, 2011 by | Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap |

For a rapper with an interesting background, look no further than talented Los Angeles-based MC, Azad Right. This is a dude I should have jumped on when he hit us up on 4/20 and now over a month later we finally are getting him on the site. Here’s a brief bio on him:

Every once in awhile, someone enters the game with a new perspective which offers an interesting slant on the culture with an opportunity to influence the masses in a positive way. That claim has been made by many before in the past by many a rapper, but tell me if you’ve heard of this before: a Venice, California, son of a divorced-blind poet, classically trained pianist and violinist with a Bachelor’s degree of Iranian descent. Enter Azad Right.

Recently he dropped A Piece of Mine (DOWNLOAD), a free EP with many dope tracks that show true promise from Azad Right. However what caught many other bloggers and my ears was his music video “Spiderwebs”. Below I have included my favorites off the tape, which has exceptional production, top-notch lyricism and overall a must-download for the hip-hop/R&B peeps out there.

Azad Right – Player’s Club (Prod. by Jonathan Marquez)
Azad Right – I Want It All (Prod. by Professor O)
Watch “Spiderwebs” after the jump, which opens with a unique smooth catchy Coldplay sample before the beat and dope lyricism enter into the picture for a great song. (more…)
