Review: Carousel at Abbott Kinney Festival

October 8th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Before Bigs Exclusive, Concert/Festival Review, Electropop, synthpop |

Abbott Kinney Festival is an annual street fest in the Venice Beach area filled with hippies and young socialites. It was my first year going and after getting to see my favorite up-and-coming band out of Boston perform, Carousel, I walked up and down the closed off Abbott Kinney Boulevard and saw tons of herbal medicine booths, a “Vote for Rosanne Barr for President” as part of the Peace and Freedom (and Stoner) party, and tons of other people selling massages, clothing, artwork and other stuff you’d normally find along the Venice Beach boardwalk. There were also a ton of cops, a ton of hipster parents and tons of children.

However I came to Abbott Kinney Festival to see Carousel, an up-and-coming indie/electro-pop trio out of Boston who has a sound similar to Miike Snow and will become a huge mainstream act once they get in some more touring and shoot some videos for their songs, which are all great!

I caught most of Carousel‘s set which the crowd seemed to enjoy even if only a few knew their music and many enjoyed their “Dancing On My Own” Robyn cover (which I hope they release). Stream and download my two favorites I heard them perform.

Gentlemen Hall – Makes Me Feel Alive *flute pop

August 5th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Pop, Rock |

Finally some new music from Boston’s Gentlemen Hall, a group that Clinton Sparks is a big fan of and who I’ve grown to like more and more. “Makes Me Feel Alive” is a slowed-down pop/rock track that has a catchy chorus and interesting instrumentals throughout.

Stream and DOWNLOAD “Makes Me Feel Alive”.

Kyle Bent – “Hurry Up”

June 12th, 2012 by | Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

Kyle Bent is the definition of youngin on his grind. At the young age of 14, the high school freshman already has the skills of a veteran. Kyle Bent was born in Jamaica and later moved out to  Randolph MA, a suburb of Boston. The young emcee not only has some unbelievable talent but a fan base to support him. At first listen I was blown away, it’s kids like Kyle Bent  that keep the good name of Hip-hop alive.

Kyle  recently released his newest mixtape entitled “The Catalyst” which can be found on here) Kyle Bent also released visuals for his latest single “Hurry Up”. With Producerboyz producing the track and HLRboston making the visuals, you truly can’t go wrong. This kid definitely has a bright future ahead of him. Make sure to “like” his Facebook page and download “The Catalyst”.

“Boy Meets World” – Reese McFly

June 11th, 2012 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

Western MA emcee Reese McFly is truly a jack of all trades, this dude has some deep lyrics backed up with a smooth, on point flow. Reese recently released his first official album “Boy Meets World”. This album takes samples from the commonly loved 90’s television series “Boy Meets World”. From first hand experience I can say that Reese McFly can really keep a crowd going and is overall and magnificent performer and all around musician.

Reese is all about the fans, he loves the people who support his music and have assisted him on his journey to rise to the top.  Reese McFly has the potential and the motivation to make it somewhere in the world of Hip-hop. Be sure to check out his Facebook page and Youtube channel for the latest updates and videos! Reese’s album can be downloaded here. Enjoy the video for one of singles off of “Boy Meets World” entitled “Big”

Serge Didenko – MYD

May 24th, 2012 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

Moscow, Russia born, Boston, MA based Hip-hop artist/producer Serge Didenko has built a New England buzz with the release of his self produced, Clinton Sparks hosted mixtape “Bag of LaundryTo Ditch”. He has opened for the likes of J. Cole, Fabolous, Big Sean, Mac Miller, Machine Gun Kelly, and many more.

Serge recently brought us his video for his song entitled “MKD”. Crafted by UK producer Evian Christ, the beats eerie synths, slow tempo based drums, and low frequency bass drops collectively formulate a dark atmosphere that compliments Didenko’s lyrical recollection of his present day struggles with money, women, and escape of a violent past.

Hidden Gem: Shapes of Light *nasty but pure Electronic

April 21st, 2012 by | Dubstep, Electro, Electronic Dance Music, Hidden Gem |

We’ve been following Shapes of Light for over a year and have seen them progress their EDM sound from just doing remixes to some banging original material. With EDM, I’d rather let the music speak for itself, so below are three recent BANGER’s from SOL that you need to listen to. (more…)
