Haven’t busted out a cover song post in a while but here’s five dope covers ranging from gangsta rap to rock/pop to a classic by Simon & Garfunkel. Let us know which cover song you like the most!

Justin Baron is a newcomer that I found out about a week ago with his cover of OneRepublic‘s “Good Life”. I love that he takes it in a different direction with more emphasis on the piano and vocals.

A few months ago, LA indie/alternative band Local Natives performed one of Simon & Garfunkel‘s classics, “Cecilia”. I’m a huge fan of the original song as it is so when I heard the cover, it was hard to ignore how awesome it is to hear it covered. Loving the instrumentals and the group vocals.

Once again Collin McLoughlin continues with the cover song. He’s such a talented vocalist and solid composer with these covers yet and hearing him perform cover after cover makes me question his song-writing ability and originality. Collin if you are reading this, please release an original soon! Listen and download “Stereo Hearts mashup” which mixes “Lazy” by Bruno Mars and “Stereo Hearts” by Gym Class Hereos. 5-star!

So this cover is a year old but I only heard it within the last couple months. Hard to deny Mumford & Sons being one of the best folk rock bands today and Vampire Weekend being equally talented in whatever genre you want to stick them in. Loving the banjo and folk rock guitars in the song plus the vocals stand out with Marcus Mumford’s vocals. Download

Lastly my favorite electronic hip-hop duo King Fantastic put this song out a while ago covering Ice T with “Colors”. It only popped up on soundcloud a month ago and I had no doubt in my mind I would blog about this with some other dope covers. This is the only hip-hop song in the post, loving the instrumentals, rapping is dope, overall a quality song if you are into gangsta rap and/or like the electronic.

If you want a better idea how talented Justin Baron is with his “Good Life” cover, check out the youtube video after the jump and watch his “Cooler Than Me” Mike Posner cover too!

Theo Martins – The Spotlight x 2 older faves x new music video

April 10th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

When Theo Martins released “The Spotlight” recently, I knew had to jump on listening to this. Once again Theo Martins thrives sampling a variety of non-hip-hop tracks and bringing this indie hip-hop/pop to the song he samples.

Lately I have noticed a more electro/hip-hop feel with his music which I like a lot since he is working towards what the music industry’s mainstream sound is evolving into; more upbeat dance club instrumentals.

In “The Spotlight” he goes in a more electro synth instrumentals with the Class Actress sample. Love the instrumentals, rapping over it is cooler than Theophilus London which he reminds me of in this song but this is a bit more alternative with more mainstream rapping.
Theo Martins – The Spotlight ft. Class Actress

Below listen and download two older favorites of mine from Theo Martins, one which is a remix to a remix that includes the likes of Passion Pit and Bruno Mars and the other more of an indie popish song with some hip-hop that samples Wakey!Wakey! Also new music below! (more…)

time for some Bruno Mars “Grenade” remixes

February 13th, 2011 by | Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, Remix |

In the last couple weeks I have heard several remixes to the latest single from Bruno Mars, “Grenade”. From Lil Wayne to Passion Pit, the remixes have been pretty good and I felt it’s time to let you hear a few.

songs that remix mainstream hits

February 9th, 2011 by | Remix |

Above is a video of Prince kicking Kim Kardashian off the stage because she wouldn’t dance. I love the video because I hate Kim Kardashian and I’m glad somebody kicked her off the stage, especially someone as awesome as Prince.

The remixes below are to some mainstream hits. Some sound very different while others have different instrumentals or are at a different pace or genre to make it different. Enjoy!

Prince of Ballard mixes it to give this song a different feel with the piano instrumentals. Must listen!
Rick Ross – Hustlin’ (Prince of Ballard Remix)
Bei Maejor jumps on this Villains remix of “Nothin’ On You” to actually improve the song over the radio played out version we have all started not liking.

Roofeo teams up with Ninjasonik to remix Kanye West’s single, “Power”. If you like the remix, download Ninjasonik’s latest mixtape, When Anxiety Attacks, off their website.

Lastly, Travis Barker remixed Jay-Z & Kanye West’s smash single, “H.A.M.”. The remix is one of the latest leaks off Travis Barker and DJ Whoo Kid’s upcoming album, Let The Drummer Get Wicked.

Bruno Mars – Killa On The Run x Mama’s Worst Nightmare

Two new Bruno Mars jams. “Mama’s Worst Nightmare” has an 80’s feel to it with some cool synth pop.

“Killa On The Run” has a more rock beat with a hip-hop/R&B feel.

PJ Simas – Bruno Mars Medley

October 19th, 2010 by | Mashup, Pop, Remix |

PJ Simas & Cato Webb cover and mashup up three songs off of Bruno Mars’ “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” which are “Grenade,” “Liquor Store Blues,” and “The Lazy Song.” He does a great job on mixing these together and creating a solid flow. This is the 5th song released off of PJ’s Back 2 School Remix series.
