About 10 days ago, I witnessed Gold Fields and Capital Cities perform a free live performance put together by Pandora next to the Staples Center in LA Live. They closed off the street for the performances of these two up-and-coming electronic pop acts and overall they both killed it with high energy performances, getting the crowd to dance and sometimes sing along although I felt most of the people there only knew one song, “Safe & Sound”. Unfortunately, there could have been way more music fans at this show but Pandora and LA Live didn’t advertise this free show, which was actually a show to help support the NCAA March Madness tournament.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that Capital Cities performed three amazing covers too: Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares”, Madonna‘s “Holiday” and the Bee Gees “Stayin’ Alive”. I had hadn’t heard the Bee Gees cover but when I did, I was ecstatic and really loved how they added this electronic element while keeping everybody dancing to the catching disco tune.
I had a great time and below are two of my favorite songs performed.
The picture at the top of the post is the horn player from Capital Cities, who decided to jump off stage into the crowd during “Safe & Sound”, real incredible!
Last Friday night I saw indie dance pop band Capital Cities perform their last LA show for a long time as they prepare to hit the studio to record their next album. It was a packed audience with lots of passionate fans who sang along to most of Capital Cities releases and while this was my 3rd time seeing them live, they continued to impress with a more upbeat slightly improved set list, more dancing on stage among the founding duo of the band with a uniform clothing style of all band members wearing gold/yellow jackets.
It felt almost magical seeing them live as most of the audience and I knew this would be Capital Cities last Los Angeles show for the year and maybe the next several months. I loved the show because it was the fans way of getting to celebrate Capital Cities recent signing under the Capital Records imprint.
Big things continue to happen for Capital Cities and if you haven’t seen them live, I suggest you try to do so soon before they start selling out arenas all over the world.
Here’s a great why you should see them live: “Safe & Sound”.
A couple Sunday’s ago, I attended Pacific Festival 2012: The Dunes, featuring Mayer Hawthorne, Poolside, Bag Raiders, Capital Cities and much much more vibe out at the Newport Beach Marina. This was my 2nd time attending Pacific Festival and this year they toned it down on worldwide acts (last year Snoop Dogg, Cut Copy, Steve Aoki and Calvin Harris were some notable favorites) but they moved the location away from an isolated area (from Oak Canyon Ranch to Newport Beach) and really created this unique festival vibe on a beach.
Last Sunday, we had the luxury of attending the Pacific Festival at Newport Dunes. This event was very spread out on a beautiful resort with four different stages and a great beach vibe. It was the first year in this part of Newport Beach but certainly not the last. On top of it all, it was an extremely beautiful day. Perfect for an end of the summer fiesta!
The Pacific Festival had a much different atmosphere than your typical music festival (no drug use, somewhat conservative, kind of quiet, reserved etc.). Regardless, it was truly a great experience.
My favorite acts of the day were definitely Capital Cities, Mayer Hawthorne, Wildcat! Wildcat!, Steed Lord, American Royalty and Poolside many more. Take a listen to the best song of each performer’s set. Enjoy!
Capital Cities – “Safe and Sound”:
Mayer Hawthorne – “Held The Hand”:
Wildcat! Wildcat! – “Mr. Quiche”:
SteedLord – “Bed of Needles”:
American Royalty – “Matchstick”:
Poolside – “Take Me Home:”
Southern California’s Pacific Festival: The Dunes 2012 is quickly approaching and I thought I would provide some details into one of the most underrated festivals in California. Not only is there a great variety of music from retro soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne to daytime disco duo Poolside to probably the best electro-dance pop/rock band ever, Capital Cities, this is a festival you don’t want to miss on Sunday September 2! This festival will be set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean at The Dunes in Newport Beach with DJ sets from plenty of up-and-comers you need to see live including Bag Raiders, Goldroom andMiami Horror to name a few.
The best way for me to express my excitement for Pacific Festival (which we reviewed last year), is to once again provide the “unofficial” Pacific Festival 2012 mixtape, which features 15 of my favorite songs from the acts performing at this year’s festival. Stream the 15-track mix below as well as the official “Pacific Festival: The Dunes 2012” mix. Purchase tickets here and visit PacificFestival.com for more info on this must-see event that added the people behind Identity Festival to make this year’s festival even more of a rager! (more…)
Working on covers is a sacred exercise for Capital Cities. They meticulously pick songs that they love and then explore them until new harmonic and rhythmic ideas emerge, hopefully bringing a freshness to a timeless melody and lyric.
With “Nothing Compares 2 U”, Capital Cities has this smooth electro pop/rock vibe that anybody can like. It’s no wonder Perez Hilton considers these dudes the “best band in Los Angeles”!

Ernest Saint Laurent is a mysterious character. We know he’s a French musician that has worked with Royksopp, The Avalanches and Ian Pooley. Now we can add Capital Cities to the list. They recently remixed ‘Offering,’ a moody experimental love song featuring the sultry voice of Tatiana Heintz. The original appears on his latest album Rollercoaster.
Stream the remix below and buy it on iTunes.
