February 22nd, 2012 by | Chill/Jam/Reggae, Hip-Hop/Rap |

New song and video from chill-hop duo Aer. The latest song, “Smoove Bruh”, produced by MattMiGGZ, has a jazz and chill-hip hop kind of feel. If your into that chilled out hip-hop or just enjoy everything Aer is putting out, like myself, then you will really dig this.

Listen and download “Smoove Bruh”.

Guest Mixes by Dave and Carter of Aer

August 5th, 2011 by | Before Bigs Exclusive, Guest Mix, Hip-Hop/Rap |

If you’re a frequent Before the Bigs reader, you’ve heard a lot of awesome music coming from up-and-coming hip-hop duo Aer. Their laid-back style is reminiscent of bands like Sublime and Pepper, and they’ve been making some major moves around the blogosphere in the past couple of months. If you haven’t given these guys a chance, check out our posts about their music here.

Right in time for the weekend, Aer, consisting of Dave (pictured left) and Carter (pictured right), gave us a sneak peak into their itunes by each creating chilled-out playlists in honor of the end of summer. Each playlist gives a look into these guys’ influences and what has brought them to create their own mellow style. The playlists are pretty different, but each one is perfect for posting up by a pool, grilling, and enjoying the last few weeks of summer. Check out the playlists after the jump:

Aer – Slow Down (Ft. June)

July 19th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

Hip-hop duo Aer is back with a new single, “Slow Down.” The beat, produced by MattMiGGZ is super chilled out and the rapping is super smooth throughout. If you do a quick google search, you’ll see that Aer has been getting mad love from some awesome blogs including ThisSongIsSick and 2DopeBoyz. I think this song shows a serious progression since their mixtape The Reach, and I am seriously looking forward to hear some new music from these guys.

Radical Something – Long Hair, Don’t Care

July 13th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Chill/Jam/Reggae, Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix |

Radical Something, AKA the duo of rapper Loggy and silky smooth singer Josh Cocktail just dropped their latest single, the summertime anthem “Long Hair, Don’t Care.” This track has a more rock feel, but the dudes kill it with the track that’s perfect for an outdoor summertime party on the beach…or something.

Just imagine Josh Cocktail riding in the car with the windows down and his glorious mane blowing in the wind. Delightful. Get on twitter and follow Radical Something and the individual members Loggy and Josh Cocktail and support the movement. These dudes have been killing it all summer, and I’m excited to see what else they come up with.

Curren$y – She Don’t Want a Man (Video)

June 23rd, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

Curren$y just dropped the video for “She Don’t Want a Man” off his upcoming album Weekend at Burnie’s. I think the lesson to be gained from the video is that the way to understand women is to get super high, keep it chill, and they’ll leave their significant others to have sex with you. It’s kind of like a beer commercial but with weed. Enjoy, and roll one up for the album drop next Tuesday.

Kidz in the Hall – Semester Abroad (Mixtape)

June 5th, 2011 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Hip-Hop/Rap |

I know I’m a little late to the party on this one, but the newest Kidz in the Hall mixtape is too good not to post. I had written off Kidz in the Hall a while ago, but since they started a song a week thing a few months ago, they’ve been making some seriously sick music. Their mixtape Semester Abroad is super chill from top to bottom, featuring some really nice features from Curren$y, Smoke DZA, and more of your favorite stoner rappers. This is a must download. Get it.

Hidden Gem: The Heavy Pets *Crunchy Jam Shreddage

June 3rd, 2011 by | Hidden Gem, Rock |

The Heavy Pets are a major up-and-coming jam band out of New York by way of South Florida. I know when a lot of people think of jam bands, they think of noodling and uninteresting songs that linger on for far too long. Well, you wont find any of that with the Heavy Pets.

The Heavy Pets have released 2 full length CDs along with an EP, full of tight, awesome songs. Being from Florida, their songs have a little reggae, chilled out influence, and of course some ol’ fashion White Boy funk. With a lot of jam bands, people wont listen to their studio CDs, because these bands aren’t as skilled at songwriting as they are at jamming. However, the Heavy Pets do both very well. Listening to their studio stuff provides a different, yet equally awesome experience compared to seeing them live.

The Pets are still touring and playing non-stop shows supporting their latest, self-titled album. In a studio setting, their songs are tight and catchy, and live, these dudes can take any song and extend it for as long as they want without getting boring. The Pets are so skilled at taking their jams through slow methodical build-ups, epic peaks, and back to the beginning before you even realize what happened. Check out some of my favorites of theirs below:

The Heavy Pets – “Jackie Bones”

The Heavy Pets – “Operation of Flight”

Follow the Heavy Pets on Twitter and Facebook and when these guys come to your city, do yourself a favor and go see them. Their shows are epic. Also, if you like what you hear, support the Pets by buying their self-titled album, or earlier double-album Whale on itunes.

Hi-Rez – No Place Like Home (Video)

June 1st, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

South Florida rapper, Hi-Rez made a deal that when his last video hit 50,000 views, he would drop another one. He said on Twitter that he thought it would take a month or maybe more, but he accomplished the goal in a little over a week. Those are some major stats for this up-and-comer from South Florida. With the hype building, Hi-Rez went ahead and released his latest video for “No Place Like Home.” Check it out after the jump.

Huey Mack – Freshman 15 (Mixtape)

May 30th, 2011 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Hip-Hop/Rap |

The other day, Huey Mack released his latest mixtape, Freshman 15. This is my first real listen to Huey, and I have to say, I was really impressed. His sound is real polished, his flows are tight, and the beats are awesome. Producers for the tape include Big Jerm, Brenton Duvall, and the Xtraordinary Gentleman, meaning that there is top notch production throughout the tape.

I’m not going to say Huey isn’t cliche “frat rap” or whatever you want to call it, but Freshman 15 is super chill for the most part, but also includes some more upbeat party jams. My favorites from the tape are:

Huey Mack – “Syllabus Week”

Huey Mack – “Looking at the Sky”

Download Freshman 15 here and follow Huey on Twitter and Facebook.

Star Slinger – Rogue Cho Pa (EP)

May 29th, 2011 by | Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix |

Star Slinger, a producer/DJ out of the UK, makes a new breed of hip-hop/electronic/dance jams. His music is super funky, full of tons of layers and nuances, and uses samples in ways no one else is. His music will get you dancing, his music will get your head nodding, and his music is definitely a must listen.

He recently dropped the Rogue Cho Pa EP, which is apparently full of stuff Star Slinger had “left lying around.” If the stuff that he has lying around is this awesome, I can’t wait to hear what else he has. The 6 song EP takes you on a journey through chilled out, down-tempo stuff, to more upbeat dance-party jams. The tracks are instrumental for the post part, with samples thrown in, but the songs are so interesting that they don’t feel like instrumentals.

Follow Star Slinger on Twitter and Facebook, and head over to his soundcloud where he has tons of other instrumentals and sick remixes available for free download.

Because we love Childish Gambino so much on this blog, check out Star Slinger’s remix to “Freaks and Geeks”
