Download: Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees covered by Jhameel

john travolta 600x600 Download: Stayin Alive by the Bee Gees covered by JhameelJhameel recently posted a cover of his absolute favorite song, the Bee Gee’s Stayin’ Alive. I like the dark, moody atmosphere he put on this one, it digs into a more desperate interpretation of the words ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and modernizes the song from it’s 70′s recession roots and puts into a new 2012 recession context.

Capital Cities cover ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’

Capital Cities cover Nothing Compares 2 UWorking on covers is a sacred exercise for Capital Cities. They meticulously pick songs that they love and then explore them until new harmonic and rhythmic ideas emerge, hopefully bringing a freshness to a timeless melody and lyric.

With “Nothing Compares 2 U”, Capital Cities has this smooth electro pop/rock vibe that anybody can like. It’s no wonder Perez Hilton considers these dudes the “best band in Los Angeles”!

Stream and download “Nothing Compares 2 U” below.

Covers from Manicanparty, Minus Ned and Strange Talk

June 27th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video, Pop, Rock |

Covers from Manicanparty, Minus Ned and Strange TalkThree covers from three very different electric sounding music groups that everybody needs to follow. One group I’ve been a huge fan since 2010, (Strange Talk), another I’ve been a fan of since early this year (Manicanparty), and another I became a fan of today (Minus Ned).

Watch/listen to the three cover songs below in which Manicanparty covers Miike Snow, Minus Ned covers Talking Heads and Strange Talk covers The Police, all groups I absolutely dig covered by three acts I’m loving lately. (more…)

Hidden Gem: Superhumanoids *alternative pop

May 13th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Music Video, Pop |

superhumanoids vml polaroid 600x471 Hidden Gem: Superhumanoids *alternative popI recently came across a fantastic LA based band called Superhumanoids. These guys do a great job of creating unique tunes blending indie rock, dream pop, and electronic sounds that are relaxing and even give the listener a touch of nostalgia. I was obviously stoked to see they’re currently touring with another awesome LA band, Active Child. View the rest of the tour schedule here.

Right now I’m really digging the track “Geri” off their upcoming LP, Exhibitionists. Listen and download that plus their most recent track, “Too Young For Love”.

I also love their music video “Mikelah”, which you should view below. (more…)

DWNTWN 324x218 DWNTWN Im On Fire *Bruce Springsteen Cover

One of my favorite electro-pop duos, DWNTWN, has created a cover to Bruce Springsteen’s hit “I’m On Fire”. I have grown very fond of this group over the last few months and really appreciate how they are able to recreate a classic into their own style so successfully. Expect big things from DWNTWN throughout the rest of this year and beyond!

The Knocks – Midnight City ft. Mandy Lee (M83 Cover) *Video+mp3

The Knocks Midnight City ft. Mandy Lee (M83 Cover) *Video+mp3So here’s an interesting cover from one of my favorite music duos, The Knocks. They cover M83‘s hit song “Midnight City”  and get Mandy Lee on some vocals. I’m not sure if I like the vocals on this song but I really dig the production as it doesn’t sound so electronic and is more natural with the piano’s influence in the song.

Update: The Knocks just dropped the music video to their cover of “Midnight City”. Watch it below!

Video: Taylor Berrett & The Wild Cover The Black Keys

February 3rd, 2012 by | Music Video, Rock |

Black Keys El Camino kicks into high gear BBM14EH x large Video: Taylor Berrett & The Wild Cover The Black KeysWith the extensive accessibility of the internet, it isn’t surprising that not even two months passes before tracks from The Black Keys latest album El Camino are covered.  Lucky for us, there is talent beyond the mainstream and frankly, it ain’t so bad.

Taylor Berrett‘s style walks a line between John Mayor and Justin Timberlake circa bringing sexy back. This characteristic bodes well for his cover of “Lonely Boy,” however, his staccato and raspy style are a regular trait for the indie/blues rock genre The Black Keys fall into.

New Zealand’s rap-rock trio, The Wild, capture the intimacy and emotion of “Little Black Submarines” that fits the general bluesy demeanor of the original. They don’t go so far as to imitate the Dan Auerbach’s rocking guitar solo but this decision gives their rendition more strength in the tracks’ delicacy. Stream and download below!

Video: Brian Lopez covers “The Killing Moon”

January 31st, 2012 by | Music Video, Rock |

Brian Rialto theatre 1275600818 600x475 Video: Brian Lopez covers The Killing MoonBrian Lopez may be an unfamiliar name but he hits familiar points that will draw you close – looks like Albert Hammond Jr. (The Strokes), has the same delicate voice as Damien Rice and strums like the great Jeff Buckley. Based in Tuscon, Arizona, Brian presents a desert-noir, psych rock vibe and shakes things up with a couple Spanish-language tracks.

His full-length, Ultra, is set for release on March 6.  Until then, go to his website for a free download of “Leda Atomica.” Stream samples of his upcoming album, Ultra, below.

Check out his cover of “The Killing Moon,” not a crazy divergence from Echo & The Bunnymen‘s original in 1984 but nothing to be disappointed about either! (more…)
