We attended Day 3 and Day 4 of Filter Magazine’s Culture Collide Festival. Below is my Day 4 review featuring The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Hypernova and Datarock.

We got there at about 5:45 and immediately walked around and just took in all the stuff going on, which including trying out the video game, Everybody Dance, on PS3, tons of artwork and three different stages, two outside which were for the larger acts and one on the inside for more of the alternative smaller acts.

The first artist we took in was Danish pop band The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. They have this retro pop sound with real interesting vocals from lead singer Mette Lindberg. I really enjoyed their energy, the variety of instruments used and how they have this retro pop sound yet it sounds new and fresh. Here’s my two favorites, “Major” and “Around The Bend”.

Next came Clap Your Hands Say Yeah which is probably the coolest and nerdiest name for a band. They have great energy and as most of the members are multi-instrumentalist’s, its real cool watching several of them continuously switching instruments from keyboard to guitar to banging on a drum and so forth. At a couple points they did get the audience to clap their hands at which point I had to say “yeah” while I was clapping along. Here’s my two favorites, “Maniac” and “The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth”.

Next we stopped briefly inside for New York-based Iranian rockers Hypernova. I only heard a couple songs but was real intrigued as they had this catchy rock tune and although it was crowded and not the most enjoyable atmosphere to be at for more than five minutes, I enjoyed the five minutes I got to listen to them. Here’s the song I liked the most from Hypernova, “Fairy Tales”.

The last act I saw on the final day of Culture Collide Festival was Datarock who were in my top 2 for the day with The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. Norway’s Datarock have an indie electro-pop sound that just makes you want to dance, which is what they got most of the crowd doing, either dancing or cheering for more. Their sound is infectious and Datarock has a good persona with all the members of the band wearing flashing red blazers/jumpsuits. I liked almost every song I heard from them but my three favorites were “Catcher In The Rye”, “California” and “Fa-Fa-Fa”.

Last weekend featured the 2nd annual Culture Collide festival, a 4-day event in Los Angeles presented by Filter Magazine. I went on Saturday and Sunday and it was a lot of fun.  Multiple venues such as Echoplex, Taix, The Echo, ReFORM, and many more featured various acts from all over the world which were all very enjoyable to listen to. On Saturday I saw Classixx, DJ Harvey, and CSS perform and wow did they impress.

Classixx is an electronic duo from Los Angeles.  They are absolute beasts and have a very bright future ahead of them. Their laid back and unique style make for great music live and in the headphones. The two remix a lot of great tracks adding in some of their original work creating great vibes with their beats as well as very upbeat and heaving dancing tracks. Check out two of my favorite of theirs below.

DJ Harvey from Cambridge, England has been very influential with disco house all over the world for many years. This guy is a very old school electronic music man but in a good way. He loves playing super long sets and I was extremely impressed by his energy and great original tracks. He still continues to sell out shows in different continents and for good reason. His chill/laid back vibes with his energetic style equals a great electronic sound. Check out what I’m talking about below with a couple awesome tracks by him.

CSS which is an abbreviation of Cansei de Ser Sexy is a rock band who comes from Sao Paulo, Brazil. They were the headliners of this show and absolutely killed their set. In a packed EchoPlex venue they lit it up with their energy and pizazz. The have a great alternative rock/pop sound with Brazilian flavor which is why it is no surprise that they have had much success in the United States as well as all over the world. My two favorite tracks  by them are below.
