Bipf9FdCIAA1zeV 458x600 Review: Das Tapes live at The Spare Room, Roosevelt HotelLast Thursday, The Burning Ear put together a fantastic free show with Los Angeles funky brother duo Das Tapes bringing their dance vibes to The Spare Room at The Roosevelt Hotel for Glenn Close’s birthday. It was a fun night and one of the best free shows I’ve been to since Das Tapes and the audience not only sang happy birthday to Glenn Close while she was bowling nearby the stage, but I met actor Michael Pena and told him how I enjoyed his movies, he said thanks and gave me a bro hug, it was awesome! Yet the best part of the evening was hearing Das Tapes perform their new jam, “Fetish” which is an absolute hit that sounds like a mix of ClassixxPoolsideToro Y Moi and Chromeo.

L.A.M.P., A Party With A Cool Set Up But Lost Potential

Puzl L.A.M.P., A Party With A Cool Set Up But Lost Potential

A sudden decision last Friday night brought me to a warehouse party just past Downtown LA called L.A.M.P. It was put on by PUZL clothing and even though the set up and performers were amazing, overall I was very disappointed.

We were on the list and at first they refused to let us in and demanded we pay $20! Are you kidding me?!?! We eventually got in with no charge to find a large, empty warehouse space with about 30 dudes and 10 girls (maybe). Yeah it was that bad of a ratio.

The warehouse set up was incredible though. It was sheik, trendy and not at all what I expected before arriving. It is clearly used for various types of events such as art galleries, photo sessions, etc. It had a staircase leading up to a nice kitchen and livingro0m area with a bathroom as well. An attractive girl lived in a room downstairs. This place was one of those, “you have to see it to know exactly what I am talking about” kind of thing.

We made the most of our experience however. We enjoyed a couple of drinks and listened to some great tunes. When we arrived, Special Blend of Audible Mainframe was spinning some great chill hip-hop tunes. Shortly after his set electro-pop duo Das Tapes rocked out and with style too. We have seen them on multiple occasions and they always know how to get a party started. Finally, before we decided to call it a night, PZB came on to continue the energetic vibes with a killer set. Below are my favorite tracks by each performer.

DJ Special Blend (DJSB) – “Play It Cool”

Das Tapes – “Black Ferrari”

DJ PZB – “Sophie loves Acid”

The party wasn’t all bad but it could have been so much better. Usually at warehouse parties there are more activities to do than just watch live music. There is typically things like face painting, a photo booth, arcade games… at least that’s what I enjoyed at the last warehouse party I attended, Brokechella.

Instead there was just some mediocre art work on the walls and a few clothing items from PUZL displayed. It was very easy to get bored in between musical sets.

The music was great though. Hopefully the next one won’t be as much of a disappointment.

Review: Brokechella 2012

IMG 92061 600x263 Review: Brokechella 2012[Photo credit: Justin Baker]

Deep in the monotonous cracks of downtown LA, the 2nd-annual edition of Brokechella announced itself with a homemade cardboard & Christmas lights “Brokechella” sign. So appropriately designed, even a 2Pac mural greeted you upon entrance! A Jarritos truck garnished the DJ stage outside while the main stage faced a shipwreck themed bar in the quaint Six01 Studios. The detailed decor made it more like LowerMiddleClass-Chella than Broke but that just made the aesthetic of the event that much more pleasurable and entertaining. Aside from the eye-catching gold wall entrance art, the glam continued to the art cage, where cinder block stairs led you to an excitable tutu-wearing face paint artist and the flowery photo booth area, carefully designed by Amanda Wallace.

, Goodies from sponsors like Popchips and Activate Water made early-comers feel even better about the “Afternoon Buzz” bar special while Starry Kitchen and Mucho Perro satisfied the hungry.

The music was a blast, despite the occasional blown fuse that simply became a great Brokechella goer inside joke, featuring familiar acts including Infantree, Rumspringa and major crowd-pleaser, Das Tapes. Lesser knowns, such as The Dead Ships, rocked the house while DJ’s like Robin People spun tracks under a mesmerizing LED light board.

Brokechella’s rebuttal to Coachella’s hologram Tupac? Their very own custom-made Tupac pinata – now that’s real 3D! All in all, your 5 bucks was well spent. Joey Stevens of Rumspringa even commented to the crowd, “This is a really well put-together event, which is ironic.”

No doubt, Brokechella is the place to be, whether you’re too broke for Coachella or can only survive one desert weekend!

Editor’s Note: What I loved most about the event besides the awesome up-and-coming musicians (Das Tapes especially), was the interactive art mural, unlimited drinks as lovable VIPs, and just meeting awesome nice people! By the way, Daren Criss from GLEE was apparently in attendance as was a spongebob squarepants pinata. There was never a moment during the evening that I didn’t enjoy an artist’s music!

Shout out to cARTel who put the event together and sent us some of the photos you saw above. “Like” us on facebook and follow on twitter/instragram (@BeforeBigs) for more pictures from Brokechella.

Review: Weapons of Audio, Das Tapes at Hotel Cafe

December 7th, 2011 by | Concert/Festival Review |

Review: Weapons of Audio, Das Tapes at Hotel CafeThis was one of those shows where the sound engineer was a big reason why it became a bust. However it was Weapons of Audio‘s last show in LA before they returned home to Atlanta and I discovered another dynamic brother duo that night in Das Tapes. Two sets of brothers performed in Hotel Cafe in Hollywood on November 27, and even though they didn’t sound too great because of the venue’s sound person, they still proved why they are two legit bands to keep an eye on.

First Weapons of Audio performed and rocked the stage even though Jeremy on guitar sometimes couldn’t be heard with his guitar and only his vocals. Their smash hit, “Night Light” got a little ruined because of the sound engineer but it’s still my favorite song. However keep an eye out for a new song I just heard from the band called “Soak Up The Sun”, its a song that will instantly get in the top 10 on Hypem and hipsters and indie/alternative rock/pop fans will rejoice as the synthesized soul duo WOA continually shows they can expand their sound and further make themselves stand out from the rest. Here’s my favorite song, “Night Light”.

Lastly I heard almost all of Das Tapes set. The vocals didn’t sound the best live and I believe this is a band that needs to put on a spectacular show like Empire of the Sun or Ghostland Observatory to mask their synthesized vocals and all the other various noises they make. This is a brother duo that mixes electronic music with various other banging elements. If you see them perform live, you will be intrigued and possibly seek out their music to download. They are fairly new to the scene, so with time, these guys will only get better and will be headlining shows across the country in 2-3 years. Here’s my favorite from Das Tapes, “Black Ferrari”, and another hit I love, “Dynomite”.
