Review: Empire of the Sun, Mayer Hawthorne & DJ Ivy at Club Nokia

October 17th, 2011 by | Before Bigs Exclusive, Concert/Festival Review, Reviews |

Last night I saw DJ Ivy, Mayer Hawthorne and Empire of the Sun at Club Nokia in Downtown LA. It was a fantastic show as I got to meet the members of Empire of the Sun, got drink tickets and got to witness an awesome performance from three rising acts; plus it was all FREE!

After meeting Empire of the Sun and getting their autographs, we then got a coupe of free drink tickets and headed over to the VIP bar where we were introduced to DJ Ivy. Although she doesn’t have any original music, she knows how to start the party with all the catchy music she was bumping in her DJ set. Check out the sexy DJ’s party mixes on her website.

Some of his songs were snoozers with how slow the pace of the songs were. However more often than not, his feel-good music was smooth yet fun for an enjoyable sound. Below are my two favorite songs, “Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin’” and “Can’t Stop”.

With a futuristic grandiose opening and performance, these guys were meant to be headliners! I loved almost every song and found it easier to figure out the couple songs I didn’t like than the many I did really like. My three favorites were the opening song, “Standing on the Shore”, “We Are The People” and the last song “Walking On A Dream” which was amazing.

Hidden Gem: Remix Artist Collective (RAC)

RAC 300x139 Hidden Gem: Remix Artist Collective (RAC)RAC which stands for Remix Artist Collective, is a group of international producers who create re-interpretative rock/electronic/dance remixes for musical artists. They strive to stay away from “club” type remixes and to bring something new and different to the song.

I like many of their remixes and have included five of my favorites that we haven’t blogged about yet.
Foster The People – Houdini (RAC Mix)
Two Door Cinema Club – Something Good Can Work (RAC Mix)
Phoenix – Armistice (RAC Mix)
Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream (RAC Mix)
Penguin Prison – Worse It Gets (RAC Mix)

Great songs REMIXED pt.1 *Passion Pit, Matt & Kim, Foster the People and more!

May 14th, 2011 by | Remix |

I love the original to the above video and I love the remix even more, already watching it at least 8-10 times.

Anyways, best way to help lessen the many remixes/mashups I need to blog about, here’s five songs I really love that have been remixed. In some cases the original is better but other cases, the remix does add something special the original might lack. This is pt. 1 because all these remixes are kind of old and should have been blogged about at least 2 months ago.

First we got my all-time favorite Empire of the Sun track, “Walking on a Dream”, remixed by Kids At The Bar. Love how the hand-clap they throw in eventually get’s way more electronic and complex as the song progresses.
Empire of the Sun – Walking On A Dream (Kids At The Bar Remix)
Next Borgore remixes Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead”, slowing the pace down a bit and overall making for a chill remix with cool electro and some subtle dubstep that isn’t overbearing to the beauty of Passion Pit‘s sound… sorry I love Passion Pit so much, somebody take me to see them live.

Foster the People came out with “Pumped Up Kicks” a long time ago yet the song suddenly gets mainstream radio play this year. Either way, MNDR decided to do a remix on it, adding some cool 80′s type instrumentals and keeping the vocals fairly intact for a solid remix.

I know remixes of Matt & Kim have gotten really old, and maybe the remixes continue to come out because all of us are dying to hear new music from them now if we haven’t seen them live. Either way, well done remix by Rusty Lazer & JJ Marshall who have some Big Freedia rapping too. The song gets taken into a different direction and the rapping almost seems like it’s not needed, but this is pretty cool to play in a dance/club atmosphere where your happy it keeps you moving.

One of my favorite groups from New Zealand, The Naked & Famous put out a wonderful track in 2010, “Young Blood” which Chiddy Bang remixed and rapped on (amazing!) and a few months back, Dave Sitek, guitarist in indie rock band, TV On The Radio, remixed “Young Blood”. I have a feeling he put some of his own guitar work on the remix, which is a great addition to the original and some electronic beats hear and there. Overall I like how Dave Sitek didn’t take hardly anything out of the original.

The White Panda – Pandamonium (album) *killer mashup mix

1291461087 1 150x150 The White Panda Pandamonium (album) *killer mashup mixThis week, The White Panda released their latest album, Pandamonium, a 40-track mix featuring some of their past mashups, tons of new mashup’s and overall a MUST DOWNLOAD if you like mashups. Once again, The White Panda show why they are possibly the best 2 song mashup artist, always seeming to find 2-3 songs that fit in so well to mashup.

There’s tons of great mashups on this mix, but here’s my top four favorites.
Bust A Love (Haddaway x Young MC)

Damn I Can’t Stop (Red Hot Chili Peppers x Youngbloodz)

D.R.E Don’t Go (Mike Posner x Dr. Dre)

Walking On Al (Paul Simon x Empire Of The Sun)

The Dean’s List just came out with a remix to Empire of the Sun’s “The People”. This track is rumored to be on their next mixtape The Drive-In.

I already love the original version and especially enjoy their remix of it. Sonny Shotz always knows how to flow and the instrumentals are catchy as well. Listen to it and let us know what you think!

three 6 mafia 02 Mashup of the Day: “Pumped Up Empire of Syrup”

Mashup between Three 6 Mafia, Foster the People and Empire of the Sun. I really like the last two indie rock/alternative acts and like a few Three 6 Mafia songs. Putting all three of these songs together works so well and I’m glad Black Glove made this.

The birth of Seattle hip-hop

July 6th, 2010 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Miscellaneous |

A city you would never imagine having a hip-hop pulse, we bring you two up-and-coming hip-hop groups from the Emereld City. The melodies are hot, mostly sampled from instrumentals you wouldn’t expect to hear in a hip-hop song, which enhances the song along with their rhymes.

Fresh Espresso
Originally from Michigan they met in Seattle WA and quickly began writing music together. Their beats are ahead of its time and their ryhmes aren’t far behind. “Diamond Pistols” has one of the best instrumentals you have never heard. Just like their band name suggests, they are fresh like a cup of coffee to wake you up for your day.

Blue Scholars
One of the top underground hip-hop duo’s in Seattle, they recently sampled Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream”. Check out “New People” in which they add a couple of beats to make it a very smooth hip-hop song.

Also check out Pittsburgh’s finest rapper Wiz Khalifa, who raps over the same Empire of the Sun song.
