Hi-Rez – The Window (mixtape)

May 15th, 2012 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Hip-Hop/Rap |

On May 13th arguably one of the best mixtapes of 2012 dropped. Eighteen year-old Fort Lauderdale local, Hi-Rez, recently dropped his newest mixtape “The Window“. The tape is entitled ‘The Window” because it is Hi-Rez’s most lyrical project up to date.

The Window symbolizes  the outlet Hi-Rez has created for his fans to interpret his life through his music. If you have never heard of Hi-Rez I highly recommend this tape. Rez  tuly inspires me through his music, expect to see this man making big moves in the near future. Hi-Rez – A Walk to Remember (Mixtape)

September 26th, 2011 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Hip-Hop/Rap, Mixtape Monday |

Hi-Rez dropped an INCREDIBLE new mixtape recently. On first listen, I’ve already fallen in love, incredible beats, with some great lyricism and smooth verses. An all around great project from the 17 year old rapper from the Sunshine State.

I would reccommend listening to “Puppy Love” and “It Was Never Easy” (my personal favorites). Pay attention to all the samples throughout this mixtape, some pretty interesting stuff.

Amtrac – Venice

June 22nd, 2011 by | Dance, Techno |

Amtrac continues to take up more and more of my party playlist with his latest single “Venice.” The track slowly builds before crescendoing 30 seconds into the song, leading immediately into a 3 minute funky dance party.

If you’re in Florida, make sure to catch Amtrac when he’s throwing down at one of the clubs on South Beach. If you’re somewhere else, follow him on Twitter and Facebook, and be sure this song is a part of your party jams.

Hidden Gem: Laws *Your Future Favorite Rapper

June 12th, 2011 by | Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap |

All you need to know about him is he’s “your future favorite rapper”. Behind the quality production from his last mixtape, 4:57 (DOWNLOAD), which he released in February, Laws recently released, Yesterday’s Future (DOWNLOAD), which is a collection of songs that samples legend Paul McCartney.

4:57 mixtape was produced mostly by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League but also has a song produced by Calvin Harris (featured below). Both mixtapes are quality productions and below I have featured about five of my favorite Laws songs.
Laws & Paul McCartney – Knocking at the Door
Laws & Paul McCartney – Not Coming Down (Mr. Bellamy pt. 1)
Laws – Colors (I Don’t Care) Ft. Calvin Harris (Prod. by Calvin Harris)
Laws – Flashback (Prod. by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. LEAGUE)
Laws – My Chick ft. Dion Primo (Prod. by Benjamin Plant)

Hidden Gem: The Heavy Pets *Crunchy Jam Shreddage

June 3rd, 2011 by | Hidden Gem, Rock |

The Heavy Pets are a major up-and-coming jam band out of New York by way of South Florida. I know when a lot of people think of jam bands, they think of noodling and uninteresting songs that linger on for far too long. Well, you wont find any of that with the Heavy Pets.

The Heavy Pets have released 2 full length CDs along with an EP, full of tight, awesome songs. Being from Florida, their songs have a little reggae, chilled out influence, and of course some ol’ fashion White Boy funk. With a lot of jam bands, people wont listen to their studio CDs, because these bands aren’t as skilled at songwriting as they are at jamming. However, the Heavy Pets do both very well. Listening to their studio stuff provides a different, yet equally awesome experience compared to seeing them live.

The Pets are still touring and playing non-stop shows supporting their latest, self-titled album. In a studio setting, their songs are tight and catchy, and live, these dudes can take any song and extend it for as long as they want without getting boring. The Pets are so skilled at taking their jams through slow methodical build-ups, epic peaks, and back to the beginning before you even realize what happened. Check out some of my favorites of theirs below:

The Heavy Pets – “Jackie Bones”

The Heavy Pets – “Operation of Flight”

Follow the Heavy Pets on Twitter and Facebook and when these guys come to your city, do yourself a favor and go see them. Their shows are epic. Also, if you like what you hear, support the Pets by buying their self-titled album, or earlier double-album Whale on itunes.

Hi-Rez – Early Release (Mixtape)

May 27th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

I may be partial to Hi-Rez because he’s one of very few rappers coming out of South Florida, where I’m originally from. However, his latest mixtape, Early Release is definitely a must listen. Hi-Rez is a 17 year old white kid from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, but he can spit for sure.

He’s still young, but his style is reminiscent of an early Mac Miller, which is definitely a good sign. The songs throughout Early Release are mainly more chilled out, but he goes hard on a few songs. Hi-Rez doesn’t make any false claims of tons of money, hoes, and stuff like that. He lets his rapping do the talking. Check out some favorites below:

The City Ft. Triple J (Prod Ante)

Headed To The Top (Prod. By Alex Kresovich)

This kid is definitely a major up-and-comer, and will surely be doing big things in the near future. Follow him on Twitter and download Early Release here.
