Review: Houndmouth live at The Mint *alt folk up and comers

October 13th, 2013 by | Concert/Festival Review, Music Video, Rock |

Last Wednesday, my brother and I caught Indiana folk rock band Houndmouth at The Mint in West Los Angeles. The Mint invited us out and knew I would love the harmonized vocals and positive energy that Houndmouth displayed throughout the set.

Although at times it felt like I heard songs more than once because some of their tunes sound similar, overall I felt encouraged to sing along to many of their tunes because the whole band was singing, which I loved. A quality show on a weeknight, if you happen to see Houndmouth on a lineup at an event, I highly recommend checking them out, especially if you dig folk music. As someone whose never been too much into folk, Houndmouth is one of my few exceptions as they have an upbeat vibe or at least understand that if everybody in the band sings along, their audience will be encouraged and enjoy to sing along with them, it’s fun.

Watch videos to “Penitentiary” and the single off their debut album, From The Hills Below The City (iTunes), “On The Road”.

Review: Jamie N Commons live at The Grammys offices

August 15th, 2013 by | Before Bigs Exclusive, Concert/Festival Review, Rock |

Probably most of you don’t know but I recently got hired by The Grammys to work in their Awards department and help with the process of all the award submissions they’ve been getting. It’s been an amazing experience and one of my favorite parts of it is when artists drop by to perform a few songs for us. The latest act, Jamie N Commons, was signed by mega-hit producer Alex Da Kid, whose record label, Kid In A Korner, also has Imagine Dragons on the label.

Anyways Jamie N Commons WILL BE A STAR! The dude has a unique voice that as Alex Da Kid described as a “timeless instrument”. Listening to him live was like wandering through nature being lost and then hearing Jamie’s raspy Johnny Cash-like vocals guiding you to the direction you need to take. His voice will take him far and my favorite part of their brief performance was when the pianist and the bassist (who didn’t have his bass) sang with Jamie to create awesome harmonized vocals on some of the choruses. It was a great performance and Jamie N Commons are an extremely humble band to keep an eye on as they are currently in the studio working on their major label debut album.

Below are two songs he performed which I absolutely loved, “Wash Me In The Water” and “Lead Me Home” (which was used in AMC’s The Walking Dead) (more…)

Twin River – Rough Gold EP

August 12th, 2012 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie |

This Vancouver based indie-folk band is one you will not want to miss. Courtney Ewan and Andy Bishop are a couple of kids who make up Twin River laying down some rad harmonies and living up to the brand of folk. Instantly, you will notice their gift for the seemingly contradicting–but at the same time harmonious–juxtaposition of the ominous music paired with pretty, innocent, and even an up-beat melody. Not only are they talented musicians, but storytellers as well. Take a listen for yourself to their new streamable EP.

Hidden Gem: Milo Greene *cinematic pop

February 12th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video, Pop |

So I’m about a year late on this but I was recently introduced to Milo Greene, and LA band that I can’t wait to see live tomorrow at The Satellite as they start their February residency there.

Below are my two favorites from the up-and-coming band, “1957” and “Don’t You Give Up On Me”. Their sound can best be described as cinematic indie pop with a flair of folk and country.

Click more to watch a live session of Milo Greene performing “1957”, my favorite from them. (more…)

You Can Run ft. Kid Cudi – Bryan Greenberg

January 14th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Rock |

It’s Friday and that means it’s time to relax. Relax to this song by actor/musician Bryan Greenberg (co-star of HBO’s How To Make It America with Kid Cudi) which features Kid Cudi. This is the most unusual Kid Cudi feature but it’s got a good soft rock/acoustic vibe to it. Below is the CDQ version to listen and download.

When you and your friends are arguing whose a bigger Kid Cudi fan, play this song.
