Sucks that the weekend is over but here’s an 85 minute mix from newcomer Tip-Z to get you over that case of the Monday’s you might be feeling.

Tip-Z‘s Magical Groove Potion is a fresh take on the sounds of Nu Disco, Funk and Electro-Pop. Starting at 110 BPM, it slowly works its way up to 130 BPM by the end to keep your head bouncin’ and your booty shakin’ without a moment of boredom. Tip-Z hasn’t posted the tracklist yet but when he does I will add that below. Until then, stream and download Tip-Z’s Magical Groove Potion and check out his links below that.

Falcon Punch – Where You’ll Stay *disco-funk

August 9th, 2011 by | Disco |

If your in a funk, have some funk with Falcon Punch! I love songs that have clear references to the classics while displaying a new sound. Falcon Punch doesn’t sound so new but I’m in a funk and I need some funk to cheer me up.

Review: Royal Family Ball in Denver

May 23rd, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B |

I know on Before the Bigs we post a ton of hip-hop, but seriously, you don’t know hip-hop if you don’t know the jazz side of it. This past weekend had jazz/hip-hoppers Soulive descended on Denver, Colorado for two days, for what they called, the “Royal Family Ball.” They would perform two epic shows alongside their funk bretheren Lettuce and the hip-hop/breakbeat group Break Science. Each would be epic, with over 5 hours of music each night, and luckily, I was able to attend the Friday show, the first night of the party. Read the rest of the review after the jump:

The Main Squeeze – Mixed Up (Video)

May 22nd, 2011 by | Chill/Jam/Reggae, Music Video |

Today, Indiana funkateers, The Main Squeeze, dropped their first official video, providing the visuals to their track “Mixed Up” off their debut album First Drops. Not only is the song funktastic, but it makes me really want to see them in concert. Check out the video after the jump:

Hidden Gem: The Main Squeeze

May 19th, 2011 by | Hidden Gem, Rock |

The Main Squeeze are a local funk/jam band out of Indiana University, but they seriously have the chops to go along way. Their music has the upbeat tightness of Soulive with the fat booty shaking jams of groups like Dumpstaphunk and the Meters. You can find The Main Squeeze throwing down almost every week either at a house party or one of the local bars, and they bring it absolutely every time. They bring their signature dirty funk in every song, and they can stretch out the jams for days. Plus every member of the group can shred. Even the drummer…he can shred on the drums.
Right now, they keep very local, but these guys are starting to expand their territory with a slot at The Equifunk and Summer Camp festivals this summer, but if you get a chance to see them, do it. They turn every venue they play into an all-out dance party.
They recently dropped their first album, appropriately titled First Drops for free over the Internet. It’s a 7 song EP that shows how far they can take the funk. Check out “Ebaneezer”

Hidden Gem: Bad Rabbits

February 13th, 2011 by | Hidden Gem, Music Video, R&B, Rock |

While you are watching the Grammy awards tonight, hopefully you noticed how mainstream it gets with many talented artists that don’t get considered. In 2012 that will change with one group, the Bad Rabbits who mix R&B, Rock, Funk and Soul to make for an awesome genre-blending band out of Boston. Above is the music video to their latest single, “Neverland” off their last EP, Stick Up Kids (download).

Here’s 3 of my favorites although I like almost all their songs.

Can’t Back Down

Currently Bad Rabbits are working with legendary producer Teddy Riley who has produced for Blackstreet, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. This should propel Bad Rabbits to garner some radio hits and get some big mainstream attention this year. Bad Rabbits are a must watch group in 2011, follow them on facebook and twitter.

Prospect of the Week: Outasight

August 20th, 2010 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Miscellaneous, Prospect of the Week |

Outasight – Catch Me If You Can from gregthedude on Vimeo.

Even though this rapper signed with a major record label in October 2009 with Warner Bros., Outasight is our Prospect of the Week because he hasn’t released a debut album yet, but is definately on the verge of becoming mainstream. Although Outasight is defined as a hip-hop artist, he has traces of rock, soul and some pop in the songs, which makes for a great genre-blending artist. The video above is the music video for the single, “Catch Me If You Can” from the Further EP and in 2010, Outasight collaborated with Asher Roth on the remix to the song.

On August 17, Outasight put out a mixtape, Never Say Never, which I really love and have included a link to below. This Yonkers, NY based musician will be releasing his debut album, From Here to Eternity in the Fall of 2010 (release date TBA).

Below I have included a few of my favorites by Outasight and download links to their latest mixtape (Never Say Never) and the Further EP, released in December ’09 and gained so much buzz that it isn’t free anymore 🙁  Outasight – Never Say Never – She’s Leaving Home by Hypetrak  Outasight – Never Say Never – Be Alright by Hypetrak  Outasight – Catch Me If You Can Remix (ft Asher Roth) by Tea N Muffin  Outasight – Never Say Never – Near The End (ft.
