Review: Freedom Fry live Good Times at Davey Waynes (Hollywood)

March 30th, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Concert/Festival Review, Pop |

Last night I had the pleasure of catching one of my favorite emerging folk-pop bands, Freedom Fry at Hollywood bar Good Times At Davey Wayne’s. It’s not every Wednesday I get to catch a band that has such a laid back yet infectious vibe that is easy to cling to.

My favorites I heard them do live was the cover of Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” which was really cool and had a soft poppy vibe that was fun; also enjoyed their latest song release “Brave”, my favorite 2017 song release of theirs, “Awake” and one of my all-time favorites from this rising group, “Shaky Ground”. Stream my favorites below. (more…)

Review: Urban Cone at Bardot *electric catchy pop

February 8th, 2017 by | Concert/Festival Review, Electronic Rock, Electropop, Pop |

Monday night I caught the recently signed to Interscope band Urban Cone as they rocked the intimate stage at Bardot in front of a small but packed house in Hollywood. They were so damn catchy with their infectious electro-pop, I enjoyed just about every song they performed in their short but jam-packed set.

Last week they released the catchy pop hit, “Old School” which should be all over pop/top 40 radio stations and garnering tons of streams online. They’ve been making catchy alternative electro pop tracks for years and it seems with a major label backing, they could finally break out in the US as they continue to gain recognition, they clearly have what it takes and as they got a fun sound that’s hard not to like.

Stream or watch my 4 favorites they performed live below, “Old School”, “Sadness Disease” and “Come Back To Me” and “Urban Photograph”. (more…)

Review: Tanlines at The Fonda *pretty, pretty good

December 12th, 2015 by | Alternative/Indie, Electropop |

Was Tanlines great live? Probably not, but were they fun to watch and have some songs that are quite catchy? Absolutely! I got to watch them 14 songs headlining to a small crowd at The Fonda Theatre on a Wednesday night and it was a pretty, pretty good show. My favorites are “Slipping Away”, “Real Life” and “All Of Me”. Setlist above, my favorite songs below.

Smallpools live at The Fonda Theatre

So after I went to dinner with my parents and my girlfriend for my birthday, I won myself a pair of tickets to see Smallpools at Fonda Theatre in Hollywood and walked over to that show after a fine dining experience from Cleo at The Redbury Hotel.

Smallpools was fantastic live, bringing lots of energy with their catchy indie electro pop jams like “Over & Over”, “Dreaming” and one of my favorites “Street Fight”. I seriously loved almost all their songs in their set, except they need to get rid of their “A Real Hero” cover because they are better than that song and the band that performs that song. They should go back to covering The New Radicals “You Get What You Give” or perform a “Closing Time” cover, that’s always fun.

Anways, here’s videos to my favorite songs performed by Smallpools. (more…)

Review: Mike Posner and Main Attrakionz at Bardot

June 1st, 2015 by | Concert/Festival Review, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, R&B |

Last Monday, I caught cloud rap duo Main Attrakionz and Mike Posner perform new songs to much delight of the Hollywood crowd at Bardot. Main Attrakionz opened things up quite nicely with wave-y beats, solid rhymes and just a really good presence, I’m super excited for their debut album to come out on Vapor Records later this month. Here’s a song off the upcoming album.

Mike Posner was last to close out the night and he didn’t perform his hit single, Cooler Than Me, but performed many hit songs he wrote for Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne and others as well as “Please Don’t Go”, easily one of my favorites he did and what I feel should have been another hit single. I also really liked his striped down version of “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” which was fun to hear him partying with DJs and other famous music folk. (more…)

Review: Coin, Pretty Sister at Bardot

May 20th, 2015 by | Alternative/Indie, Concert/Festival Review, Electropop, R&B, Rock, synthpop |

June 9, indie rockers COIN, made their LA debut performing at KCRW’s It’s A School Night at Bardot in Hollywood, CA. They rocked out and performed some future hits and were a lot of fun to see live! My favorite song by far was “Run”, their single that’s hitting alternative stations on satellite radio and is a hit single!

Watch the music video for “Run” below. (more…)

Review: The Wyld at Bardot’s It’s A School Night

March 26th, 2014 by | Alternative/Indie, Concert/Festival Review, Hip-Hop/Rap |

New Zealand alternative hip-hop trio The Wyld made their US performance debut with an intimate show at Bardot in Hollywood, California to a packed house. During the show, I spotted my friend and rapper @KoshaDillz and we were able to discuss the performance we were watching. To be honest, I hate to talk bad but I wasn’t impressed with The Wyld at all. This is a band I’ve been following since fall 2010 when they came onto the scene with “Revolution” and followed that up with “Full Circle” nearly a month later in late 2010. I became a huge fan and thought they had a ton of potential as they had this Kid Cudi with a Cage The Elephant vibe. They didn’t release anything for a while until fall 2013 with the release of Abstract EP, which really disappointed me as there was only 1 song from it, I’ve since continued to enjoy, “Wake Up” plus their new edit of “Revolution”.

Show & Album Review: Basic Vacation at It’s A School Night & their debut EP

November 4th, 2013 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie, Concert/Festival Review, Electronic Rock, Electropop, Rock |

A week and a half ago I saw emerging electronic pop/rock act Basic Vacation. Based on what I heard in their 5-track debut EP and their intimate performance at Bardot for the KCRW curated It’s a School Night, they will become a huge mainstream act in the realm of Imagine Dragons mixed with Fun. I repeat, this group will become a huge mainstream act!

I actually dug almost everything they performed including their hit, “I Believe”, “It’s All Happening” (probably their next single), “You’re In My Head” and “Worlds Collide”. These 4 tracks are on their 5 track EP which I highly recommend listening to below. Their live set was fun alternative pop rock with many people singing the oohs and other words that are easy to sing along to. I also enjoyed when Basic Vacation covered “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears, thanks @JakeCraney for the reminder of that classic gem getting cover treatment.

Actually Bardot didn’t do this band justice, they deserve to play in front of way larger crowds and I feel very lucky to get to see them free on a Monday night in Hollywood at a venue that holds no more than 200 people. Stream the Basic Vacation EP (iTunes) below and watch their video for “I Believe”.

I highly recommend attending It’s A School Night, it was my first time there and I had a nice time getting to see a band that wouldn’t normally be free to see. They usually curate shows getting artists before they blow up, I wish I had KCRW’s resources to do something like that.

Review: Armand Van Helden at Create Nightclub

October 25th, 2013 by | Concert/Festival Review, Dance, Disco, Electro, House |

Last Saturday, a few buddies and I caught, Armand Van Helden, aka 1/2 of critically acclaimed DJ duo Duck Sauce, at Create Nightclub in Hollywood.  His DJ set went by super quick although it lasted for over two hours, which shows how entertaining of a set he performed, which was mostly disco and progressive house, lots of fun!

Anyways, I don’t remember a ton of what he spun, but when he performed 2009 Duck Sauce hit “Anyway” and the latest Duck Sauce single, 2013’s “It’s You”. Oh and also his 1996 classic, “The Funk Phenomena”; watch music video’s for those three songs below.
