Review: X Ambassadors at Bootleg Theatre *excellent

April 7th, 2014 by | Concert/Festival Review, Rock |

Last Thursday I saw an excellent performance from X Ambassadors, who debuted new tracks off their latest EP, The Reason as well as did a brief cover of “Sabotage” by Beastie Boys to lead into another one of their tracks. They even performed two songs in their encore, including “Brother” off their first EP and a song with Jamie N Commons, “Jungle”, that makes me want to see the film the song was made for.

Overall a very impressive performance from the rising Brooklyn band signed to Kid In A Korner’s label (Imagine Dragons, Skylar Grey, Jamie N Commons), the subsidiary under Interscope led by producer Alex Da Kid. I highly recommend catching X Ambassadors live as they will not disappoint because of their high energy, catchy hooks and the drums and guitar are straight fire throughout the song.

I loved all but 1 song, some acoustic slowed-down jam that I wasn’t in the mood for. Other than that, nearly perfect set and this group is going to blow up once their debut album drops! Stream “Brother” and The Reason EP below, all the tracks on that are STRAIGHT FIRE!

Play-N-Skillz – Up All Night *first leak off Red October mixtape

October 10th, 2011 by | Pop, R&B |

Play-N-Skillz hit us up with their latest single, “Up All Night” a smooth pop/R&B jam that will be off their upcoming “Red October” mixtape dropping October 27th.

While the project is a hip-hop mixtape, it’s from removed from our previous “Platino Lifestyle” project. It has a less aggressive cooler vibe, and it’ll feature production from Symbolyc-One, who produced Kanye West‘s “Power” and “Murder To Excellence”.

Listen and download “Up All Night”.

Here’s some exciting news for Play-N-Skillz fans that their management sent us:

To give you a little information on what Play-N-Skillz have been up to lately, we recently signed a production deal with Jimmy Iovine over at Interscope. Being under the same label with Akon, Lady Gaga, and more is something we’re very excited about. After “Red October”, we plan on releasing an electro-pop-dubstep project currently untitled followed by our single with Pitbull and Wynter Gordon.

Dom Kennedy – CDC ft. Casey Veggies & cARTer (video + mp3)

May 29th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

Memorial Day weekend, here’s a chill song from LA rappers Dom Kennedy, Casey Veggies & cARTer. The beat on this is new school West coast rap, the flow is contagious, overall I’m a big fan. This is one of those hip-hop songs, where you clearly hear the talent out of these dudes.

iSquare might be the next Black Eyed Peas. These hip-pop up-and-comers are busting onto the scene, especially now since the release of the music video above. The group’s hit single, “Hey Sexy Lady”, should be on the radio if it isn’t already and I look for more from the interscope-signed group.

Download “Hey Sexy Lady” or buy it on Hey. Check out iSquare on facebook. Enjoy!

Far East Movement – “If I Was You” x “Like a G6″

September 29th, 2010 by | Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video, Pop |
The song above was a #1 download on iTunes by electro/hip-hop group Far East Movement. They started in Los Angeles in 2003 and are called Far East Movement because of the varying Asian backgrounds of the 4 Asian-American members of the group.

They have put out several albums and a couple other releases, and are signed by a subsidiary of Interscope Records. They make party/club tracks and have great electronica beats with catchy hooks.

Below I have included their most recent song “If I Was You” featuring Snoop Dogg and their latest hit single “Like A G6”.  Far East Movement – If I Was You Ft. Snoop Dogg Download  FAR EAST MOVEMENT – Like a G6  Download

Prospect of the Week: Freddie Gibbs

September 17th, 2010 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Prospect of the Week |
Just to tell you a little bit about why Freddie Gibbs is this week’s Prospect of the Week: he was signed by Interscope Recrods before being let go from the deal without a record being released. Instead of going Charles Hamilton crazy (you can quote me on that) and putting out shitty mixtape after another, Gibbs put out an EP and a couple of solid mixtapes.
In between a couple of those mixtapes, Gibbs got signed by Decon Records. By the way Gibbs was featured on XXL Mag’s Freshmen 2010 list which includes Big Sean, Donnis, J. Cole and Wiz Khalifa to name a few.
Gibbs is from Gary, Indiana, currently based in SoCal, and has been hard at work putting out an EP to purchase, Str8 Killa, in early August. Then Freddie put out a mixtape, Str8 Killa No Filla, in mid-August.
While he has been in a few music videos for some of his hit songs on these releases, he has been working on his debut album, Baby-Faced Killa, set to drop later this year. Three releases in one year, that’s pretty good Mr. Gibbs.

Listen and download “Oil Money” feat. Chuck Inglish, Chip Tha Ripper, Bun B & Dan Auerbach and also listen and download “On One” and “Born to Roll”. Download links to latest mixtape and EP below. Hot New Mixtapes!

August 14th, 2010 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B |

Three new mixtapes came out this week. One by an up-and-coming rap artist in Mac Miller, another by an up-and-coming R&B;/Hip-Hop artist in Bei Maejor and one by an artist who received much hype in 2009 but then things fell apart, and now he is on a comeback, Charles Hamilton.

I have listened to all three mixtapes and my favorite is Bei Maejor’s Upside Down mixtape. With several mainstream artists featured on it including Trey Songz, T-Pain, Drake and Keri Hilson, this mixtape should’ve really been Bei Maejor’s debut album, especially with Clinton Sparks producing it.

Mac Miller also has a good new mixtape entitled K.I.D.S. I really enjoy several songs on this hip-hop mixtape that has some real chill songs as well as some upbeat songs that I hope to hear more of from this Pittsburgh native. My favorite songs on the mixtape are “Don’t Mind If I Do”, “The Spins” and “Nikes On My Feet”.

Recently Charles Hamilton put out the mixtape Tafietu which is considered an album by other bloggers since this was supposed to be his debut album until Interscope executives heard a couple of songs and decided to pull the plug. The mixtape/album is OK and the only song I can listen to constantly is “3rd and Goal” which if I think could be a single and possibly get radio play if Charles Hamilton didn’t have such a bad reputation lately (just released from a mental hospital, dropped from record label, etc.).
