Aer – The Reach (mixtape) *chill-hop

May 21st, 2011 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie, Chill/Jam/Reggae, Hip-Hop/Rap |

Aer is a chill-hop group that reminds me of my favorite Philly artist, G. Love mixed with influences from Jack Johnson. I don’t think Aer will have mainstream success but this chill hip-hop sound with acoustic guitars and chill kick drum beats gives them a smooth chill sound that it’s hard not to like.

Here’s my three favorites off their latest mixtape, The Reach (DOWNLOAD).
Aer – Lights (Can You Keep It)
Aer – Every Day
Aer – Come and Go

Bonus: Because I mentioned G. Love and Jack Johnson, it’s necessary I include the song they did together around 2005.

Mashup Monday: virgins of BtB

March 21st, 2011 by | Mashup, Mashup Monday |

First RIP Nate Dogg, “Regulate” is one of the greatest hip-hop songs of all time!

Now onto some mashups. The mashup artists below have never been featured on Before the Bigs. The first few mashups are pretty chill while the last two have more upbeat electronic beats/synths to them.

First we got Vico Ono who uses the rapping from Skee-Lo over the always chill Jack Johnson instrumentals. If a music video was made for this song, it would be somebody laying down at the beach and slowly fall asleep, entering the dream sequence of the lyrics from Skee-Lo.
I Wish I Was Jack Johnson by Vico Ono
Next we got Fissunix who uses the instrumentals to the song all white people know the lyrics of versus the vocals of a Two Door Cinema Club song I love the instrumentals of. Oasis instrumentals vs. TDCC vocals, let’s all chill by the camp fire to this song.
Wonderwall You Know by Fissunix
T.I. vs The Beatles! Imagine if T.I. came out on stage performing this song while holding all those weapons he illegally owned. I don’t know how I would respond to such a site. Well done Benjamin Dranklin, the two words to best describe this song would be safe hip-hop.
What You Know About Blackbird (T.I. vs The Beatles) by Benjamin Dranklin
Next we got Clubsauce who uses two underrated artists in Clipse and Bag Raiders. Clipse and Bun B on the rapping with Bag Raiders electronica instrumentals.
Clipse vs. Bag Raiders – Wamp Wamp by Mouth by Clubsauce
Lastly Mr Physix “Soldier of Luchini” is Camp Lo vs Rusko vs The Temper Trap. I like how all three of these artists are blended in although you can probably insert another hip-hop act other than Camp Lo and still get a dope mashup. Download

Mashup Monday: The Friendly Giant, John Marr, Party Ben

February 21st, 2011 by | Mashup, Mashup Monday |

For this week’s mashup monday I decided to dedicate it to three emerging mashup DJ’s: The Friendly Giant, John Marr, and Party Ben. I have 2 songs I like a lot from each artist below to listen and download.

First we got John Marr, a UK DJ whose first mashup below adds a more elelectronic feel to Snow Patrol’s hit single “Chasing Cars”. In the second mashup it’s more a remix as Mike Posner originally used the Miami Horror song in another song of his. I like the party feel of it.
John Marr – Chasing Kylie (Snow Patrol vs Kylie Minogue)
John Marr – Sometimes Cooler Than Me (Mike Posner vs Miami Horror)
Next DJ is LA-based The Friendly Giant who is really good at mixing two catchy songs into a dope mashup. Two examples below.
The Friendly Giant – Forever (Drake vs Jack Johnson)
The Friendly Giant – Don’t Stop This Plane (Wiz Khalifa vs Journey)
Lastly Party Ben is probably my favorite of the three just because he’s been around the longest from what I know. Here’s two of my favorites by him, they are kind of old but still great.
Party Ben – Shame (At Nite) (Evelyn Chamagne King vs. Kid Cudi)
Party Ben – Live Your Life Punk (Rihanna/T.I. vs Vampire Weekend)

M.I creates a solid blended mixtape with Jack Johnson songs. A calming listen from Jack Johnson samples and pretty good flow and rhymes.
My favorites are Do u Remember, A Dream, and All at Once. Check out the mixtape after the jump.
