Covers *Cris Cab, Neon Hitch, PJ Simas, Tokyo Police Club, Weezer

Five new covers from artists ranging from Reggae to rock and much of what’s in between.

First we go with Cris Cab‘s reggae/jam cover to Foster The People‘s “Pumped Up Kicks”. I like how the chill vibes and overall Cris Cab gives it a new sound which is refreshing since the only thing I hear with “Pumped Up Kicks” these days is remixes and the song being played all over the radio. Watch the music video here.

Cris Cab – Pumped Up Kicks

I got mixed reactions when I played this to the Weapons of Audio fam recently. However it’s kind of catchy, the ginger is interesting but overall some of you might be passing on this shit. However, Neon Hitch‘s vocals are all over the place, slows the song up and takes out the dubstep. The song is more minimalistic than the original, the lyrics sound even more dumb and after writing a few sentences on this cover, I may be less a fan. Watch the music video for the cover, it makes it better.

Neon Hitch – Gucci Gucci

PJ Simas is killing it among the white boy acoustic guitar rappers. If you can’t think of any others in that category, trust me when I say PJ Simas is talented and might be a better producer than performer. However he puts an acoustic chilled out version of Mac Miller‘s “Frick Park Market” which is real nice to relax to.

I’m a fan of Tokyo Police Club so when I saw this LCD Soundsystem cover they did, I immediately became a fan. It picks up real nicely and since LCD isn’t releasing new music, this is refreshing. Really liking the alternative & punk vibe.

Tokyo Police Club – All My Friends

Lastly comes a cover by one of my all-time favorite rock bands, Weezer. They cover The Band‘s “The Weight”, one of the best classic rock songs of all-time. “The Weight” is also one of those songs that seems really easy to sing when your drunk but it’s not, trust me, I have tried to sing the lyrics to this song drunk but stumbled in so many ways.

indie update *Joywave, Starf*cker, Bedouin Soundclash, Young Empires, More Amor

Somebody told me we hadn’t done an indie music update in a while so here’s five indie songs that I downloaded within the last couple months, that I really like and have yet to post. As usual, most of these bands are emerging musicians in the industry.

First we got 5-member mashup group out of Rochester, New York, Joywave, who utilized indie electro-pop artists Miike Snow and LCD Soundsystem to create a mashup that just has wonderful over-lapping sounds and has this great instrumental flow. “Betelgeuse” comes off their latest mixtape 77777 (download). (via IndieShuffle)

Next we got a new Starfucker track, “Death As A Fetish”. I have never been the greatest fan of the vocals but have almost always loved the instrumentals Starfucker assembles.
Starf*cker – Death As A Fetish
I have known about Bedouin Soundclash since 2007 when my friend Felon Fresh gave me a great introduction to indie/alternative music in a mix she made for another friend of mine. “Mountain Top” instantly became my favorite Bedouin Soundclash track with the instrumentals and the lyrics which make we want to climb atop a mountain for some strange reason.
Bedouin Soundclash – Mountain Top
I realize most indie music I enjoy because of the instrumentals that catch my ears then the vocals not being annoying is the 2nd reason I enjoy the track. Young Empires make original tracks as well as dope remixes and are still a bit raw with what seems like a fairly simple sound at the moment. However I see Young Empires only getting better as they better figure out their music style. (via TBIS)
Young Empires – Rain of Gold
Lastly comes a group that reminds me of Oasis, especially when it gets to the chorus. More Amor is a young indie pop group and in “Young Hollywood” they sing about falling into the Hollywood scene. More Amor is a mix of Oasis with Owl City but they have an originality that we should keep an eye on. (via P&P)
