We haven’t done Mashup Monday in awhile, mostly because I’m starting to hate how catchy and similar-sounding mashups have become. I’m losing respect for the genre, because I know how easy it is to make a mashup and I don’t like how popular some mashup artists have become for mixing one song with another song or two.
However Steely Chan seems to have created mashups that have funky grooves more along the lines of remixes, by mixing in some funky instrumentals into mostly classic hip-hop songs.
Stream and download my most recent favorite from Vancouver’s Steely Chan.
Here’s another five mashup/remixes from Steely Chan. (more…)
What do you get when you mix songs off Kinetics & One Love‘s 2009 album, Fading Back to Normal, with hits like Kanye’s “Runaway” and M83′s “Midnight City”? A sick explosion of the hottest pop and hip hop tunes mixed with the gritty rap that is K&OL’s trademark.
Cross-fading Back To Normal is the epic remix project K&OL have just completed and lemme tell you, each mash-up/remix is a total eargasm.
Recently a bunch of up-and-coming mashup DJs put out Swagged Out: Volume 2 (DOWNLOAD), a remix/mashup mixtape featuring several dope bangers. Here’s a word from the artists:
As a team, we have put together this mixtape for your enjoyment. It contains nineteen tracks from nineteen different producers. Some will make you rage your ass off, others will let you chill out and relax to the beats. Most tracks are mashups, although some may just be beats and remixes. We hope to showcase what we can do as a team and bring musical enjoyment to your ears.
Three new tracks from my favorite DJ in Vancouver, DJ Brownjoe. Once he changes his DJ name to something more catchy and appealing, this kid from the great white north is going to blow up. He’s opened for Steve Aoki and The White Panda and is doing some stuff with female pop/electronic duo Nervo as well.
Last week he sent me three new bangers he just finished including a remix to the Skrillex track, “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”. He stripes the song down, pretty much taking out the dubstep, giving it a more dance/house feel that everybody can groove to.
Skrillex – Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (DJ Brownjoe remix)
Next he made a progressive house DJ set that I saw him begin to create back in July with “Bite Me”. It’s got catchy electronic piano instrumentals, synths are banging and reminds me of many other great progressive house tracks out there today.
DJ Brownjoe – Bite Me (Van Kay remix)
DJ Brownjoe created an interesting mashup-remix. He takes Dragonette‘s vocals in “Hello”, then remixes the Alesso remix to Alex Kenji, Starkillers & Nadia Ali‘s track, “Pressure”. However he keeps parts of the vocals from Nadia Ali in “Pressure” as if Nadia Ali and Dragonette are having a sing-off! 5-star banger! DJ Brownjoe – Hello Pressure (feat. Dragonette & Nadia Ali)
I love Alesso‘s remix to “Pressure” so I’ve decided to include that since it’s thirsty Thursday and this is an excellent club banger to bring the party noise.

Trying something new here. Two songs, two remixes per song. Time to decide which is the best?
First we got The White Stripes song, “Seven Nation Army” which The Glitch Mob remix and Jerry Rekonius used in a mashup/remix also using some Swedish House Mafia which always brings the party. The Glitch Mob remix sounds possessed, like the “Seven Nation Army” has been taken to hell. Seven Nation Army (The Glitch Mob Remix) One Nation Army (Jerry Rekonius Bootleg)
Next we got two different remixes to “You Can Dance” by Chilly Gonzales. First is by Walter Sobcek, which has a smooth relaxing synth feel. Then we got Fare Soldi Gonzobot who keeps the strong piano work by Chilly in the song, which is something I truly enjoy about the song and also Gonzo throws in some different vocals in. 2nd remix sounds like if the people partying to “You Can Dance” decided on working together to create a fun remix with some of their own vocals. Chilly Gonzales – You Can Dance (Walter Sobcek Remix) Chilly Gonzales – You Can Dance (Fare Soldi gonzobot remix)
An A vs B mashup with rapping/remixing from Rocky Business. I’m a huge fan of Rocky Business as I think they are a more rock but also more raw alternative Theophilus London.
Brenton Duvall is back with another dope mashup mixing together a Wiz Khalifa and Neon Hitch for a banging electronic pop hop. Thing I love about Brenton Duvall besides his progression as a musician from doing mashups to now producing for artists like Young Prince and Tayyib Ali, is that almost all of his songs have big differences in terms of the sound.
First time I heard Brenton Duvall was in a mashup between Lil Wayne and Passion Pit which is still one of my favorite mashups today. However his progression from a simple yet catchy mashup like that to the complexity in his latest productions just shows how talented this kid is.
Shout out to ChinUp Music for bringing this to my attention. Although this came out back in November 2010, I’m so glad I found out about it as most of the remixes are DOPE and several are MUST-DOWNLOADS! It’s time the world knows who Bad Rabbits is, a band that is a mix of rock & roll, funk and hip-hop.
First two songs are rap remixes to Phoenix’s smash hit, “1901″. Cello Kid raps in the first couple minutes then leaves the rest to Phoenix. In Joe Cool’s rap remix, the beat to “1901″ is mixed up a bit and overall the song is a bit more chill with dope instrumentals. 1901 (Cello Kid Remix) Joe Cool – 1901 (Prod.by Aartt Shou)
Next two songs is a remix and a mashup. DJ Ryno puts in several rap vocals and has that over some remixed “1901″ instrumentals, to make for a chill rap mashup/remix. Lastly comes a remix that came out in 2010 by DLID who slows up the song, throws in some subtle dubstep/electro to make for a chill alternative to the original “1901″. DJ Ryno – 1901s Player’s Anthem 1901 (Customised by DLID)
