Stream: Tuxedo – “2nd Time Around” *disco/funk

March 8th, 2017 by | Disco, Electropop, Pop, R&B, synthpop |

I love the future disco/funk vibes of Tuxedo and I’m so excited to share the first release from their upcoming album Tuxedo II (pre-order) out March 24 through Stones Throw Records. “2nd Time Around” continues the impressive upbeat debut release Tuxedo dropped in 2015 and I can’t wait for this 2nd album as it will be wholly original yet still draw influence from the future funk wobble of Zapp, Gap, Jam/Lewis and Junie Morrison, while nodding lyrically to Mtume, Jodeci and Cameo.

Tuxedo is Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One. The crystallization of their 2nd album’s concept comes courtesy of its message of universal love; thanks to the signature combination of soul and pop sensibility that have come to define Mayer’s hook. I can’t wait to hear the full length, definitely buying this album when it drops!

Stream “2nd Time Around” below, watch them perform it live on Jimmy Kimmel Live and peep the upcoming tour dates, you do not want to miss this duo live! (more…)

More in-depth review: Pacific Festival 2012

A couple Sunday’s ago, I attended Pacific Festival 2012: The Dunes, featuring Mayer HawthornePoolsideBag RaidersCapital Cities and much much more vibe out at the Newport Beach Marina. This was my 2nd time attending Pacific Festival and this year they toned it down on worldwide acts (last year Snoop Dogg, Cut Copy, Steve Aoki and Calvin Harris were some notable favorites) but they moved the location away from an isolated area (from Oak Canyon Ranch to Newport Beach) and really created this unique festival vibe on a beach.

While E-Wish’s review was straight to the point, it only covered half the acts we saw and is very simple.  Read my full review below.

Review: Pacific Festival 2012: The Dunes

September 9th, 2012 by | Before Bigs Exclusive, Concert/Festival Review |

Last Sunday, we had the luxury of attending the Pacific Festival at Newport Dunes. This event was very spread out on a beautiful resort with four different stages and a great beach vibe. It was the first year in this part of Newport Beach but certainly not the last. On top of it all, it was an extremely beautiful day. Perfect for an end of the summer fiesta!

The Pacific Festival had a much different atmosphere than your typical music festival (no drug use, somewhat conservative, kind of quiet, reserved etc.). Regardless, it was truly a great experience.

My favorite acts of the day were definitely Capital Cities, Mayer Hawthorne, Wildcat! Wildcat!, Steed Lord, American Royalty and Poolside many more. Take a listen to the best song of each performer’s set. Enjoy!

Capital Cities – “Safe and Sound”:

Mayer Hawthorne – “Held The Hand”:

Wildcat! Wildcat! – “Mr. Quiche”:

SteedLord – “Bed of Needles”:

American Royalty – “Matchstick”:

Poolside – “Take Me Home:”

Pacific Festival: The Dunes 2012 preview + official festival mix

August 21st, 2012 by | Before Bigs Exclusive, Daily Mix, Guest Mix |

Southern California’s Pacific Festival: The Dunes 2012 is quickly approaching and I thought I would provide some details into one of the most underrated festivals in California. Not only is there a great variety of music from retro soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne to daytime disco duo Poolside to probably the best electro-dance pop/rock band ever, Capital Cities, this is a festival you don’t want to miss on Sunday September 2! This festival will be set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean at The Dunes in Newport Beach with DJ sets from plenty of up-and-comers you need to see live including Bag Raiders, Goldroom andMiami Horror to name a few.

The best way for me to express my excitement for Pacific Festival (which we reviewed last year), is to once again provide the “unofficial” Pacific Festival 2012 mixtape, which features 15 of my favorite songs from the acts performing at this year’s festival. Stream the 15-track mix below as well as the official “Pacific Festival: The Dunes 2012” mix. Purchase tickets here and visit for more info on this must-see event that added the people behind Identity Festival to make this year’s festival even more of a rager! (more…)

Mayer Hawthorne – How Do You Do (album) *MUST-DOWNLOAD

November 1st, 2011 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, R&B |

I’m usually not into R&B that much but when you got white-boy soul like Mayer Hawthorne with a smooth buttery sound, I can dig it. I especially enjoy  Mayer Hawthorne sophomore album, How Do You Do, because I heard many of the songs live when I saw him perform a couple weeks back.

The album is a must-download. Here’s my five favorites off How Do You Do (iTunes).

Previous: Mayer Hawthorne & Empire of the Sun live at Club Nokia

Review: Empire of the Sun, Mayer Hawthorne & DJ Ivy at Club Nokia

October 17th, 2011 by | Before Bigs Exclusive, Concert/Festival Review, Reviews |

Last night I saw DJ Ivy, Mayer Hawthorne and Empire of the Sun at Club Nokia in Downtown LA. It was a fantastic show as I got to meet the members of Empire of the Sun, got drink tickets and got to witness an awesome performance from three rising acts; plus it was all FREE!

After meeting Empire of the Sun and getting their autographs, we then got a coupe of free drink tickets and headed over to the VIP bar where we were introduced to DJ Ivy. Although she doesn’t have any original music, she knows how to start the party with all the catchy music she was bumping in her DJ set. Check out the sexy DJ’s party mixes on her website.

Next we went to the main part of Club Nokia witness Detroit soul/pop/R&B crooner Mayer Hawthorne. Some of his songs were snoozers with how slow the pace of the songs were. However more often than not, his feel-good music was smooth yet fun for an enjoyable sound. Below are my two favorite songs, “Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin'” and “Can’t Stop”.

Mayer Hawthorne – “Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin'”

Mayer Hawthorne – “Can’t Stop” ft. Snoop Dogg

Next came Empire of the Sun which I couldn’t have been more excited for. With a futuristic grandiose opening and performance, these guys were meant to be headliners! I loved almost every song and found it easier to figure out the couple songs I didn’t like than the many I did really like. My three favorites were the opening song, “Standing on the Shore”, “We Are The People” and the last song “Walking On A Dream” which was amazing.

The Cool Kids – “Swimsuits” (featuring Mayer Hawthorne)

June 21st, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

The Cool Kids have dropped the second single called “Swimsuits” off their upcoming album, When Fish Ride Bicycles. This is different style we are used to hearing from. The first single they dropped off the project “Bundle Up” has more the typical The Cool Kids feel to it. However, this track does not disappoint and Mayer Hawthorne provides a great chorus to the track. Enjoy!

With When Fish Ride Bicycles confirmed to drop on July 12th. It appears that the official tracklist has dropped as well. Take a look at it below:

1. Rush Hour Traffic
2. GMC
3. Boomin’ (feat. Tennille)
4. Sour Apples (feat. Travis Barker)
5. Penny Hardaway (feat. Ghostface Killah)
6. Bundle Up
7. Gas Station (feat. Bun B)
8. Get Right
9. Swimsuits (feat. Mayer Hawthorne)
10. Roll Call (feat. Asher Roth, Chip Tha Ripper, Boldy James)
11. Summer Jam (feat. Maxine Ashley) (Prod. by Pharrell Williams)

Mayer Hawthorne – Impressions (The Covers EP)

May 20th, 2011 by | R&B |

Everything about Mayer Hawthorne is smooth. His vocals and the songs he puts a spin on in his latest project, Impressions (DOWNLOAD), just have such a smooth, soulful, relaxing soundtrack. We are not really ones to get to R&B up in here, but if your looking for something smooth, this is it!

Here’s my two favorites off the EP.
Mayer Hawthorne – Work To Do
Mayer Hawthorne – Mr Blue Sky (ELO cover)
Bonus: Here’s an older favorite Mayer Hawthorne song is features him with some “Gangsta Luv” from Snoop Dogg on the rhymes. It’s the Mayer Hawthorne G-Mix, once again, SMOOTH and you can’t hate on smooth.
