I’m usually not into R&B that much but when you got white-boy soul like Mayer Hawthorne with a smooth buttery sound, I can dig it. I especially enjoy Mayer Hawthorne sophomore album, How Do You Do, because I heard many of the songs live when I saw him perform a couple weeks back.
The album is a must-download. Here’s my five favorites off How Do You Do (iTunes).
Last night I saw DJ Ivy, Mayer Hawthorne and Empire of the Sun at Club Nokia in Downtown LA. It was a fantastic show as I got to meet the members of Empire of the Sun, got drink tickets and got to witness an awesome performance from three rising acts; plus it was all FREE!
After meeting Empire of the Sun and getting their autographs, we then got a coupe of free drink tickets and headed over to the VIP bar where we were introduced to DJ Ivy. Although she doesn’t have any original music, she knows how to start the party with all the catchy music she was bumping in her DJ set. Check out the sexy DJ’s party mixes on her website.
Next we went to the main part of Club Nokia witness Detroit soul/pop/R&B crooner Mayer Hawthorne. Some of his songs were snoozers with how slow the pace of the songs were. However more often than not, his feel-good music was smooth yet fun for an enjoyable sound. Below are my two favorite songs, “Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin’” and “Can’t Stop”.
Next came Empire of the Sun which I couldn’t have been more excited for. With a futuristic grandiose opening and performance, these guys were meant to be headliners! I loved almost every song and found it easier to figure out the couple songs I didn’t like than the many I did really like. My three favorites were the opening song, “Standing on the Shore”, “We Are The People” and the last song “Walking On A Dream” which was amazing.
The Cool Kids have dropped the second single called “Swimsuits” off their upcoming album, When Fish Ride Bicycles. This is different style we are used to hearing from. The first single they dropped off the project “Bundle Up” has more the typical The Cool Kids feel to it. However, this track does not disappoint and Mayer Hawthorne provides a great chorus to the track. Enjoy!
With When Fish Ride Bicycles confirmed to drop on July 12th. It appears that the official tracklist has dropped as well. Take a look at it below:
1. Rush Hour Traffic
2. GMC
3. Boomin’ (feat. Tennille)
4. Sour Apples (feat. Travis Barker)
5. Penny Hardaway (feat. Ghostface Killah)
6. Bundle Up
7. Gas Station (feat. Bun B)
8. Get Right
9. Swimsuits (feat. Mayer Hawthorne)
10. Roll Call (feat. Asher Roth, Chip Tha Ripper, Boldy James)
11. Summer Jam (feat. Maxine Ashley) (Prod. by Pharrell Williams)
Everything about Mayer Hawthorne is smooth. His vocals and the songs he puts a spin on in his latest project, Impressions (DOWNLOAD), just have such a smooth, soulful, relaxing soundtrack. We are not really ones to get to R&B up in here, but if your looking for something smooth, this is it!
