Here’s the latest song from hip-hop/rock band b.FUNK, “The Campaign”. It’s got a slick rock vibe with some hip-hop vocalism. I love when hip-hop can be mixed with other elements like rock or electronic and this is another example of that, but more on the raw rock band style.
“The Campaign” will be off b.FUNK‘s upcoming mixtape, Check Yo Mind, due out real soon.
Here’s a rocking new video from a group that we featured on Best You Never Heard 6. It’s genre-blending hip-hop band DownBeat Keys, one of the best up-and-coming hip-hop bands coming out to NYC!
This latest video, shot by Chris Meidell of MTV and Jason Chung, is a must-watch! There’s so much feeling and rocking sounds to the hip-hop/R&B track, “Deer In The Headlights” and I can tell the best way to truly appreciate this DBK’s potential is by seeing them live.
Here’s the next best thing though, a live studio performance. Watch the DownBeat Keys Live Studio Performance “Deer In The Headlights” below. (more…)
Shadows On Stars, represented by the same guy managing Moxie Black are a catchy genre-blending duo from Portland, Oregon. Here’s what their manager told me about the band:
Shadows On Stars is an indie pop/rock duo from Portland, Oregon consisting of Brian Vincent and Randa Leigh. With their genre defying tracks meandering from Pop to hip-hop to new wave, Shadows On Stars have evolved creativity to a point where classifications are a thing of the past, and listeners are jumping on board. In fact, they wrote to the Internets, “We don’t really give a fuck. You can focus on genre-fying us and we’ll just focus on making good music.”
By inserting new wave, pop, punk rock, and hip-hop flavor into their catchy, upbeat tracks, they capture the spirit of modern day genre-blending perfectly. They could probably get by on style alone, but the strength of the work really lies in the songwriting. SOS has melodies that stick to the music section of your brain like chewed up pink bubblegum, but they also work with drums and bass lines that could be thrown into a hip-hop song and effortless, brazen delivery that every good punk rocker strives to nail down.
Listen and download the three tracks Shadows On Stars has released so far. These three tracks are off their LP, which you comes out early 2012.
Just looking at the title of this mixtape, I know its going to be real, and it sure as hell didn’t disappoint. One of the most powerful pieces of music I’ve heard recently. James Wade mixes gospel and rap to create a masterpiece. I challenge everyone reading this to actually LISTEN to this music. Listen to the lyrics, listen to the message, and let it get to you.
So put your headphones in, lock yourself in your room, and vibe to James Wade for an hour. My personal favorite tracks (and James’) include: Grippin on My Rosary (ft. J-Sic), Oscar Grant (ft. Lauren Eylise & Aaron Grant), and Cash Rules (ft. Kassidy Henderson and Found God (prod. Ronnie Pinnell).
Wade goes globally deep on this mixtape, tackling subjects such as police brutality, poverty, and modern culture. Fusing many different styles of rap, including some dubstep, on the Starry Eyed sampled “Lights On.”

Atlanta band The FountNHead is a trio of blissfully sarcastic 20-somethings who embody the new movement of progressive music spreading across the nation, and more specifically coming out of the Southeast. Their sound is described as punk-infused hip-hop; southern bass and hip-hop rhythms meshed with punk rock guitars and crazy antics always getting heads thumping and bodies moving.
A rising UK DJ who has a electronic mix of sounds is quite talented. He already has over 60,000 fans on facebook, is playing all over the world and has a real catchy electronic sound with a little bit of dubstep, electro, house and overall real upbeat. Here’s my three favorites from Feed Me who kind of reminds me of Deamau5 or Skrillex. Call Your Girlfriend (Feed Me Remix) by robyn
Superfuture music duo Smokey Robotic dropped their newest project, The Shark & The Helicopter LP a few weeks back and once again they create this unique sound with some unusual lyrics. They are the kind of music group where they either grow on you or you dislike them more and more. However I’m on the end that is a big fan and see lots of potential.
Listen and DOWNLOADThe Shark & The Helicopter LP. My personal favorites include the title track, “Bazooka”, “Fuck Hollywood”, “Heroin” and “S.R.”. The Shark & The Helicopter LP
Shout out to Hunter Reece for telling me about Air Dubai. After hearing “Soul & Body”, I immediately searched for all their music. What I found is a genre-blending music group out of Colorado that has already become my favorite genre-blending band from Colorado (MTHDS a super-close 2nd).
The above songs are off Air Dubai‘s last project, Wonder Age (buy), an album I highly recommend checking out. If you like Air Dubai, follow them on facebook and twitter.
“The Fonz” is the latest installment from California’s poster kids, The Freshmen. On this go around, the gang taps into the roots of cool…The Fonz. In a time when the latest fashion trends seem to define what’s “fly” and whats not, The Freshmen see it differently. Front men A. Wolf and Kristo deftly offer their re-definition of “fly”, over a charging break beat and a jukebox rock melody. Carlos Olivero checks in to offer up a bridge that confidently assures you that The Freshmen are “the coolest thing since ice”.
Like most Freshmen tunes, this record manages to blend genres and time periods to create something fresh. All in all this song is a nod to a time when being cool wasn’t something you wore it was something you lived. The Freshmen – The Fonz ft. Carlos Olivero
Talk about an interesting band that has a really diverse background giving them a diverse sound. Recently, The Kickdrums released The Ghost Mixtape (download), which has more of a hip-hop base than I expected on some songs, which makes it really cool. Overall a mixtape that has something for most music fans. Here’s my 2 favorites:
