Video: Faulkner – “Revolutionary” *catchy rock-pop

February 2nd, 2017 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video, Rock |

I had heard of Faulkner doing shows in LA but never pursued it as I didn’t know much about them. However, when their team sent “Revolutionary” over, I knew I had to write about this rock-pop track which is getting quite the buzz for an independent artist.

The bicoastal four piece have been getting a ton of love for their newest single, “Revolutionary” (off their debut album “REVANCHIST”) which is everything you could ever want from a grunge infused pop-rock track. The song has been even been featured on iconic L.A. radio station KROQ and has well over two million views on YouTube.

I caught them do a 5-6 song exclusive set in Hollywood, performing a track that will be with a fairly big rapper later this year (sorry I can’t reveal) and a couple others tracks there were quite catchy. They have a good stage presence and hopefully will get some tour dates going so they can gain further exposure.

Show & Album Review: Basic Vacation at It’s A School Night & their debut EP

November 4th, 2013 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie, Concert/Festival Review, Electronic Rock, Electropop, Rock |

A week and a half ago I saw emerging electronic pop/rock act Basic Vacation. Based on what I heard in their 5-track debut EP and their intimate performance at Bardot for the KCRW curated It’s a School Night, they will become a huge mainstream act in the realm of Imagine Dragons mixed with Fun. I repeat, this group will become a huge mainstream act!

I actually dug almost everything they performed including their hit, “I Believe”, “It’s All Happening” (probably their next single), “You’re In My Head” and “Worlds Collide”. These 4 tracks are on their 5 track EP which I highly recommend listening to below. Their live set was fun alternative pop rock with many people singing the oohs and other words that are easy to sing along to. I also enjoyed when Basic Vacation covered “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears, thanks @JakeCraney for the reminder of that classic gem getting cover treatment.

Actually Bardot didn’t do this band justice, they deserve to play in front of way larger crowds and I feel very lucky to get to see them free on a Monday night in Hollywood at a venue that holds no more than 200 people. Stream the Basic Vacation EP (iTunes) below and watch their video for “I Believe”.

I highly recommend attending It’s A School Night, it was my first time there and I had a nice time getting to see a band that wouldn’t normally be free to see. They usually curate shows getting artists before they blow up, I wish I had KCRW’s resources to do something like that.

Video: The Trouble With Templeton – Bleeders *Folk Indie

October 16th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Music Video |

Thomas Calder aka The Trouble With Templeton swept Filter Magazine’s Culture Collide away last weekend. Hailing from Australia, Thomas captivated the assorted onlookers, leaving a long-lasting impression in Los Angeles. This week, The Trouble With Templeton is traveling to New York for the esteemed CMJ Music Marathon. Before you race there to catch a glimpse of his fervent performance, watch the haunting video for “Bleeders,” off the band’s debut album Bleeders [I Wrote A Novel EP].

Foggy silhouettes of Thomas as he walks through a cemetery amongst elegant zombie ballet capture the essence of this strolling ballad as he sings, “I don’t feel your heart anymore / ‘Cause you are so far gone.”

Video: Thunderbird Gerard – Thunderbird

July 16th, 2012 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

Thunderbird Gerard is a hip-hop artist in a new wave of rappers that replaced gold chains, luxury cars and half-naked women with having a sort of hipster-hop, popularized by Kanye and most evident in Kid Cudi, hipster-hop is fighting to become mainstream.

Thanks to @JewlzieSweets, I got to hear a few tracks from Thunderbird Gerard, a rapper from New York but currently residing in Berlin, Germany. He’s got some real skill and although he hasn’t released a song in two months, he dropped the video to “Thunderbird” last month and it’s not him and his posse just standing in front of the camera in his neighborhood but the video actually has some quality in it.

When a rapper shows me a quality video, I’m interested; when not only the video, but the song, is really good, then I’m paying attention. Stream “Thunderbird”.

Mixtape: YONAS – The Transition

July 6th, 2012 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Hip-Hop/Rap |

NYC lyricist YONAS has finally dropped his long awaited follow up to “The Proven Theory“. This mixtape entitled “The Transition” is stylistically remarkably different from his previous works. Finding inspiration in both Electro and Top 40 music, YONAS has taken it upon himself to define his role and delineate from the misconception that he’s a Christian rapper.

This could be the year that YONAS make “The Transition” from an underground phenom to a mainstream success story. Stream and download the mixtape below; my favorites include “Don’t Give A Damn”, “Feels Right” featuring Logic, and “Pumped Up Kicks”.

Hidden Gem: Dave Edwards *Brooklyn electro/house/pop DJ

April 2nd, 2012 by | Electropop, Hidden Gem, House, Remix |

If you haven’t heard of Dave Edwards yet, you soon will. Dave’s signature sound, which combines elements of American pop, classic French House, and modern House and Electro production techniques, is undeniably unique.

2012 looks to be the biggest year yet for Edwards rising career, with a string of original releases and remixes planned, as well as live performances and touring. His first original release of the year, “American Girl” with Silver Medallion, was a major hit in my eyes and built on the momentum with the releases to come.

Speaking of those releases, below is his latest track, a remix to the classic Fleetwood Mac song “Dreams”. Also featured below is an instrumental of his 2nd original release of the year, “First Time”.

Get Hot and Bothered with MAKE OUT *punk/new wave/indie rock

November 14th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video, New Wave, Rock |

305244_241651472550877_139813192734706_666468_625066418_n Like the firecrackers lit in the beginning of their newest video for “You Can’t Be Friends With Everyone,” MAKE OUT (yes, all caps) explode with short bursts of raucous guitar pop that aims to hit squarely in the pleasure center of your brain. They emerged out of the ashes of dearly departed Danish dance pop band Junior Senior when Jesper Mortensen (the Junior in Junior Senior) moved to New York City and met Leah Hennessey (step-daughter of The New York Doll’s David Johansen). The sound they created is a refreshing contrast to a lot of music out today– songs that unpretentiously surge with a rush of pure pop mixed with bratty punk grit and New Wave synths. They have only a three-song EP and a single to their name, making their total musical output thus far clock in at just under 9 minutes, but it’s enough to leave me begging for my next fix of MAKE OUT. Stream/download my personal favorite track, “I Don’t Want Anybody That Wants Me”. Below, watch the band tear up the streets of New York, smashing and throwing just about everything in their wake in the video for their newest single “You Can’t Be Friends With Everyone”.
