Hidden Gem: ASTR *NYC electronic/alternative duo

August 16th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Dance, Electropop, Hidden Gem, Music Video |

ASTR is an electronic/alternative duo from New York City. Blending electronic music, cinematic themes and pop melodies, they have created a sound that balances the fine line between underground dance and indie cool. Described as “sexy, electronic yet eerie” their brand of “dark pop” has been compared to The Weeknd and Robyn.

I first heard “Razor” and really became intrigued by their new wave electro-pop/indie cool sound. I then heard “Goodnight”, didn’t like it, but also heard “Crumble” and a cover to a Beck song and became a serious fan of this band’s potential.

Stream all their song releases below. My favorite is “Razor” (DOWNLOAD).

Below is their first video, and it was produced solely by them, comprised of clips from other YouTube videos and footage from their iPhones. “Razor” has a great pop feeling with a dark indie lyrical undertone, and beautifully energetic electronic accompaniment– it has something for lovers of all genres, and it’ll still get you moving on the dance floor! Similar to Ellie Goulding‘s new tracks with sweet feminine vocal sounds and eery electronic production. Watch “Razor” below. (more…)

Mixtape: YONAS – The Transition

July 6th, 2012 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Hip-Hop/Rap |

NYC lyricist YONAS has finally dropped his long awaited follow up to “The Proven Theory“. This mixtape entitled “The Transition” is stylistically remarkably different from his previous works. Finding inspiration in both Electro and Top 40 music, YONAS has taken it upon himself to define his role and delineate from the misconception that he’s a Christian rapper.

This could be the year that YONAS make “The Transition” from an underground phenom to a mainstream success story. Stream and download the mixtape below; my favorites include “Don’t Give A Damn”, “Feels Right” featuring Logic, and “Pumped Up Kicks”.

Live Studio Video: DownBeat Keys – Deer In The Headlights *MUST-WATCH

April 29th, 2012 by | Chill/Jam/Reggae, Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video, R&B, Rock |

Here’s a rocking new video from a group that we featured on Best You Never Heard 6. It’s genre-blending hip-hop band DownBeat Keys, one of the best up-and-coming hip-hop bands coming out to NYC!

This latest video, shot by Chris Meidell of MTV and Jason Chung, is a must-watch! There’s so much feeling and rocking sounds to the hip-hop/R&B track, “Deer In The Headlights” and I can tell the best way to truly appreciate this DBK’s potential is by seeing them live.

Here’s the next best thing though, a live studio performance. Watch the DownBeat Keys Live Studio Performance “Deer In The Headlights” below. (more…)

Video: Smokey Robotic – The Shark & The Helicopter *trippy alternative awesome

March 28th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video |

What the fuck is going on in this video? What are these lyrics about? I have so many questions and yet am so intrigued and find myself watching the video again and again. Smokey Robotic never ceases to surprise us with their video and lyrical content. With their latest video, “The Shark & The Helicopter”, they show ice-cream melting in the background of radient colors as just one example of the random intriguing visuals they provide all set in the backdrop of New York City.

Watch “The Shark & The Helicopter” below. Would love to hear some of your comments regarding the song and video!

White Rhino – “New York City”

November 28th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap |

“New York City” is the lead single for The White Rhino‘s next album The Journey of Julian Rhine, which is due out next month. The female singer on the hook is Kristine Kubat, who is a constant part of his live band, and an amazing singer.
New York City by White Rhino NYC
The album was produced entirely with Jonathan Rice, who produced Rhino’s last album as well. Together, the two of them have a special skill in turning basic live instrumentation into a completely original, massive sound. Rhino’s music has definitely evolved from his earlier stuff and it sounds like he can craft a sound that no one else in the game is banging. The album will be coming out for free next month, and a friend of ours called it “a deeply layered, dark, comedic, and drippingly original work.”

Get Hot and Bothered with MAKE OUT *punk/new wave/indie rock

November 14th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video, New Wave, Rock |

305244_241651472550877_139813192734706_666468_625066418_n Like the firecrackers lit in the beginning of their newest video for “You Can’t Be Friends With Everyone,” MAKE OUT (yes, all caps) explode with short bursts of raucous guitar pop that aims to hit squarely in the pleasure center of your brain. They emerged out of the ashes of dearly departed Danish dance pop band Junior Senior when Jesper Mortensen (the Junior in Junior Senior) moved to New York City and met Leah Hennessey (step-daughter of The New York Doll’s David Johansen). The sound they created is a refreshing contrast to a lot of music out today– songs that unpretentiously surge with a rush of pure pop mixed with bratty punk grit and New Wave synths. They have only a three-song EP and a single to their name, making their total musical output thus far clock in at just under 9 minutes, but it’s enough to leave me begging for my next fix of MAKE OUT. Stream/download my personal favorite track, “I Don’t Want Anybody That Wants Me”. Below, watch the band tear up the streets of New York, smashing and throwing just about everything in their wake in the video for their newest single “You Can’t Be Friends With Everyone”.

Hidden Gem: Skizzy Mars *alternative rap

August 11th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap |

Manhattan, NYC rapper Skizzy Mars is an interesting act. As an alternative rap artist, he brings a unique lyrical flow with laid back almost indie sounding instrumentals. Kind of reminds me of OnCue and Macklemore but Skizzy is doing his thing in New York City. I know we are a little late on Skizzy Mars but hopefully you haven’t heard these four dope songs from the musician whose influences range from Kanye West and Frank Ocean to Beirut and The Killers.

Here’s five of my favorites from Skizzy Mars. The songs are listed from newest to oldest but if you listen from his oldest song at the bottom to the newest song at the top, you will notice how the quality steadily improves, a big reason why I consider him a hidden gem and an artist that’s a must watch.

Hidden Gem: SAMUEL *ubpeat indie pop

August 10th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Pop |

Indie Pop artist SAMUEL is back with some new songs, specifically three new songs. I’m a big fan of “Still Here” and “Champagne Kisses” and kind of like “Nowhere Town”. We featured SAMUEL back in September on our first edition of Best You Never Heard, which also featured many acts that are big hits now. I think this Summer and beyond you will hear a lot more from SAMUEL and I’m excited what the future has in store for him.

So here’s “Nowhere Town”, “Still Here” and “Champagne Kisses”.

Josh Cocktail – Fire *future pop sensation?

January 31st, 2011 by | Music Video, Pop |

A few of my favorite blogs already posted this song and I finally realized it was time to post Josh Cocktail. For some reason, it reminds me of Mike Posner in terms of instrumentals, but Josh Cocktail has much better vocals and is more pop. Posner isn’t the best comparison but if Josh Cocktail had Posner’s resources, I can definately see him reaching similar heights and more.

Anybody else think Josh Cocktail will be on the radio within a few years, I sure hope so. Follow him on facebook and twitter.
