Hidden Gem: Bombs & Bottles *Electro-Pop artist/DJ/producer

October 27th, 2011 by | Dubstep, Electropop, Hidden Gem, House |

There’s a young electro-pop Artist/DJ/Producer by the name of Bombs & Bottles from New York City. He just released his 5-track EP titled “Tonight”. The EP chronicles a night out on the town from both a man and woman’s perspective, their chase through the club and a passionate fling at the end of the night and encompasses many musical genres from House, Pop, Electro, and Dubstep to name a few.

Below is the single released early this month from Bombs & Bottles, “When The Lights Go Out”, his best track which has an R&B/Dubstep feel that is certified 5-star on my iTunes. The production is so banging, this song is proof that Bombs & Bottles has serious potential for mainstream success.

Here’s the full playlist to listen and download from the five track EP, Tonight.

Hidden Gem: Skizzy Mars *alternative rap

August 11th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap |

Manhattan, NYC rapper Skizzy Mars is an interesting act. As an alternative rap artist, he brings a unique lyrical flow with laid back almost indie sounding instrumentals. Kind of reminds me of OnCue and Macklemore but Skizzy is doing his thing in New York City. I know we are a little late on Skizzy Mars but hopefully you haven’t heard these four dope songs from the musician whose influences range from Kanye West and Frank Ocean to Beirut and The Killers.

Here’s five of my favorites from Skizzy Mars. The songs are listed from newest to oldest but if you listen from his oldest song at the bottom to the newest song at the top, you will notice how the quality steadily improves, a big reason why I consider him a hidden gem and an artist that’s a must watch.

Hidden Gem: SAMUEL *ubpeat indie pop

August 10th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Pop |

Indie Pop artist SAMUEL is back with some new songs, specifically three new songs. I’m a big fan of “Still Here” and “Champagne Kisses” and kind of like “Nowhere Town”. We featured SAMUEL back in September on our first edition of Best You Never Heard, which also featured many acts that are big hits now. I think this Summer and beyond you will hear a lot more from SAMUEL and I’m excited what the future has in store for him.

So here’s “Nowhere Town”, “Still Here” and “Champagne Kisses”.

Hidden Gem: Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad *Chill Reggae Jams

June 15th, 2011 by | Chill/Jam/Reggae, Hidden Gem |

When post people think of Reggae, they think of sipping Coronas on the beach in the summer, but there is much more to it, and New York’s Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad is showing the world just that. Of course, they can do summer BBQ jams, but they get darker too, with more intense dub stuff as well. Check out a sampler of their Giant Panda’s music after the jump:

Yonas – “C.A.W.Z.E.” (The Charasmatic Artist That Went from Zero to Everything)

March 31st, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

Yonas continues grindin’ releasing yet another new track. This time it’s “C.A.W.Z.E.” which stands for (The Charasmatic Artist that Went from Zero to Everything). This song is more of a chill, laid-back beat similar to a vintage Common sound. I have always believed that Yonas has many similarities to Common and he is only improving his music. I look forward to more music coming out by him in the near future. Enjoy!

Hoodie Allen – NY is Killing Me x Space Boy (mashup)

March 14th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap, Mashup, Remix |

“Hooray” is pretty much the first word that comes out of my mouth when I get an email from Hoodie Allen with a new track. Here’s what Hoodie has to say about “NY is Killing Me” (download):

Today, I am proud to present you with the second leak off of my upcoming mixtape Leap Year. “NY is Killing Me” tells the story of the love-hate relationship I have with the city that raised me and the creatures that make it so hard to be there and even tougher to leave.
“NY is Killing Me” is a remix of the Jamie XX re-working of the Gil Scott-Heron song of the same name. I hope you enjoy my added perspective to an already killer track and look forward to more music in the coming month.

This isn’t my favorite Hoodie Allen track and doesn’t come close to my top 5 Hoodie Allen tracks. Even though, Hoodie’s vocals aren’t appealing and the beat tastes like week-old pizza, the rapping is dope as always with some interesting lyrics. I respect that Hoodie continues to utilize alternative/indie tracks in putting together dope rap songs.

If you were disappointed by “NY is Killing Me”, here’s the first leak off Hoodie’s upcoming mixtape, Leap Year. Also here’s mashup featuring Hoodie Allen vs Bassnectar vs The Pixies. The track is called “Space Boy” and Hoodie’s rapping over a mix of Bassnectar & The Pixies instrumentals is cool. The last 10 seconds are dope with Hoodie accapella.

Hidden Gem: Smokey Robotic *electronic pop hop

February 27th, 2011 by | Electropop, Hidden Gem, Hip-Hop/Rap |

Watch the music video above for “Forever My Love” (DOWNLOAD) and I think you will agree Smokey Robotic is a pretty cool music group. Their music mixes genre’s with mostly electronic synthed up instrumentals over a mix of pop, hip-hop and R&B. Overall they are a funky band and they have become one of my favorites where I can’t wait til they release new music.

Below are two of my favorites from the New York/Vancouver genre-blending music group. I say genre-blending because it would be an injustice to stick them into a genre when their music is so diverse.
Smokey Robotic – Voices (newest song)
Smokey Robotic – Outside the Lines (Uptown)

Wiz Khalifa – [Big Screen x I Ain’t Them (featuring Poetic)]

January 23rd, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap |

It seems like Wiz Khalifa pumps out new songs everyday. Today he released “Big Screen” which he raps in autotune. I never expected Wiz to make a song like T-Pain or Lil Wayne but it is actually quite catchy. He also dropped “I Ain’t Them” (featuring Poetic) a couple of days ago which has the typical laid back feel he is used to making in his music. It also introduced me to a young talented rapper, Poetic,  from New York that I was unaware until this song came out. Enjoy!
