A couple new artists to BtB and a few that have been featured on the site multiple times and will get featured many more times with where it seems there music is heading.
First we got a newbie on the site, Jay Fresh, who collaborated with the Pretty Lights record label, specifically producer/DJ SuperVision, to create “Amazing”, which samples Pretty Lights. Its got a chill hip-hop vibe and shows the potential of skater turned rapper Jay Fresh, who has much more planned with Pretty Lights work. “Amazing” will be off Jay Fresh‘s upcoming, The Delta Project, which is Jay Fresh vs Pretty Lights. Watch the music video here. Jay Fresh – Amazing – “The Delta Project” Jay Fresh Vs Pretty Lights by thejayfresco
Next comes Jacob Es with “In The City” off his upcoming project Piece of Mind, dropping real soon. If you are not familiar, this song samples the 1960s hit “Summer In The City” from Lovin’ Spoonful. Loving the sample, really digging his rap and overall looking forward to this upcoming project Jacob Es has been touting lately.
Next comes Brandies University student-athlete Aziz with “Wind Blows” which samples the indie/alternative chill song from Yukon Blonde.D-Why first sampled this song back in mid-September and Aziz took a crack at it, releasing the song on September 19. Personally, I think the Aziz one has slightly improved production and better rapping. However you be the judge and comment below on your favorite use of the sample.
Next comes Alex Frecon who released his debut EP in late August, which included the Passion Pit sampled “I’ll Stay”. I can’t ignore a Passion Pit sample because they are amazing and although Alex Frecon can’t be described as amazing, I’m digging the production and the rapping is solid. I’ll Stay by AlexFrecon
Lastly one of my favorite artists in this post, Theo Martins, who recently moved to LA to better focus on his budding music career. This dude is very talented, not only with the amazing sampled production he has shown in the past but his rapping is dope too! In this, he samples Foster the People (not Pumped Up Kicks!). The production is so catchy utilizing FTP and his rapping gives the original another direction not entirely touched on yet. Theo Martins – For Helena
I’m a huge fan of Hey Champ, they may be my favorite music trio from Chicago. A couple weeks back, we introduced you to them with their best original material. Now here’s five of the best songs they are either featured in or they have remixed.
Let’s begin with their electro-pop remix to Mike Posner‘s “Cooler Than Me”. It’s got a pretty cool vibe, mostly enjoy this because I love the original so much. Although I prefer the original, this is a minimalistic remix that provides a change of pace than all the other versions of “Cooler Than Me”. DOWNLOAD Cooler Than Me (Hey Champ Remix)
Next comes a song Hey Champ is featured in, “Getting You Off”, which is by 80kidz. Another pop song with smooth enjoyable instrumentals, almost reminds me of Empire Of The Sun but more relaxed vocals. Download
As most of you know, whenever you talk to me and mention Passion Pit, one of the first things I usually say is “I love Passion Pit!”. So whenever I hear a sample or remix of Passion Pit, I usually jump on the song and enjoy it. Kenton Dunson took a dope Passion Pit song to make “Top Of The World”. After making a real quality mixtape/album with Creative Destruction 2, his first song since then is real chill with a dope sample. Well done Kenton, only big things lie ahead for the hip-hop/R&B artist. Top of the World Ft. Passion Pit by Kenton Dunson
It’s Hump-Day House Wednesday so get your ass on the dance floor and do the hump n’ grind with some upbeat catchy House music from VanGuard. Here’s my three favorites by the house duo from Wales. Strange Talk – Eskimo Boy (Vanguard Remix)
I love the original to the above video and I love the remix even more, already watching it at least 8-10 times.
Anyways, best way to help lessen the many remixes/mashups I need to blog about, here’s five songs I really love that have been remixed. In some cases the original is better but other cases, the remix does add something special the original might lack. This is pt. 1 because all these remixes are kind of old and should have been blogged about at least 2 months ago.
First we got my all-time favorite Empire of the Sun track, “Walking on a Dream”, remixed by Kids At The Bar. Love how the hand-clap they throw in eventually get’s way more electronic and complex as the song progresses. Empire of the Sun – Walking On A Dream (Kids At The Bar Remix)
Next Borgore remixes Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead”, slowing the pace down a bit and overall making for a chill remix with cool electro and some subtle dubstep that isn’t overbearing to the beauty of Passion Pit‘s sound… sorry I love Passion Pit so much, somebody take me to see them live. Passion Pit – Sleepyhead (Borgore Remix) Foster the People came out with “Pumped Up Kicks” a long time ago yet the song suddenly gets mainstream radio play this year. Either way, MNDR decided to do a remix on it, adding some cool 80’s type instrumentals and keeping the vocals fairly intact for a solid remix. Foster the People – Pumped Up Kicks (MNDR Remix)
I know remixes of Matt & Kim have gotten really old, and maybe the remixes continue to come out because all of us are dying to hear new music from them now if we haven’t seen them live. Either way, well done remix by Rusty Lazer & JJ Marshall who have some Big Freedia rapping too. The song gets taken into a different direction and the rapping almost seems like it’s not needed, but this is pretty cool to play in a dance/club atmosphere where your happy it keeps you moving. Matt & Kim – Cameras (ft. Big Freedia)(Rusty Lazer & JJ Marshall remix)
One of my favorite groups from New Zealand, The Naked & Famous put out a wonderful track in 2010, “Young Blood” which Chiddy Bang remixed and rapped on (amazing!) and a few months back, Dave Sitek, guitarist in indie rock band, TV On The Radio, remixed “Young Blood”. I have a feeling he put some of his own guitar work on the remix, which is a great addition to the original and some electronic beats hear and there. Overall I like how Dave Sitek didn’t take hardly anything out of the original. The Naked & Famous – Young Blood (Dave Sitek Remix)
When Theo Martins released “The Spotlight” recently, I knew had to jump on listening to this. Once again Theo Martins thrives sampling a variety of non-hip-hop tracks and bringing this indie hip-hop/pop to the song he samples.
Lately I have noticed a more electro/hip-hop feel with his music which I like a lot since he is working towards what the music industry’s mainstream sound is evolving into; more upbeat dance club instrumentals.
In “The Spotlight” he goes in a more electro synth instrumentals with the Class Actress sample. Love the instrumentals, rapping over it is cooler than Theophilus London which he reminds me of in this song but this is a bit more alternative with more mainstream rapping. Theo Martins – The Spotlight ft. Class Actress
Below listen and download two older favorites of mine from Theo Martins, one which is a remix to a remix that includes the likes of Passion Pit and Bruno Mars and the other more of an indie popish song with some hip-hop that samples Wakey!Wakey! Also new music below! (more…)
