Covers *Cris Cab, Neon Hitch, PJ Simas, Tokyo Police Club, Weezer

Five new covers from artists ranging from Reggae to rock and much of what’s in between.

First we go with Cris Cab‘s reggae/jam cover to Foster The People‘s “Pumped Up Kicks”. I like how the chill vibes and overall Cris Cab gives it a new sound which is refreshing since the only thing I hear with “Pumped Up Kicks” these days is remixes and the song being played all over the radio. Watch the music video here.

Cris Cab – Pumped Up Kicks

I got mixed reactions when I played this to the Weapons of Audio fam recently. However it’s kind of catchy, the ginger is interesting but overall some of you might be passing on this shit. However, Neon Hitch‘s vocals are all over the place, slows the song up and takes out the dubstep. The song is more minimalistic than the original, the lyrics sound even more dumb and after writing a few sentences on this cover, I may be less a fan. Watch the music video for the cover, it makes it better.

Neon Hitch – Gucci Gucci

PJ Simas is killing it among the white boy acoustic guitar rappers. If you can’t think of any others in that category, trust me when I say PJ Simas is talented and might be a better producer than performer. However he puts an acoustic chilled out version of Mac Miller‘s “Frick Park Market” which is real nice to relax to.

PJ Simas – Frick Park Market

I’m a fan of Tokyo Police Club so when I saw this LCD Soundsystem cover they did, I immediately became a fan. It picks up real nicely and since LCD isn’t releasing new music, this is refreshing. Really liking the alternative & punk vibe.

Tokyo Police Club – All My Friends

Lastly comes a cover by one of my all-time favorite rock bands, Weezer. They cover The Band‘s “The Weight”, one of the best classic rock songs of all-time. “The Weight” is also one of those songs that seems really easy to sing when your drunk but it’s not, trust me, I have tried to sing the lyrics to this song drunk but stumbled in so many ways.

PJ Simas – “Sail Away”

August 2nd, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix |

Sacramento native, PJ Simas continues on his grind with another new release off his End of School Remix Series. This one is called “Sail Away” and I was quite impressed with this one. It has a rock mixed with rap feel to it with the instrumentals getting you pumped up and the rapping being on point which we come to expect from PJ. Keep up the good work, your doing great. Enjoy!

PJ Simas – “Liar Liar” (Remix) [Music Video]

July 26th, 2011 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video |

While on a trip Disneyland and California Adventure in Anaheim, California, PJ Simas decides to make the most of the trip and shoot a whole new music video for the remix to “Liar Liar”. Though the video wasn’t the best quality, it was well organized and orchestrated for filming at a extremely crowded amusement park. Enjoy!

Electronic Pop Hop *PJ Simas, Zion I, Pitbull, Ariez Onasis, Damani

April 22nd, 2011 by | Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop |

Electronic Pop Hop, a genre that is quickly becoming mainstream with where the hip-hop industry is heading into more pop/dance beats. I wish there was still a little mainstream gangsta rap, but I guess that’s not cool anymore, so here’s 5 great electronic pop hop songs to get your night started right.

Cal Poly student-musician PJ Simas recently released “Ocean Drop”. It’s got a more pop feel than more of his older stuff but also catchier. Can’t wait until his upcoming mixtape, Triple Play, comes out April 29th.

Here’s a new artist on the site, Damani. I like the piano beat and the relaxed instrumentals and Damani has a solid flow to make this a chill track.
Damani – biggest mistake
Another chill song with a dope beat, some of the best bay area rapping in Zion I and cool synth-ed up falsetto hook. Also The Grouch‘s rhymes are solid.
Zion I & The Grouch – Rockit Man feat. Silk-E
Time to pick up the beat. Ariez Onasis, Fatman Scoop and Clinton Sparks with a dance club banger. The production is killer, the lyrics are silly but that doesn’t matter, go crazy on this track.
Ariez Onasis – Go Crazy (Ft. Fatman Scoop & Clinton Sparks)
Lastly for the most mainstream track we have featured in a while, Pitbull, transcending beyond Reggaeton to what the record labels want, upbeat hip-pop tracks to dance/sing to. Plus Ne-Yo vocals in this are strong as usual.
Pitbull – Give Me Everything (feat Nayer & Ne-Yo)

Relax under the covers – The Kickdrums, Mike Posner, PJ Simas & Yeasayer

February 27th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, Rock |

Above is a mashup/cover by produced by PJ Simas and performed by him on the instrumentals and rapping and Jorden Corey with the vocals. In the song they specifically focus on Skylar Grey’s part from “Coming Home” by Diddy Dirty Money and her feature in “I Need A Doctor” by Dr. Dre and Eminem. Download “Coming Home x I Need A Doctor” (cover).

Below are three other really good songs that are covers.

First is The Kickdrum’s cover of Nirvana’s song “Love Buzz”, big fan of the instrumentals and the vocals go along really well.
The Kickdrums – Love Buzz (Nirvana Cover)
Recently Mike Posner did a cover of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep”. Before you dismiss Posner for what turned out to be a flop of a debut album save for a few pop hits, Posner returns to his awesome production roots for a relaxed pop cover.

Lastly Yeasayer covers Seal’s “Crazy”. Seal is a great artist and while I don’t think the Yeasayer cover is better than the original, it provides a alternative/folk perspective of one of the best Seal songs.

PJ Simas – Bruno Mars Medley

October 19th, 2010 by | Mashup, Pop, Remix |

PJ Simas & Cato Webb cover and mashup up three songs off of Bruno Mars’ “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” which are “Grenade,” “Liquor Store Blues,” and “The Lazy Song.” He does a great job on mixing these together and creating a solid flow. This is the 5th song released off of PJ’s Back 2 School Remix series.

Mike Posner – Please Don’t Go (music video)

October 18th, 2010 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Music Video, Pop |
Mikey Posner recently put out his official music video for his 2nd single off his debut album. This is my favorite track on the album and I’m glad he put out a music video for it. Love that the video was extensively shot in my hometown too!

Download “Please Don’t Go” if you haven’t already. If you really love the song like I do, then check out PJ Simas cover of the song and download the 8 Bar Z Remix to it. Enjoy!

PJ Simas – PJ, Please Don’t Go

September 29th, 2010 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Remix |
Northern Cali hip-hop musician PJ Simas recently released a remix to Mike Posner’s “Please Don’t Go”, my favorite song off Posner’s debut album. I really enjoy PJ’s take on the song as he makes the whole song himself including the instrumentals, the vocals and producing the whole track. This dude is highly talented and I see only bigger things coming from him.
