Josh Hoke Releases New Album “Ghosts and Glory”

January 29th, 2013 by | Alternative/Indie |

Have you ever played an album over and over and not been sick of it? From Waiting Here through Into the Night, Josh Hoke gives us just that feeling. His new album “Ghosts and Glory” will leave you wanting–begging for more.

Hailing from Portland, originally a Midwestern man, Josh’s rough, soulful voice paired with his guitar is reminiscent of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Iron and Wine.

If you are anywhere near Portland over the next couple of days there are a few things you do not want to miss. You can catch Josh on KZME 107.1 FM Thursday around 12 noon and also at his album release show that night 8 PM at the Secret Society.

Take a listen to a few songs off his new album, and enjoy!

Introducing Josh and Mer *Portland Indie-Pop duo

January 24th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Pop |

Soon after meeting in their home state of Oregon, Josh Schroeder and Meredith Adelaide discovered that they share common ideas about music, art, life, and their love of the beautiful Pacific Northwest. This connection fostered a creative match that quickly evolved into a musical project as Josh and Mer. Their debut album, Planet Music, was recorded with producer Jason Carter (Frank Black, Pete Yorn, Art Brut) and evokes a dreamy, experimental indie rock sound.

The Portland duo furthered their artistic vision by filming and photographing elements of their collaborative process. “We each bring something to the table that we otherwise couldn’t do alone, and I think that’s why it works,” says Josh, while Meredith adds, “We’re always trying to one-up each other with concepts, visuals, and sounds.

Josh and Mer are delighted to share their first single, “From The Sea,” with us today. DOWNLOAD “From The Sea”. Stream below!

Introducing Nurses *sounds like Animal Collective & Grizzly Bear

November 25th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video |

The Indie-rock trio called the Nurses has grown because of their psychedelic pop sounds and a following of fans that has developed. Two years ago, this Portland-based group joined Bloomington’s Dead Oceans Records. Since then, they have released Apple’s Acre (2009) and recently Dracula (2011). Nurses is made up of Aaron Chapman (vocals, guitar, keyboard), John Bowers (backing vocals, keyboard), and James Mitchell (percussionist & visual artist). Chapman’s high-pitched voice reminds me of Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos. I saw them perform at Bloomington’s Russian Recordings a few weeks ago and thought they sound like if Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear had a music baby, it would sound like Nurses. All three bands are groups you can close your eyes and enjoy because everything psychedelic-sounding seems to go well together.

They even have their own Wikipedia page, which shows that they are a little more well-known then some other bands. They received a 7.2 ratting from Pitchfork, which is pretty good since Pitchfork doesn’t rate most groups very highly. They toured with Swedish folk musician The Tallest Man on Earth in 2010. Starting this month they will be touring in Europe for two months.

My favorite songs from them are “Fever Dreams”, “Man At Arms”, and “Technicolor”. It might take them a few years to get to Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, MGMT, and Passion Pit’s level, but I think they will get there soon. Listen to my three favorites below and comment if you feel they have a future in the music industry.

Hidden Gem: Shadows on Stars *new wave/pop/punk rock/hip-hop

November 17th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, New Wave, Pop, Rock |

Shadows On Stars, represented by the same guy managing Moxie Black are a catchy genre-blending duo from Portland, Oregon. Here’s what their manager told me about the band:

Shadows On Stars is an indie pop/rock duo from Portland, Oregon consisting of Brian Vincent and Randa Leigh. With their genre defying tracks meandering from Pop to hip-hop to new wave, Shadows On Stars have evolved creativity to a point where classifications are a thing of the past, and listeners are jumping on board. In fact, they wrote to the Internets, “We don’t really give a fuck. You can focus on genre-fying us and we’ll just focus on making good music.”

By inserting new wave, pop, punk rock, and hip-hop flavor into their catchy, upbeat tracks, they capture the spirit of modern day genre-blending perfectly. They could probably get by on style alone, but the strength of the work really lies in the songwriting. SOS has melodies that stick to the music section of your brain like chewed up pink bubblegum, but they also work with drums and bass lines that could be thrown into a hip-hop song and effortless, brazen delivery that every good punk rocker strives to nail down.

Listen and download the three tracks Shadows On Stars has released so far. These three tracks are off their LP, which you comes out early 2012.

Masharoni and Cheese
Today’s Mashup Monday goes to DJ Fergie Ferg, who recently released his mashup album, Masharoni and Cheese. I love Mac & Cheese and I like this mashup mixtape almost as much. He is the kind of DJ with a crazy amount of mashing but it all flows perfectly.

Download Masharoni and Cheese

Number 1 reason to download this mashup: “Flippy Floppys”. LISTEN NOW:

My other favorites include “Good Source of Antioxidants”, “La La La Lean”, “I’ve Got Bassssss” and “It’s For The Look”. For more on Portland, Oregon DJ Fergie Ferg, check out his homepage. Enjoy!

Moxie Black – How Did This Happen? (Mixtape)

August 19th, 2010 by | Album/Mixtape/EP Review, Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap |

“Hip-Pop” group Moxie Black has released their debut mixtape, How Did This Happen? earlier this week. I really like musicians that can’t be defined by a single genre and Moxie Black fits that description. I have been a fan of this Portland, Oregon duo since Pigeons & Planes first posted their stuff back in July and am excited to hear more music by them in How Did This Happen?

Below is the mixtape to listen and download. My favorite tracks are “Sleepy Kids” and “So Much Better”. Comment on your favorite tracks by them. Enjoy!  How Did This Happen? by Moxie Black
