Last Thursday I witnessed Isaac Rother & The Phantoms and Fool’s Gold live at The Echoplex as part of Red Bull Sound Select’s monthly LA concert series showcasing underrated bands. It was truly a great show with Isaac Rother & The Phantoms bringing a 60’s and 70’s psychedelic rock pop variety that was catchy and fun. (more…)
In late April I caught the fantastic energetic Los Angeles indie folk rock band, Milo Greene, who played many songs from their new album while also wowing the crowd with old favorite, “1957”.
Headliner Milo Greene entranced the crowd with their complex brand of indie folk rock, replete with four-part harmonies and gorgeous male and female vocals.
My favorite songs included “On The Fence”, “1957” and “Lie To Me”.
On Saturday November 1st, Red Bull Sound Select’s #30DaysInLA kicked off with Australian dance pop/rock band Cut Copy headlining a fantastic show at the Downtown Los Angeles Luxe Hotel parking lot across the street from LA Live. I absolutely love Cut Copy, they are in my top 5 favorite artists I’ve seen live with their upbeat, catchy fun dance tunes and lyrics that are easy to sing along to and uplifting.
I loved almost every single song they played and after seeing them for the first time since 2011, I was so excited to be able to take my close friend @MikeRips, who saw Cut Copy with me back at Pacific Festival 2011 so I knew I had to invite him again. Thanks to Grandstand Media for hooking me up with press passes and I can’t wait to attend further Red Bull Sound Select shows in LA this month and beyond!
Below are a few must-listen Cut Copy tracks. (more…)
So we are soon approaching something very awesome in LA featuring over 60 musicians in a 30 day period in November. Starting November 1st through November 30th, Red Bull Sound Select has put together 30 concerts showcasing various talents and I can’t be more excited. My coworkers at The Grammys and I have been talking about this constantly about what shows were going to, as I’m really excited not only because of the musical variety that RBSS has curated during the month of November but highlighting local acts that need more attention and curating shows at venues all over this vast city of Angels. Below I’m here to tell you which 5 shows you definitely can’t miss! (more…)
Last Friday I attended Red Bull Sound Select’s pop-up show for Chuck Inglish‘s record release party for his latest album, Convertibles. It was a great show (read my review here), and I was afforded the opportunity to interview rising LA hip-hop act Thurz before the show as he was opening for Chuck Inglish. Here’s most of what I (@ImZachSE) talked about with Thurz (@Thurzday) before the show.
Whenever I think of Thurz, I immediately think of the hook in his song, “Goddamn goddamn” and how catchy that hip-hop song is. Last Friday I got to witness Los Angeles rapper Thurz and his band perform live at The Well in Downtown Los Angeles opening for Chuck Inglish (of The Cool Kids) at the Red Bull Sound Select pop-up Show Friday night. It was my first hip-hop show since March and definitely well worth it. Read more below. (more…)
Tomorrow night will be a crazy good punk rock show featuring LA’s very own FIDLAR and rising local artists Cherry Glazerr and Isaac Rother & the Phantoms. Also London-based four-piece Cheatahs has also been added to the bill.
The showcase was curated by new Los Angeles curator Amoeba Music and will feature the smooth stylings of LA-based quintet Isaac Rother & The Phantoms, who harken back to an era when rock ‘n roll was simple, fun and dangerous. Meanwhile, LA trio Cherry Glazerr combines lo-fi shoegaze elements with relentless driving grooves. Fiery alt-rockers Cheatahs will celebrate the recent release of their self-titled debut album, which VICE named February’s Best Album of the Month. They’ll join headliners FIDLAR, who have a reputation for being one of the most exciting punk bands on the planet. I’ve seen FIDLAR before and they know how to rock out with lots of energy, creating a really fun raucous environment.
The show is just $3 with RSVP to redbullsoundselect.com and $12 without RSVPing. So if you have any interest, make sure to RSVP, especially since it’s at one of the most underrated music venues in LA, Echoplex!
Below, watch FIDLAR’s latest video, “Cocaine”, starring comedian/actor Nick Offerman pissing everywhere around LA.
Late last month, Red Bull Sound Select and Filter Magazine came together to curate a fantastic hip-hop show featuring El-P with a special guest appearance from Killer Mike. What I thought would be a 30 minute set from headliner El-P turned into a 45 minute to 1 hour set of Run The Jewels the collaborative alternative hip-hop duo of El-P and Killer Mike, two super talented and super underrated rappers who came up big that night with impeccable flow, dope production that might be some of the best in hip-hop in 2013 and overall pleasing the crowd with their antics and high energy set.
Run The Jewels put out one of the most impressive free albums of 2013 with their self-titled debut and I sure hope El-P and Killer Mike jump back into the studio to work on some more cuts together while they are on tour (schedule below) as Run The Jewels as they bring two sorta different hip-hop audiences together with El-P one of the old school alternative hip-hop acts and founder of Definitive Jux label (signing Murs and Aesop Rock) while Killer Mike is on the cusp of mainstream attention, with features on some of the top acts like Big Sean, Kanye West, Mike Posner and much more. In fact, some details have surfaced regarding Run The Jewels 2.
Anyways, I loved the show and want to give a shout out to @Lauralista for hooking me up with tickets. Stream and download (FREE) the full Run The Jewels album below, my favorite tracks are “Run The Jewels” and “Sea Legs”.
