G-Eazy – Mad ft. Devon Baldwin

June 13th, 2012 by | Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop |

New must-listen track from G-Eazy featuring Devon Baldwin‘s soft vocals adding to this hip-pop track. Here’s what G-Eazy had to say about the song:

“Mad” is about the fantasy of falling in love with a stranger at a party just by heavy eye contact; before any words are even exchanged.  The track is set over a 60’s doo-wop melody with a trap infused beat.  I’m always seeking to connect the culture, styles and sounds of classic 60’s pop music with today’s hip hop.

Stream and DOWNLOAD “Mad” (iTunes).

Here’s Futurecop!‘s first official music video! Not only does this song make you feel like your back in the 1980’s yet, but the person who directed this video, AJ from Saint Motel, did a great job making the video feel like your having some party experience with 80’s nostalgia.

Stream “Starworshipper” ft. Diana Gen & Starrset.

Cities Aviv – Die Young *retro-futuristic rap

October 23rd, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap |

“Die Young” has a crazy beat that has this industrial yet retro beginning of hip-hop sound. It’s retro-futuristic rap from Cities Aviv and I look forward to some more based on how interesting this song is.

What’s a better word to describe it: retro-futuristic rap or hipster-hop?

For genre on iTunes, I put Awesome for this because after hearing it, you feel awesome or you think the song is awesome. Tyson‘s retro-futuristic sound is real catchy and I look forward to more from him. Download: Hulkshare / Mediafire

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears – Booty City

June 17th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Rock |

Shouldn’t really be giving you guys this song since you can buy it on Amazon but it’s such a fun song. I’m a huge fan of the retro sound of Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears and even though this song came out in February, it’s timeless as you could have heard it now or back in the days when funk & soul dominated the airwaves. Either way, listen and download “Booty City”, you won’t be disappointed by the latest from Black Joe Lewis.

Wondering what Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears sound live, watch this video of “Booty City” after the jump. (more…)

GoldenWest update *4 new super-future songs!

June 16th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, Rock |

GoldenWest is one of those super-future bands that are on their way to mainstream attention. If you are not following them on facebook and twitter yet, I highly recommend you do so as they have been on a free-track binge, giving the world dope new tracks about almost weekly. GoldenWest is also the owner of our most-commented blog post as they sampled one of my favorite Bibio tracks in “Lovers Name”.

Out of the last 6 or 7 tracks they have released since May, there’s four which I am a big fan of. Get more of their music off their website.
GoldenWest – Live Forever
GoldenWest – Don’t Stop (Sun Drop)
GoldenWest – Fuck You, I’m From California
GoldenWest – Smoke Makes Love

After the jump, watch this compilation video of all the best (and worst) parts of California but mostly Los Angeles. (more…)

Hidden Gem: Weapons of Audio *retro-futuristic

June 15th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hidden Gem, Pop |

I discovered Weapons of Audio through a fellow blogger talking their shit up on facebook. I took a chance, downloaded one song from them, loved it and kept looking for more tracks to listen to.

Weapons of Audio, which is a great name for a band that rocks out, are an alternative pop group from Atlanta that remind me of Prince and for a more current comparison, Bad Rabbits. Here’s my three favorites from Weapons of Audio.

For more on Weapons of Audio follow them on facebook and twitter.

Chilly Gonzales – You Can Dance *my dirty interesting pleasure

February 10th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Electro, Electropop, Music Video, Pop |

Are you ready to DANCE!?! Seriously, this is one of my favorite songs I have heard in the last month or so and it’s a good song because it’s tough to define it. This can be retro-futuristic, electro-pop but whatever you want to define it as, you can’t deny wanting to shake your hips a little while listening to it.

It’s just a really interesting song, it is kind of mainstream with over 350,000 youtube views but if your looking to dance in a more chill atmosphere, like in your room or hanging with some friends, play this song and you better shake your hips too!

Above is the 3 minute music video version, but the 5 minute original version is so much better. Download

By the way, Chilly Gonzales is also a producer with his album and film, “Ivory Tower” being of the same name. Look him up and I think you will find he’s pretty interesting, much like the song above.

Theophilus London – Why Even Try *Pop/Funk dopeness

January 25th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, synthpop |

New Theophilus London off his upcoming A Lovers Holiday EP, dropping early February. “Why Even Try” sounds like Kanye West producing pop music in the 80’s and being influenced by some of the earliest hip-hop that had those funk instrumentals.

This song is retro-futuristic but more specifically can be called urban pop with the 80’s sounding synths, hip-pop from Theophilus and featuring Sara Quin from Canadian indie rock band Tegan & Sara on the vocals. Shit, if I confused you on some of what I just wrote, then listen and download the song already.

Not throwback thursday: Fitz & The Tantrums

December 23rd, 2010 by | Alternative/Indie, Pop, R&B |

Although their music sounds like some back in the day R&B and Funk/Soul stuff, Fitz & The Tantrums are a rising soulful pop band from Los Angeles.

They released debut EP in 2009 (purchase), got signed by Dangerbird Records in 2010 and released their debut album (purchase) in August ’10. Here’s a couple of my recent favorites from Fitz & The Tantrums.
