It was an incredible show mostly because of Walk The Moon, Saint Motel and the perfect weather at the magical outdoor intimate venue of The Greek, where almost a full moon led to an incredible night of catchy tunes.

Watch: Saint Motel – Benny Goodman

November 29th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video |

saint motel diner 600x397 Watch: Saint Motel Benny GoodmanOnce again, Saint Motel release a music video that tells a real interesting story. Here’s what AJ of Saint Motel had to say about the making of “Benny Goodman”:

For the video, I wanted to play off of the messages of the song.  I’m not sure if you are familiar with Benny Goodman’s success story, but it was at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles, in his darkest hour, when his band was nearly broke, that they finally hit and Benny became the King of Swing.  What could have been the end turned out to be just the beginning.  So in the spirit of believing in yourself when no one else will, somehow my mind wandered to the story of the Jackson Four becoming the Jackson Five.

Finding the perfect young dancer was a challenge.  In my mind I had envisioned someone almost impossibly talented and young that could pass as a young MJ.  After scouring the web and dance agencies for days, I stumbled upon a video of Baby Boogaloo and jumped out of my seat in excitement, I had everyone in the production office come over and take a look.  I knew he was the one right then and there.  Luckily, Miles (his real name) lived moderately close to Los Angeles and was into the idea, because I don’t think it could have worked without him.

Derrick Tuggle auditioned to play Mile’s father in the video before any of us had realized he was the viral sensation from the “Lonely Boy” video.

Saint Motel – Benny Goodman *alternative pop

Saint Motel Benny Goodman *alternative popSo Saint Motel‘s debut album, Voyuer, comes out July 10th. To hold us over, the alternative pop band released “Benny Goodman”, an interesting song that is a musical first for Saint Motel in some ways as it’s kind of a genre-bending homage to the man himself.

The 2nd Annual Hudson Block Party Featuring DWNTWN and Saint Motel

Dwntwn 600x600 The 2nd Annual Hudson Block Party Featuring DWNTWN and Saint Motel(Pictured above; DWNTWN at the 2nd Annual Hudson Block Party)

Last Sunday BeforeBigs.com was present at the 2nd Annual Hudson Block Party in West Hollywood. The Hudson is a bar which is a Los Angeles staple. It was already extremely popular. However, adding this block party to the mix made took the stop to a whole other level. It was really simple for them as all they did was rent the parking lot of the Bank of America next door and essentially blocked off part of the street to connect it with the Hudson.

There were two stages, food, beverages and all around fun. I was only there for a about four hours but saw two really good acts that I have been following for a while. They were DWNTWN and Saint Motel, both Los Angeles based and very up-and-coming. They are exactly what electro-pop and alternative rock should be. They bring tons of energy and both have a very original sound, unique in their own ways.

As a whole this event was a huge success and is only going to get bigger as each year goes by. For it being only the second year in existence, roughly around 1,000 people showed up which is REALLY good. I can only image what the crowd will be like next year. Take a listen to my favorite song by DWNTWN and Saint Motel performed at this event.

Saint Motel – 1997 *lounge pop

361 600x395 Saint Motel 1997 *lounge popSaint Motel is pleased to announce the release of their debut full-length, Voyeur, due out July 10. In celebration of the release, the band is dropping their latest single, “1997,” for free download. The shimmering track showcases the band’s unique perspective. It’s a playfully-sadistic anecdote about a group of friends sensing the world will end in 1997. The track is an enjoyable composite of sounds, blending together tuneful keyboard strokes and the twang of the guitar with the horn-section and singer A/J Jackson’s soft vocal delivery.

Listen and download “1997″ below.

The band will embark on a national headlining tour kicking off on July 12th at San Francisco’s Pop Scene. Additionally, they will be hosting a hometown record release show in Los Angeles at the El Rey Theatre on Saturday, July 14th. Below I’ve listed the rest of their tour dates. (more…)

Saint Motel – Honest Feedback

March 7th, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie |

sm0155 600x600 Saint Motel Honest FeedbackGot a new song from Los Angeles alternative band Saint Motel. The song, “Honest Feedback”, has an interesting story behind it that I will let the band explain:

The song itself was something we had been kicking back and forth for a while. Kind of has retro sock-hop-pop vibes that we really love and it’s fun to get loose to this song on stage.

The lyrical idea kind of happened by accident. In the writing phase, I was just singing gibberish lyrics to get the melody down. But I kept on saying something that sounded like “honest feedback”. When it was time to actually sit down and write the lyrics I was thinking, ‘I should probably change the lyric because no one likes to hear honest feedback,’ but then I thought, ‘that is actually pretty fucking cool.’ So we decided to just dive into a pretty taboo subject. Probably not the kind of subject matter you’ll be hearing in shampoo commercials but at least it’s keeping us entertained haha

Stream and download (for a limited time only) “Honest Feedback”.

Video: Saint Motel – At Least I Have Nothing

February 2nd, 2012 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video |

Video: Saint Motel At Least I Have Nothing“The video is a combination of 16mm, Super 8, Flip-Cam, Video, Cell Phone, and Still Photography that we’ve accumulated throughout the years. With “At Least I Have Nothing” we saw an opportunity to do a more introspective video. Rather than a big production with high concepts we wanted to do something small that was a mixture of sadness, optimism, and intense nostalgia.  We purposely left out performance and typical “band” type footage to hopefully present a different side of Saint Motel.  Since that is most of what we had footage-wise what we ended up with was a lot of weird and rated R content.” – Saint Motel

Saint Motel – At Least I Have Nothing x Puzzle Pieces (video)

November 28th, 2011 by | Alternative/Indie, Music Video, Rock |

Saint Motel 600x549 Saint Motel At Least I Have Nothing x Puzzle Pieces (video)Here’s what Saint Motel told us regarding their latest song, “At Least I Have Nothing”.

I wanted to send you over the new Saint Motel song, “At Least I Have Nothing”.  It’s kind of a contrast to our last song “Puzzle Pieces” and will be the other song on our upcoming 7″, which is available now for pre-order at http://giftshop.saintmotel.com/product/7-1-saint-motel-vinyl.

Like every Saint Motel song, the meaning is open to (and encouraged for) interpretation. In some ways, “At Least I Have Nothing” is a fucked up look at the bright side of utter despair.  When you have nothing, maybe that nothingness is actually something…freedom.
